Solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) are considered to be a more sustainable option than traditional pumps, but are more costly to set up, limiting their use to direct rice irrigation. This study intended to integrate solar-powered pumps in the irrigation system and investigate its viability through the following: establish an appropriate motor size, determine solar panel tilt, and compare with traditional irrigation pumping. The system was comprised of a positive displacement-type solar pump, photovoltaic panels, a charge controller, a battery, and an elevated, lined water impounding system for aquaculture. Tilt angles varying between 5 and 10 degrees were tested by measuring the current drawn from the photovoltaic panels. Three motor sizes were used and compared based on flow rate and volume of water pumped per full 100Ah battery, and the effect of the water impounding system along with raising tilapia on the growth of rice was determined. Results revealed that a 200-watt motor pumps the most water per full battery charge, and that the monthly computed panel tilt had the highest harvested energy. Furthermore, solar-powered rice-fish culture gave a higher yield compared to traditional diesel-pump irrigation, and calculations on the system’s economic feasibility show a benefitcost ratio of 1.26 and a payback period of 2.87 years.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"254 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123121311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative single case study sought to determine topnotchers preparations and attributes deemed contributory  to  successful topping of the LET. Data were obtained through interviews from  the seven (7) purposively sampled participants who were the pioneering batches of LET topnotchers in the BEEd program, covering years 2011-2015. Semi-structured in-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted to gather results for an information-rich case study. Qualitative data analysis was applied identifying emergent categories and themes based on participants quotes excerpted from interview transcripts. Findings indicate that BEEd topnotchers preparations consisted of the following: goal setting and knowing oneself; interest in reading and overlearning the material; being test-wise and understanding the nature of the LET; and attending a LET review program and committing to it. Five strong contributory attributes were also revealed such as: having metacognitive test-taking skill; strong faith in God; good support system; solid foundation in college; and active participation in a study group. Majority of them expressed their College  (the College of Teacher Education and Technology) contribution and influence to their success through competency-based  instruction,  quality  faculty  and LET-type assessment. More intensive and extensive training and enhancement which focuses on the identified preparations and contributory attributes may be targeted to produce a common ground for effective teaching-learning practice for future graduates.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"331 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121596001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study also determined the  effect of moisture content level, sieving speed and mesh screen size on harvesting capacity and separation efficiency. The study was laid  out  in  factorial  experiment arranged in complete randomized design (CRD). The prototype consisted of a (1) composting bed with natural aeration and screen mesh at the bottom for automatic daily harvesting   of vermicast and vermicomposting leachate (VCL), (2) automated watering sprinkler system, (3) vermicast and VCL storage beneath the composting bed, and (4) control system. During harvesting, composting bed is suspended in the main frame and is driven by an electric motor creating oscillating motion, thus sieving, separating the vermicast and leaving the worm in the bed. Analysis of Variance found that all factors significantly affected the harvesting capacity. However, there was no interaction effect among the three factors on harvesting capacity and separation efficiency. Highest harvesting capacity of 74.41 g/s was obtained at lowest moisture content (40%), largest sifter size (1/4) and highest speed (310 rpm). Highest separation efficiency of 32.33 g/s was obtained at any moisture content) and largest sifter size (1/4). Daily cast and vermi leachate collected were 4 kg and 5 liters, respectively. An increase of 800 grams in worm population was recorded. The prototype had a BCR of 1.975 and IRR of 55% after 3 years of utilization.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123349783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Success is measured in relation to the implementation of Re-Entry Action Plans (REAP), degree of change introduced in the workplace, and personal development. However, the level of success of returning scholars has not been studied. In fact, some scholars were considered less successful, and there were cases wherein they were unable to implement or complete their REAPs. This study aimed to develop a framework to show contrasting factors that contribute to scholars' success levels. A sequential exploratory mixed method was utilized. The scholars' assignment (their workload/designation/rank in their employing organization) and qualities, their motivation, and the extent of scholarship support were considered facilitating factors in their level of success. However, colleagues and support from superiors were found to be hindering factors. Multiple regression reinforced that assignment appeared to be a predictor of success for returning scholars and to some extent scholars' qualities may also facilitate their success. Consequently, in selecting potential grantees for Australia Awards, work-related indicators and personal qualities may be useful factors to be considered in the scholars' selection criteria.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121254523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Management of the pest is indispensable for successful pummelo production. The study was conducted to determine the best cost-effective treatment to manage the pest-infesting pummelo. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments replicated three times. The treatments were: curry tree leaf leachate, neem tree leaf leachate, bagging with an ordinary net, treated check (Chlorpyrifos + Beta-cyfluthrin), and untreated check. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance while the differences among treatment means were computed using the Tukey's Honest Significant Difference. Results revealed that the cost-effective treatment against the destructive citrus rind borer is the bagging treatment. Bagging of fruits is more economical and environmentally sound over the use of chemical pesticides (Chlorpyrifos + Beta-cyfluthrin).","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"39 12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129078218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An initiative of the University of Southeastern Philippines Extension Office and the Archdiocesan Action Center of Davao City, the Sagop Kinabuhi Program 2 (SKP2) aims to provide socioeconomic opportunities to former drug users. This paper details the participatory action research that involves this marginalized sector, their families and the representatives of the various government and nongovernment agencies comprising the SKP2 platform. Using critical systemic approach to address issues related to drug dependency, poverty and vulnerability, the participants were led to regain their self-respect and self-confidence through various pathways designed to enhance their skills and capabilities. Their narratives and the findings suggest that the dominant strategies being used to address the problems confronted by the drug dependents and their families are positivist and systematic. They do not reflect the individual voice, choice and agency of the victims of drug dependency. Community drug rehabilitation therefore must be systemic and inclusive to ensure that the strategies used are reflective of the real interests of this sector and their families.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126853674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mixed methods approach was used to generate qualitative and quantitative measures. These included the conduct of focus group discussion, survey, and field visits. There were 10 participants in the FGD and 154 respondents for the survey. Regression analysis was used to explain the determinants of the effectiveness of established program objectives. Return on investment and value for money estimates showed that farmers' income increased. Moreover, the sufficiency of inputs and conduciveness of the facilities were found to directly relate to program success. Consequently, the implementation of LS and SPA is deemed effective and sustainable.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128820767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, research data on soil quality, which is vital to enhancing soil fertility and crop yield, is limited particularly on the soil in the rice fields located in Langkong, Mlang, Cotabato. This study aims to assess the soil quality of one of the organic rice farms in said area. Soil samples were collected in thirty-one (31) paddies for two sampling periods: thirty (30) days after harvest and thirty (30) days after rice transplanting. Eight (8) soil indicators representing soil physicochemical characteristics were measured from 0-15 cm depth; the indicators were soil texture, water holding capacity, pH, exchangeable phosphorus, extractable potassium, total organic matter, electrical conductivity, and cation exchange capacity. Results reveal that soils in the studied area are characterized by clay loam with moderate water-holding capacity of about 62.57% and 60.57% for both sampling periods, respectively. The soil is strongly acidic (5.3 and 5.5) and has a low amount of organic matter (2.16% and 1.57%) and exchangeable P (8.55 ppm and 2.48 ppm), although it has marginal extractable K (80.77 ppm and 91.10 ppm). Also, the soils are non-saline and have low cation exchange capacity. The findings signify that the soils have insufficient fertility to sustain the optimal growth of the rice plants which can potentially reduce the yield of rice production. Thus, amendment of the soil quality and enhancement of soil management practices should be taken into consideration to further improve soil fertility to ensure productivity and profitability of farmers.","PeriodicalId":396377,"journal":{"name":"Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125695449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
