One of the main challenges that a Wireless Body Sensor Network faces is the transmission of the collected vital signs measurements. Data transmission is considered to be the greatest consumer of energy in a sensor node. Multiple data compression techniques have been proposed in the literature to reduce the size of the collected data. Thus, the transmission energy consumption. In this paper, we compare the performance of three resource-aware data compression techniques that are proposed in the literature and showed good results: Lightweight Temporal Compression, Differential Pulse Code Modulation and Discrete Wavelet Transform lifting scheme. Then, we propose to adapt the lossy Lightweight Temporal Compression algorithm and combine it with the lossless Differential Pulse Code Modulation algorithm in order to achieve a higher level of compression and reduce the data reconstruction error rate. To evaluate our approach, multiple series of simulation has been done on vital signs data. The results showed that our proposed compression scheme achieved a reduction by up to 95%, and reduced the transmission energy consumption by up to 5 times.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134382085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diabetes is a long-life disease that leads to many complications such as kidney failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart diseases, blindness, stroke, and even death. Diabetic patients need to manage their disease to stay healthy by eating healthier, taking medicine as directed, taking care of their body, reducing stress, being active, and checking the blood sugar daily by using on body and/or home monitoring devices. Thus, to avoid diabetes complications, diabetic patients need to be early diagnosed, monitored, and assisted. This can be achieved by building a general, user friendly, smart, and reliable system. This paper presents a general semantic system relying on a modular ontology annotating the daily activities, food, symptoms, and diabetes patients in order to monitor the parameters related to diabetes patients and assist him/her to avoid medical crisis. This modular ontology is conceived using OWL language and inference engine (Pellet reasoner) in order to fill the gap between diabetic patients, medical staff, and daily life activities systems. One of the popular ways to make rating predictions is by using neighborhood-based models which rely on calculating the similarities between users, and use the concept that similar users will tend to rate the same items similarly. Different similarity measures were proposed in previous studies. In this paper, we present a clear study of the most used similarities (PCS, CVS, MSD, SRC, FPC, WPC and DSim) by implementing them on the same dataset, and taking into consideration different samples from this dataset. Then we evaluate these similarities using the same metrics, in order to have a better comparison and to choose the similarity measure that shows the best accuracy of prediction.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114741244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We also derive asymptotic expressions for the SER of M-PAM and M-QAM to study the behavior of SER at high values of signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, we derive an exact closed-form expression for the average capacity. We focus on the case of a downlink single-cell scenario with linear precoding as zero forcing (ZF) and conjugate beamforming (CB). This performance evaluation is done over a statistical mmWave 5G propagation channel, using NYUSIM channel simulator developed by New York University. A study of the channel response characteristics is provided to define the system parameters. Simulation results in single-user scenario show better performance with an increasing number of base station antennas due to the increase of system diversity. For multi-user scenario, the performance degrades for a higher number of cell users due to inter-user interference.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125239049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the need to monitor the activity of many individuals to assess the group status and take action accordingly has created a new research domain called Collaborative Body Sensor Network (CBSN). In such a new field, understanding CBSN's concept and challenges over the roots requires investigation to allow the development of suitable algorithms and protocols. Although there are many research studies in BSN, CBSN is still in its early phases and studies around it are very few. In this paper, we define and taxonomize CBSN, describe its architecture, and discuss its applications. The differences between CBSN and other sensor networks are highlighted to justify the need to develop new protocols and schemes appropriate for this type of networks. The major challenges are discussed, and open research issues are outlined to help in identifying new research directions in CBSN. To the best of our knowledge, this article is the first to define CBSN as a standalone domain that is distinct from other sensor networks and to develop its taxonomy.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115326378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on strictly increasing functions. It is a kind of homomorphic encryption where the homomorphic operation is order comparison. This means that comparing encrypted data provides the exact result than comparing the original data. It is attractive to be used in databases, especially in cloud ones as a method to enhance security, since it allows applications to perform order queries over encrypted data efficiently (without the need of decrypting the data). Wireless sensor network is another potential domain in which order preserving encryption can be adopted and used with high impact. It can be integrated with secure data aggregation protocols that use comparison operations to aggregate data (MAX, MIN, etc.) in a way that no decryption is being performed on the sensor nodes, which means directly less power consumption. In this paper, we will review many existing order-preserving encryption schemes with their related brief explanation, efficiency level, and security. Then, and based on the comparative table generated, we will propose a novel order-preserving encryption scheme that has a good efficiency level and less complexity, in order to be used in a wireless sensor network with an enhanced level of security.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122740293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are used in different application domains including data collection with convergecast scenarios. In convergecast, all collected data are destined to one common node usually called the sink. In case of high traffic load, this many- to-one data collection scenario causes queue overflow mainly in nodes located near the sink. Sensor nodes are known for their limited storage capacities which makes the packet queue overflow even more critical. This issue is often avoided by the routing protocol. In this paper we propose a link quality and delay based Composite Load Balancing routing protocol (ComLoB) that fairly distributes traffic load to avoid congestion. It also integrates active queues monitoring to prevent dropping packets due to queues overflow. Simulation results on Contiki OS Cooja simulator showed that ComLoB achieves a better packet delivery ratio and much less queue overflow compared to standard routing protocols such as RPL and HopCount. We also validate our proposal through experimentation on TelosB motes.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122524767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such networks where nodes might hold critical information about people's lives, designing efficient routing schemes is very important to guarantee data delivery with the lowest delay and energy consumption. Even though some cluster-based routing schemes were proposed in the literature, none of them offer a complete solution that guarantees energy and delay efficient routing in BSN. In this paper, we propose a robust cluster- based algorithm that increases the routing efficiency through every step of the routing process: cluster formation, cluster head election, and routing operation of data to the sink. The proposed algorithm is compared to existing cluster-based schemes, and MATLAB simulations are performed to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm with respect to delay and energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":398620,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Middle East and North Africa Communications Conference (MENACOMM)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128693970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
