Glare reflection, electromagnetic waves, and wildlife hazards are examples of the expected risks that may take place and potentially affect the safety of the air transportation system. On the other hand, airports have wide areas that could be used to install a solar PV project. In this paper, the possibility of using solar PV systems at Egyptian airports is presented and discussed, taking into account the security requirements as mandatory conditions for the airport environments. The expected problems and their possible solutions are discussed. Examples of international airports using solar PV systems are illustrated. Additionally, a pre-feasibility study for using a PV system at an Egyptian airport (Hurghada International Airport) is proposed. The results indicate that the Egyptian airports can play an effective role in producing renewable energy through the use of solar PV systems. Besides, economic and environmental benefits can be achieved under certain conditions.","PeriodicalId":397427,"journal":{"name":"2016 Eighteenth International Middle East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126878138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The grid can be disconnected from the utility during large events (i.e., faults, voltage collapses, etc.). As a result, these events may affect the stable operation of Microgrid. This paper presents a control strategy to mitigate the frequency and voltage fluctuations during the islanding transition of Microgrids. The strategy depends on managing the energy stored of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). The studied Microgrid is a 33-bus system supplied by utility at normal operation. During the islanding transition, the Microgrid is supplied by two diesel synchronous generators. Wind energy conversion system of squirrel cage induction generator type is connected to the Microgrid with high penetration level of 30% at constant wind speed. SMES unit consists of superconducting coil, cryogenic refrigerator, step down transformer, power conditioning system, cryostat/vacuum vessel, and DC-DC chopper. The procedure of control is based on fuzzy logic controller. The results obtained show the effectiveness of the control strategy of SMES energy in seamless switching between grid-connected mode and islanding mode and mitigating the frequency and voltage fluctuations under switching states.","PeriodicalId":397427,"journal":{"name":"2016 Eighteenth International Middle East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121425553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, an analytic study of harmonic performance of six different modulation techniques for Z-Source inverters is presented. The harmonic spectrum of each modulation technique is estimated using double Fourier series approach. The analytical approach is adopted to exclude the common errors caused by practical conditions from simulation or experimental setups, and to present a fair comparison between the different modulation techniques. A collective evaluation of the modulation techniques using weighted total harmonic distortion is presented; taking into account the impact of the applied voltage gain on the harmonic performance.","PeriodicalId":397427,"journal":{"name":"2016 Eighteenth International Middle East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126260531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the literature, the nine-switch inverter topology is proposed as a suitable reduced switch-count converter topology for six-phase drives, where each pair of phases share the same converter leg. First, a brief summary about this topology along with its limitations are introduced. The six-phase drive system topology is then investigated under both inverter and machine open-circuit faults. Conventional rotor field oriented controller is employed as a controller platform for such a drive. Optimal current control is used under open phase conditions to ensure a certain optimization criterion, namely, minimum stator copper loss or maximum torque production. The system is investigated through a simulation study using MATLAB/SIMULINK.","PeriodicalId":397427,"journal":{"name":"2016 Eighteenth International Middle East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128081463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much research work has been done to investigate the feasibility of different series/parallel-motor connections in an appropriate manner while being supplied by a single Voltage Source Inverter (VSI). In this paper, a new Fifteen-Switch Inverter (15-SI) topology for supplying two independent five-phase motors is proposed. This topology can be considered as an extension to the well-known nine-switch converter topology, which can be used to independently control two three-phase motor drives. First, the proposed inverter topology and its mathematical model are presented. Then, three carrier-based Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) schemes to control the converter and their operational constraints are investigated under Common Frequency (CF) and Variable Frequency (VF) modes of operation. The proposed system is validated by simulating the proposed 15-SI feeding two identical five-phase induction motors using Matlab/Simulink.","PeriodicalId":397427,"journal":{"name":"2016 Eighteenth International Middle East Power Systems Conference (MEPCON)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115846767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal is to maximize the wind power capture at variable wind speed which can be achieved by adjusting the turbine speed in such a way that the optimal tip speed ratio λopt is maintained. For higher than rated wind speeds but below the cut-out limit, the captured power is kept constant by the pitch mechanism to protect the turbine from damage while the system generates and delivers the rated power to the grid.
