The ability of current radar systems to suppress sidelobe clutter and interference is seriously limited by miscalibration of antenna array gain and phase due to non-ideal antenna and near-field scattering characteristics, both at the receive and transmit phased-arrays. At best, current calibration methods perform only receive array calibration using a limited number of discrete sources. The objective of this paper is to perform joint transmit and receive array calibration using ground backscatter returns from MIMO radar illumination.","PeriodicalId":396946,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarCon13)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128294280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improved radar target classification has been demonstrated previously by using at least one additional perspective in a generic environment but the impact of sensor placement has been less studied. In this paper, we examine the use of multiple high range resolution (HRR) profiles to demonstrate how selection of sensor locations can improve classification rates. Specifically, performance improvements are demonstrated after identifying the optimal set of perspectives and employing a simple decision fusion network (DFN) algorithm for defined signal-to-noise (SNR) levels. We show percentages of correct classification (PCC) can be maintained in scenarios where SNR has been reduced by up to 9 dB on a single sensor basis.","PeriodicalId":396946,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarCon13)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129461280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Future spectrum requirements will likely dictate narrower spectral masks that will change based on geography. The desire to operate radar systems efficiently with waveforms that will provide desired detection capabilities must mesh with the need to meet spectral mask criteria. To this end, a collaborative research effort between Baylor University and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has resulted in the design of reconfigurable circuit and waveform approaches to optimize spectral confinement, power efficiency, and detection capabilities. This paper surveys the joint optimization approach and describes innovations by the authors in circuit and waveform reconfiguration that will be useful in future flexible radar transmitters.","PeriodicalId":396946,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarCon13)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126658724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, there is a necessary trade-off between reduced SNR caused by power back-off to accommodate these AM effects and the waveform distortion that occurs when driving the amplifier closer to saturation. Here a method is developed to design OFDM-based radar emissions with low range sidelobes in the presence of transmitter-induced distortion. This work builds upon previous results for hardware-in-the-loop optimization of continuous phase modulation (CPM) waveforms to demonstrate how saturated OFDM emissions may potentially provide a feasible alternative waveform design scheme.","PeriodicalId":396946,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarCon13)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126981350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In practice, this is estimated via the sample covariance matrix using samples from the neighboring range bins around the reference bin. By applying compressive sensing, the number of training samples needed to estimate the covariance matrix can be significantly reduced, provided that the basis mismatch problem, inherent to compressive sensing can be mitigated. This paper presents an adaptive approach to choosing the best sparsifying basis, using dictionary learning to estimate the radar clutter subspace. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the desired reduction in training samples, and is more accurate than previous reduced-rank algorithm baseline.","PeriodicalId":396946,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarCon13)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124153865","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a key illustrative example, we consider a 4 × 4 system employing a unitary matrix waveform set, e.g., formed from Golay complementary sequences. When a non-negligible Doppler shift is induced by the target motion, the waveform matrix formed from the complementary sequences is no longer unitary, resulting in significantly degraded target range estimates. To solve this problem, a novel Doppler estimation and compensation scheme based on a clever application of DFT is developed that provides notable improvements, both in detection performance, and processing times. We present means to adaptively control the transmitted waveforms to further enhance the system performance. Proof-of-concept simulations are presented verifying the efficacy of the proposed Doppler compensation and estimation technique for our unitary waveform matrix designs.","PeriodicalId":396946,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarCon13)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126446404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novel approach distinguishes from the conventional InSAR methodology implemented in monostatic case, because the cylindrical projection rule in monostatic configuration has already transformed into ellipsoidal projection rule in bistatic counterpart. Furthermore, the contrast of vital InSAR procedures between these two configurations, usually called reference phase compensation and phase to height conversion, has been compared and highlighted in detail. Meanwhile, the examples of simulated data and real data process are discussed, which demonstrates the feasibility of the new algorithm.","PeriodicalId":396946,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Radar Conference (RadarCon13)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131349046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
