The 3D orientation of the platform, computed on-board, along with the acceleration data, are collected by a computer. A specific algorithm has been developed in order to provide a reliable 3D position tracking of the hand without suffering from common error sources of MEMS sensors data processing, such as integration drift, inaccurate calibration procedures and finite integration times. This paper presents the setup, the developed algorithm and the preliminary results achieved with both a mechanical arm and a set of standard physical exercises performed by a human.","PeriodicalId":395550,"journal":{"name":"2015 6th International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127017031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the proliferation of communication and data processing devices has profoundly changed our interaction patterns, nothing has profoundly changed our means of processing inputs (sensory) and outputs (actuation). Many of these interactions are still funneled through a limited set of means (such as displays, headphones, keyboards, touch panels) integrated in a single device. The Swarm has the potential to change all of this. Consider the evolution of the smartphone. Over the past decade, it has continuously been accumulating extra functionality in terms of connectivity options and sensory capabilities. Yet, trying to integrate all of these into a single device limits both the user experience as well as the application scope. This motivates the various efforts on disaggregating the phone into an ensemble set of separate but connected components, such as watches, bangles, glasses, contact lenses, earpods, and other wearable devices. In this scenario, which we have dubbed the unPad [2], the personal communication device no longer is a single entity, but becomes a collection of devices aggregated in true Swarm fashion in an organic and opportunistic way. Some of those components may be carried on the person, while others could provided by the augmented environment around us. Given the very broad diversity of sensory and actuation interfaces offered by advanced technology, these unPads would offer an experience that is substantially richer than what our five natural senses and traditional motor functions (speech, motion) can offer. The potential is huge - think empowered humans in an enhanced world.","PeriodicalId":395550,"journal":{"name":"2015 6th International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121429470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerical TCAD device simulations were used first to characterize and optimize the performance of the TFET. The optimized TFETs show a steeper subthreshold slope than CMOS leading to a 5 orders of magnitude reduction in standby current. A look-up table model for circuit simulation of the TFET was developed based on characteristics obtained from TCAD simulations. A TFET SRAM cell is proposed and its performance is analyzed. Our novel 8T TFET SRAM cell operates at Vdd=1V or lower. The Read and Write Static Noise Margins (SNM) are evaluated at 120mV and 200mV, with the operation speed of 3.8GHz and 800MHz Vdd=1V in read and write, respectively. The cell leakage is less than 5fA at Vdd=1V. A sensor node architecture for implementation in a hybrid CMOS/TFET process with a large memory is proposed where the memory consumes as little as 2 fW/cell or 48 pW for a 4 kB array.","PeriodicalId":395550,"journal":{"name":"2015 6th International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"58 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131369044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A flexible thermoelectric generator (TEG) with a fully electrical, low startup voltage and high efficiency DC-DC converter is presented in this paper. The proposed generator has been produced by screen printing technology on 80 microns thick common paper and thin Kapton foil and integrates about 280 thermocouples, for an output voltage of about 75 mV with 5 K of thermal gradient, useful for wearable-oriented applications. To increase the voltage provided by TEG, a DC-DC converter is designed. It operates with an input voltage (Vin) range from 40mV up to 400mV. By means the pulse width modulation (PWM), the DC-DC converter achieves an automatic control, ensuring an 1V output voltage. It is composed of two control section: the feedforward control circuit operates with an input voltage ranging from 40mV up to 150mV. As the output voltage of TEG is higher than 150mV, the feedback control circuit starts to operate, achieving an automatic control of the output voltage of the boost converter. The DC-DC converter is implemented in 65nm CMOS technology and its peak efficiency is 85%.","PeriodicalId":395550,"journal":{"name":"2015 6th International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131521112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two modalities are accomplished by applying two different bias conditions to the diode. In order to prove the correct device operation, we have analyzed the crosstalk effects of the temperature variation on light measurement and those of the light intensity variation on the accuracy in the temperature measurement. We found that the temperature variation induces an error lower than 0.55 pW/K in the light intensity measurement at 550 nm if the diode is biased in short circuit condition, while, an error below 1 K/μνν results in the temperature measurement, if a forward bias current higher than 25 μA/cm2 is applied. The use of a single sensor for the simultaneous measurement of two different physical parameters increases the integration level in miniaturized system as, for example, in lab-on-chip devices, where optical detection is often required during a heat treatment of the analyte.","PeriodicalId":395550,"journal":{"name":"2015 6th International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"272 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133732749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The minimal functionality desired from wearable medical devices is the monitoring of vital signs. Pulse rate and blood oxygenation are considered primary vital signs that help to evaluate the general physical health of a person. The methods used to measure pulse rate and blood oxygenation with sensors based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic photodiodes (OPDs) are reported here. Departing from the conventional practice of using red (630 nm) and infrared (940 nm) light for measuring pulse oxygenation, we have successfully implemented solution processed red (626 nm) and green (532 nm) OLEDs fabricated from polyfluorene blends in an all-organic optoelectronic pulse oximeter sensor. The red and green OLEDs operate at 9 V, 1 kHz, and transmit light through a human index finger. The transmitted light is sensed by an OPD placed on the opposite side of the finger. After filtering and amplification, the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal is obtained and used to accurately measure pulse rate and blood oxygenation.","PeriodicalId":395550,"journal":{"name":"2015 6th International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces (IWASI)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127851225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
