Alcohol exposure is a highly preventable cancer risk factor. European Code Against Cancer recommends to reduce alcohol intake of any type in order to decrease cancer risk. Poles have drunk more and more alcohol, reaching the average level of consumption at 9.55 liters of pure alcohol per capita in 2018. This phenomenon shows that alcohol consumption is constantly a great public health challenge in Poland. Material and methods. Material in our study was an epidemiological data on cancer incidence in Poland sourced from the National Cancer Registry in Poland. Data on alcohol consumption comes from the State Agency for Prevention of Alcohol Related Problems survey conducted in Poland in 2002. Relative risks (RR) for alcohol consumption and cancer were sourced from the published studies. The alcohol attributable fraction (AAF) has been calculated with use of the formula provided in this work. Results. Results of our study show that in Poland in 2016, about 4.6% (7252) of all cancer cases were related to the alcohol consumption: women – 3.4% (2599), men – 5.8% (4653). Conclusions. In the face of epidemiological prognosis on increasing number of new cancer cases in Poland, there is a need to implement an immediate public health actions on reducing strong cancer risk factors such as alcohol consumption.","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"1137 1","pages":"179-181"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86475050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The symptoms that patients report are similar to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The authors present the case of a patient referred to hospital due to nasal obstruction on the left side. The performed endoscopic surgery revealed within the left middle nasal concha a tumour penetrating into the anterior ethmoid and frontal recess. ONB was diagnosed in the histopathological examination. The patient was qualified for complementary radiotherapy. The patient has been under medical supervision for 24 months. There have been no signs of recurrence. It was decided to present the above case due to the lack of deviations in the ENT endoscopy and minor ailments reported by the patient, which in combination with advanced age could lead to discontinuation of surgical treatment.","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"129 1","pages":"184-186"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73763906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of our study was to analyze the number and structure of patients diagnosed and treated due to cancers of lips, mouth and throat in Poland between 2008 and 2015. Material and methods. Secondary statistical analysis of data obtained from the Polish National Cancer Registry (KRN) and Polish National Health Fund (NFZ), concerning patients diagnosed for the first time between 2008 and 2015. Results. Based on the available data, in total there were 30 800 new cases of cancers in population of Poland, and 29 800 people starting their treatment financed from the National Health Fund. Discussion. Cancers of the discussed locations, considered individually, are often rare diseases, with the incidence counted in hundreds of people per year in the entire Polish population. Due to the etiology and course, however, they should be analyzed together, which means that they become a significant group. Conclusions. In recent years, the annual incidence of these tumours was about 4000 cases, 70% of them were men. There is an approximately 10% difference in the number of registered cases of these cancers in NFZ databases. The creation of a medical register, including administrative, epidemiological and clinical data, would significantly improve the observation of the population of patients with these tumours.","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"33 1","pages":"157-162"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74484536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lymph node involvement is a negative prognostic factor for patients undergoing curative gastrectomy and indication for preoperative chemotherapy, thus a sufficient assessment strategy is required. We aimed to establish the value of preoperatively collected data in prediction of lymph node metastasis. Material and methods. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 150 gastric cancer patients hospitalized in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Medical University of Łodź in 2011–2017. We gathered information comprising clinicopathological features, inflammatory markers: neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and Tumor Index (TI). Results. Independent factors associated with lymph node involvement were: NLR (OR = 1.35; p = 0.01), Tumor Index (OR = 1.07; p < 0.001). ROC curve plots assessed the diagnostic value of TI and NLR. Conclusions. Tumor Index and NLR are factors indicating lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer patients. NLR is a potentially useful tool for neoadjuvant chemotherapy qualification.","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"21 1","pages":"7-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73085643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Poland, Tadeusz Koszarowski was a pioneer in this field, who already in 1947 had published in the Polski Tygodnik Lekarski journal on ‘Diagnosis and treatment of women’s breast cancer’, whilst in 1950 he published ‘Progress in breast cancer surgery and patient outcomes in those treated at the Warsaw Radium Institute’ in the Nowotwory journal. At that time Leon Manteuffel and Witold Rudowski had also published papers on breast cancer. In 1953, Tadeusz Koszarowski created a surgical oncology ward, (and later a clinic), which at the time was the first centre in Poland that established national standard procedures in this field. Within