In the ubiquitous computing environment, learners can get the right learning contents to achieve self-learning at the right place and the right time through non-contact RFID identification. The learning system is composed of three layers, the portable learning object, the mobile device, and the system modules for learning management and manipulation. A total of twenty-eight students recruited from fifth grade elementary school are participating in the quasi-experimental study. After three weeks of investigated subject learning, the results showed that the average scores of attitude for the experimental group are higher than the control one. About 700 undergraduate students in Tokyo area participated into the survey research and the researcher-developed questionnaire was utilized to collect the data. The results of descriptive analyses are reported focusing on distribution rate of mobile phones, daily usage of mobile phones, preferable mobile phone services to investigate possibilities of mobile phone use for learning. Comparisons of the results with that of last year show the tremendous increase of students' subscription of the flat rate for the unlimited use service of networking packets. In context-aware ubiquitous learning environments, it is desirable that learning content is retrieved according to environmental contexts, such as learners' location. However, traditional information retrieval schemes are not designed for content retrieval in ubiquitous learning environments. Recently, folksonomies have emerged as a successful kind of applications for categorizing web resources in a collaborative manner. This paper focuses on the index creation problem for location-aware learning content retrieval. First, we propose a bottom-up approach to constructing the index according to the similarity between tags, which considers metadata and structural information of the teaching materials annotated by the tags. Then, a maintenance mechanism is designed to efficiently update the index. The index creation method has been implemented, and a synthetic learning object repository has been built to evaluate the proposed approach. Experimental results show that this method can increase precision of retrieval. In a university course teaching ethnography and design students were out in the field making observations and collecting data. We gave them access to a wiki, which they used to upload field notes and material as a support for collaboration. In this paper we present three tools we built and deployed to aid the students when in field and when collaborating. The first is a mobile tool used to gather data: a program running on the students' mobile phones let them take photos, record video and audio, and write simple text notes, which are automatically uploaded to the wiki. The second is an awareness tool that enables the students to quickly see what the others have done in the wiki. The third is a novel browser for the uploaded data, which relates objects by both time and location. Moreover, a series of learning activities of a butterfly ecology unit of the natural science course for K-4th students has been developed and conducted in the learning environment, in which students are guided to observe real-world objects with personalized supports from the system. In this paper, a series of mobile device-based English communicating activities are designed, and corresponding practical research is conducted. By testing, questionnaire and interviews, we review the feasibility of the model and the effectiveness of mobile learning. Research has shown that this new learning model has positive effects in promoting primary school students' interest towards English learning, as well as their mastery of knowledge and their development of abilities.
