Stanek","doi":"10.2478/V10083-011-0011-8","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2478/V10083-011-0011-8","url":null,"abstract":"Four experiments were conducted to determine the effect of replacing soybean meal with pea (two cultivars), faba bean or yellow lupine seeds in pig diets supplemented or not supplemented with feed enzymes on nitrogen balance and nutrient digestibility. The experimental materials comprised 72 hybrid (Polish Large White × Polish Landrace) growing-finishing pigs. Balance and digestibility tests were carried out twice (at the first and second stages of fattening), by the simple balance method. At the first stage of fattening, soybean meal was partially replaced with pea (40% or 46%), faba bean (33%) or yellow lupine (18%) seeds. At the second stage of fattening, soybean meal was completely replaced with legume seeds. Nutrient digestibility from PT-1 diets containing pea seeds of both cultivars was comparable with that noted for standard diets, or even higher. A 33% faba bean content of experimental diets was too high, and it decreased the digestibility of all nutrients. Enzyme supplementation reduced the adverse effect of faba bean, yet nutrient digestibility did not reach the level reported for the control group. A significant increase in nutrient digestibility was noted in pigs fed diets containing yellow lupine seeds, and the beneficial influence of lupine was enhanced by enzyme supplementation. At the second stage of fattening, nutrient digestibility increased when yellow lupine seeds were used as a substitute for soybean meal. The complete replacement of soybean meal with pea and faba seeds in enzyme-supplemented diets also positively affected nutrient digestibility. Soybean meal substitutes had no negative impact on nitrogen balance at both stages of fattening. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of progesterone in chickens of the Polbar breed. The concentration is determined in blood serum collected from each of 50 hens at 8, 12, and 18 weeks of age. Determining the concentration of progesterone was made by the Enzymo-immunoassay method using the MEIA microparticle analyzer AxSYMTM Abbott. Hens subjected to the experiment did not yet reach puberty. Progesterone levels in chickens increased with the age of the birds. Variability occurring in chickens of the Polbar breed was influenced by the considerable range of concentrations tested through the hormone in blood serum. We find a variety of factors having great impact on the concentration of progesterone in blood plasma, including the same genes that affect the physiology of the body. The relationship between the major chemical constituents and somatic cell count (SCC) in sows colostrum and milk and the rearing results of piglets was analyzed. The studies involved 20 crossbred Polish Large White (PLW)  Polish Landrace (PL) sows in the second and third reproduction cycles. The chosen reproductive performance traits were plotted against the level of each chemical composition component and the SCC of colostrum (1 lactation day) and milk (7 lactation day). The chemical composition of sows colostrum and milk as well as the SCC estimates proved to be significantly modified by the lactation stage and season. The effectiveness of five disinfecting preparations widely used in clinical practice against Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from inflammatory secretion of the cow mammary gland was estimated. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the disinfecting agents in terms of their cidal activity, used at the concentration recommended (100%, 50%, 10%) by the manufacturer. The determinations were performed by the cylinder method. After the 18h-incubation time, it was found that all the disinfectants tested without dilution showed the strongest bactericidal potential against S. aureus strains. In the years 2005–2009, equestrians competed 627 times on 225 purebred Arabian horses in various competitive categories. The horses came from 10 sire lines and 17 dam lines. The most frequently competing horses were from the sire lines Kuhailan Afas, Ibrahim and Saklawi I and from the dam lines Gazella and Mlecha. The greatest number of winning horses came from the sire lines Kuhailan Afas, Saklawi I and Ibrahim and from the dam lines Gazella, Mlecha and Sahara. Highly significant differences were noted between the average speeds obtained by Arabian horses during rides of different distances in competition. Distances were divided into those up to 80 km for young horses, with speed limits, and those over 80 km.