the last 50 years, 114 papers were published on breast cancer, whose authors had performed surgery and undertaken other clinical work at the Centre of Oncology in Warsaw at 15 Wawelska Street. This work is listed in the Surgical Oncology Clinic Staff bibliography during 1947–1988 as prepared by Edward Towpik and published by the Oncology Institute (Fig. 1). The publication list and its order aptly illustrates the study of breast cancer in women. At the start, outcomes were evaluated following the Halsted operation, the role of axillary and parasternal lymph nodes and hormonal therapy consisting of removing the oestrogen source by means of ovariectomy and adrenalectomy. Later in the 1960s, there were developments made in chemotherapy involving introduction of CMF and other drugs, breast-conserving treatment, rehabilitation, methods of breast reconstruction, genetic and molecular research; all leading to treatment being individualised. There is however no internet record of some 35 papers that I been co-author, which adequately traces the history of such developments in Poland. In 1994, the Breast Cancer Clinic at the Ursynow campus was launched under the directorship of Tadeusz Pieńkow ski. This was the first organ-specific clinic of its kind in Poland where women with breast cancer were investigated, overtaking the currently then preferred ‘Breast Units’ option. The clinic possesses a plethora of clinical and scientific data as detailed in many publications which are currently now made available throughout the world.","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"1 1","pages":"385-387"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76126414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Survival rates are a tool that allows evaluation of healthcare quality and cancer treatment efficiency. The main aim of this article is to present tendencies in curability of Polish patients diagnosed between 1999–2010 and followed up until the end of 2015. Materials and methods. Survival analysis was performed using data from the Polish National Cancer Registry and Statistics Poland. The survival rates were calculated using Hakulinen method. Results. In Poland, five-year survival rates in men for all cancers increased from 32.9% (diagnosis 1999–2001) to 41.3% (diagnosis 2008–2010), whereas in women, from 50.9% to 56.1% respectively. The biggest improvement was found in therapy of prostate cancer (by 15.5 percentage points), hematological malignancies (7–13 p.p.), malignancies of bone and cartilage (10–14 p.p.), thyroid gland cancers (5–9 p.p.) and kidney cancer (7–9 p.p.). Discussion. Although survival rates are lower than in other European countries, survival of oncology patients in Poland has improved. Conclusions. 1.  In Poland, survival of patients with majority of cancer types has improved. 2.  The greatest increase in survival rates was observed for rare malignancies. 3.  The improvement occurred during the time when the National Cancer Control Program was implemented.","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"27 2-4 1","pages":"349-358"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86480352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the core elements of the diagnosis is experiencing a traumatic event or being a witness of a close person experiencing it. For instance, cancer might be the stressor that affects not only patients, but also their relatives and caregivers. Cancer-related PTSD may occur at any stage of life (childhood and adolescence, adulthood, old age) and manifests itself in different ways. The first purpose of this paper is to describe each age group, thus showing PTSD from the perspective of children and teenagers, adults, and seniors. The second aim is to present the symptoms in the parents, siblings, and children of cancer patients. The third task is to describe risk factors that affect the occurrence of PTSD. Additionally, there are suggestions regarding issues which deserve future consideration.","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"21 1","pages":"359-364"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87809862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The continuously improving cancer detection at an early stage and improving survival rates have been observed and, therefore, patients are predisposed to detection of multiple primaries. It has been reported that the incidence of multiple primaries in breast cancer patients ranges from of 4% to 17%. Materials and methods. A group of 112 breast cancer patients with synchronous malignancies was presented. They constituted 0.09% of patients (118,952 cases) who were treated for breast cancer at the same time period, and made up 3.5% of all patients (3,176 cases) with multiple primary cancers, and 21.7% of all patients (517 cases) with breast cancer who developed multiple primaries. Results. The most frequent type of synchronous primary malignancy was breast cancer (63.4%) and 90.1% of them were diagnosed at the same time or within one month following the first breast cancer diagnosis. Among cases of non-breast synchronous primaries, female genital organ malignancies were predominant (36.6%). Synchronous breast cancer was diagnosed significantly earlier than non-breast cancers (mean time was 0.4 and 1 month, respectively, p = 0.0123). Better results in the group with synchronous contralateral breast cancer in comparison to synchronous breast and non-breast cancer were observed (5-year overall survival rates were 90.9% and 66.3%, respectively, and 5-year disease-free survival rate — 62.5% and 51.3%, respectively).","PeriodicalId":39938,"journal":{"name":"Nowotwory","volume":"19 1","pages":"336-341"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-05-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86885793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
