Since radio communication is the dominant energy consuming activity, most presented approaches focused on reducing the number of data transmitted to the central workstation. This can be achieved by deploying both on the workstation and the sensor node a synchronized prediction model capable of forecasting future values. Thus, enabling the sensor node to transmit only the values that surpasses a predefined error threshold. This mechanism offers a decrease in the cost of transmission energy for a price of an increase in the cost of computational energy. Therefore, finding the right tradeoff between complexity and efficiency is very important to achieve optimal results. In this paper, we present a novel data reduction method that outperforms other state of the art data reduction approaches. We demonstrated the efficiency of our algorithm using simulation on real-world data sets collected at our laboratory. The obtained results show that our method was able to achieve a data suppression ratio ranging between 93.2% and 99.8%.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121251348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semantic technologies, as a means of integration and coordination of heterogeneous systems, may help big data to manage terminology and relationships to link various data from different data sources. However, and due to the difficulty of integration and analytics of some datasets with high-precision, automated processes cannot reach a high level of accuracy without the human cognitive ability. Crowdsourcing platforms have the potential to integrate (entity matching, entity resolution) and analyze (sentiment analysis, image recognition) heterogeneous data sources when in some cases these integration tasks may prove to be problematic for computers. In this survey, we explore and compare empirical research studies that rely on merging semantic and crowdsourcing technologies. And, in the light of this comparison, we propose a high-level integration workflow, which shows how merging these technologies can enhance the big data integration process and tackle the data analysis challenges.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"2 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126184272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, cross entropy (CE) based algorithm is proposed as an efficient technique for optimizing the weighting coefficients vector of an SDF-based cooperative spectrum sensing scheme. The proposed CE based algorithm is compared with existing deterministic methods as well as with an evolutionary-based genetic algorithm (GA) method. DSM aims at balancing the demand for power with intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar units. DSM deploys various mechanisms to influence customer's capability and willingness to modify their power consumption according to the utility's energy production and the distribution capacity. DSM aims at either saving energy in sustainable manner (i.e. energy response) or/and shifting the time of energy use to off-peak hours (i.e. demand response). Indeed, DSM does not necessarily reduce the total customer's power consumption but reshapes consumption patterns. Hence, DSM is expected to reduce the need for investments in networks and power plants in order to meet peak demands. In this paper, we propose an advanced demand response (DR) solution for individual households. Considering a household equipped with various domestic loads, we aim at optimally scheduling the day-ahead power consumption under timevariable rates while taking advantage of modular and deferrable loads, e.g. electric vehicle. Our proposal is numerically illustrated through real-life scenarios, elaborated using an existing simulator of human behavior regarding power consumption.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134436656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This ingenious distributed peer-to-peer design attracted several businesses and solicited several communities beyond the financial market. There are also multiple use cases built around its ecosystem. However, this backbone introduced a lot of speculation and has been criticized by several researchers. Moreover, the lack of legislations perceived a lot of attention. In this paper, we are concerned in analyzing blockchain networks and their development, focusing on their security challenges. We took a holistic approach to cover the involved mechanisms and the limitations of Bitcoin, Ethereum and Hyperledger networks. We expose also numerous possible attacks and assess some countermeasures to dissuade vulnerabilities on the network. For occasion, we simulated the majority and the re-entrancy attacks. We analyze and compare the all-active and selective relaying schemes for 2-relay and 3-relay systems where these schemes can be implemented in the absence and presence of channel state information (CSI), respectively. The analysis is carried out in the case of fully connected systems where each relay is connected to all other relays. We compare the performance of both schemes using an exact outage probability analysis for gamma-gamma FSO fading channels and Rician/Rayleigh RF fading channels. We then apply the cut-set method to derive an upper-bound on the asymptotic performance for the sake of quantifying the achievable diversity orders and coding gains.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129875759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The amount of data clearly grows at an unexpected rate. The high-density deployment of the sensor nodes will lead to high data redundancy in the collected readings of the sensor nodes. An energy-saving data aggregation may be an essential way to remove the data redundancy. In this article, we propose a Distributed Data Aggregation based Modified K-means (DiDAMoK) Technique for enhancement the lifetime of the PWSNs. DiDAMoK is distributed inside each sensor node. It works into periods. Each period is composed of three stages. First, the sensor readings are collected and saved in the sensor node. Second, the modified K-means is employed on these readings to convert them into clusters of readings. The number of clusters is dynamic and depends on the nature of collected readings. In the third stage, One representative reading of each cluster will be transmitted to the sink. The performance of the DiDAMoK technique is evaluated using OMNeT++ network simulator and based on real sensed data of a WSN. Simulation results explain that our DiDAMoK technique can efficiently decrease the consumed energy of the whole PWSN due to reducing the sensed readings number transmitted to the sink node while keeping a suitable data accuracy at the sink.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125907807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been considered as one of the big data domains. Therefore, current research has been focused on data compression and data clustering as efficient techniques to reduce big data collection in WSNs thus enhancing their lifetime. This paper proposes a two-level data reduction approach for periodic sensor-based big data framework. The sensors constitute the first level and they use a data compression model based on the Pearson coefficient in order to reduce the amount of data collected periodically in each sensor. The second level is applied at intermediate nodes, called aggregators. The aggregator has an objective to eliminate data redundancy collected by neighboring nodes using an adapted version of Kmeans clustering method. Simulation on real data sensors shows the effectiveness of our technique in reducing the big data collected in WSNs and enhancing network lifetime, compared to other existing techniques.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127138198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
