Clinicians are unable to use this information effectively because of the lack of interoperability and standardization between systems as well as the overwhelming amount of irrelevant information. In this study, we propose a framework to support clinicians decision making by integrating data from different EHR systems in a common data warehouse and applying data mining techniques to retrieve useful knowledge from patients data. This knowledge is then integrated with clinical guidelines in clinical decision support systems to facilitate decision making. Our framework will enhance the use of patients data in decision making and to encourage the use of clinical guidelines and evidence based medicine.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130596083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present the results from a qualitative study where we have evaluated mobile video communication between the patient's home and the hospital unit. Our results show that mobile video enhances communication between home care teams and medical staff at the unit, makes more effective use of practitioners' time and that the equipment have additional values for staff that extend beyond video communication. Challenges identified are related to technical problems, limitations in the MVCT's design and the concern that the inability to handle problems may affect health care professionals' role as an authority. The benefits of the MVCT rely to a great extent on individual users' creativity and the willingness of key actors in the organization's management to find ways of improving the present home care format.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131565345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The variety of available techniques is nowadays applied interchangeably with success on almost every healthcare domain, but mostly for diagnosis. Indeed, the results achieved on prognosis through the same techniques are much more modest. In this paper, we argue that the difference of success on diagnosis and prognosis, by mining techniques, is mainly due to the inadequacy of those techniques for dealing with the inherent temporal information attached to clinical data. Moreover, we discuss a new approach to address this issue, independent of the domain, and present some preliminary results on two different datasets.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121395776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Non Invasive Break-Up Time (NIBUT) is a clinical test used for the diagnosis of DES. In this work, we propose a methodology for the semi-automatic computation of the NIBUT test. We tested our methodology on a dataset composed of 15 videos manually annotated and high success rates were obtained. The promising results of this approach mean a step forward on the development of computer aided tools for DES assessment.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114286844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study presents the proposed context management architecture, which is then verified with the Siafu simulator in an ALL scenario where the user's health is monitored with information about blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature. Considering some parameters, the proposed QoC assessment shall allow verifying the extent to which the context information is up-to-date, valid, accurate, complete and significant. The implementation of this proposal can mean a big social impact and a technological innovation applied to AAL, at the disposal and support of a significant number of individuals such as elderly or sick people, and with a more precise technology.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126964570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We use linear structuring elements, such as line seed filters, as kernels to convolve with edge images, and extract a set of lines from the posterior rib-cage. After convolving kernels in all possible orientations in the range [0, π], we measure the angle for which the line histogram has maximum magnitude. This measure provides a good approximation of the global chest rib-orientation for each lung. A chest radiograph is said to be upright if the difference between the orientation angles of both lungs with respect to the horizontal axis, is negligible. We validate our method on sets of normal and abnormal images and argue that rib orientation can be used for rotation detection in chest radiographs as aid in quality control during image acquisition, and to discard images from training and testing data sets. In our test, we achieve a maximum accuracy of 90%.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124144930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a new application for this data: a method to classify which body segment a transverse cross section image belongs to. The labeling of the data is created with the guidance of an online body cross section tutorial. The visual properties of the images are represented using a variety of feature descriptors. To avoid problems that arise from the large dimensionality of features, feature selection is applied. The multi-class SVM is employed as the classifier. Both the CT scans and the color photographs of cryosections of the whole body (male and female) are used to test the proposed method. The high performance with overall accuracy above 98% on both the 2160 CT dataset and the 1870 cryosectional photos show the method is very promising. Because of its observed effectiveness on visible human data, we will extend our approach to classify figures in biomedical articles.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122194061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, since a heterogeneous set of features will be needed (domains, structures, ontology terms, etc), several quite different databases should be consulted. The handling of different databases can become difficult, as each database could provide a different nomenclature for the same proteins. Anyway, these databases usually provides some mapping tools in order to determine the correspondence among the different nomenclatures used for the same protein. The main goal of this paper is to provide a biological database including a huge amount of protein information in order to be used for different purposes in bioinformatics. This database will be designed as a flexible and extensible tool and it could be extended and updated when new proteins are annotated or the included ones are modified.","PeriodicalId":398710,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128402382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Heart rate variability signals were derived from the original ECG signals using R-R wave intervals.
