For comparison impulsive, sinusoidal and chirp interferers are used and the corresponding bit error rate vs. signal to interference ratio curves are obtained. It is observed that, only the chirplet exciser can suppress broadband interference. The ATF exciser is the best for both impulsive and sinusoidal interference. The DFT exciser can only be used for narrowband interference.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat. Two distinct iterative schemes are used to determine the multiresolution functions, the so-called 'cascade' algorithm and an eigenvector-based method. We present a novel development of these procedures which not only encompasses both algorithms simultaneously but also applies to the computation of derivatives of the functions. With this we demonstrate that the differences between the two algorithms are due solely to their respective initializations. We prove that the cascade initialization can be used only to compute the functions themselves, while the eigenvector one works for their derivatives as well. Finally, as an alternative to the results of Daubechies and Lagarias (1991, 1992), we derive a new, simpler normalization formula for the eigenvector method.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat. The Teager energy operator (TEO) is a method for quantifying signal energy, a product of both frequency as well as amplitude. Using second and third order autocorrelation-based tests for dependence, we examine time domain methods of energy detection of sinusoids. To quantify signal energy we exploit the whiteness of the output of the TEO. The C-statistics examine the level of second order whiteness in a time series. The newly developed H-statistics test confirms the presence of third order whiteness or independence. A pure noise exhibits both second and third order whiteness. A power analysis of these tests for energy detection are also shown to be sensitive to changes in both sinusoidal amplitude and frequency. The Cand H-statistics allow for quantification of distortion in the TEO output as well. Distortion in an energy operator results from poor cancellation of cross-terms or from second harmonic distortion as typified by a traditional square law device. Fluctuations in band-specific EEG (electroencephalogram) energy also are amenable to practical analysis using the TEO. An example of an EEG signal with a large harmonic content are spindle signals taken from animal experiments dealing with recovery from hypoxic-asphyxic injury.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat. A trace, which contains seismic information, is called a seismic signal. Seismic signals consist of several typically short energy bursts, called phases, exhibiting several patterns in terms of dominant frequency, amplitude and polarization. Amongst others, significant phases are the P-phase and the S-phase. We present a fast algorithm to detect the S-phase in a seismic signal. In this method we use a combination of traditional S-phase detection methods from seismology and the discrete wavelet transform. First results are presented to demonstrate our new approach.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat. The results developed are based on the definition of a discrete-time scaling (dilation) operation through a mapping between the discrete and continuous frequencies. It is shown that it is possible to have continuous scaling factors through this operation even though the signal itself is discrete. White noise driven system models of stationary stochastic self-similar random processes are studied. The construction of discrete-time linear scale-invariant (LSI) systems and the LSI system model of discrete-time, non-stationary self-similar random signals are provided. It is shown that a wide class of non-trivial discrete-time self-similar random signals can be constructed through the models presented in the paper.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat. We present fundamental properties and analytical expressions for minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) filter banks, without constraints on filter length, under optimal bit allocation requirements. We also investigate a constrained-length version of this problem, which is applicable to practical coding scenarios. While the optimal filter banks are nearly perfect-reconstruction at high rates, we show that MMSE FIR filter banks enjoy a significant advantage (in the MSE sense) over optimal perfect-reconstruction FIR filter banks at all rates.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat. The features are determined using the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD). Three kinds of features are researched: the energy, the temporal expectation and the frequential expectation of the WVD restricted to specific regions. The restriction of the WVD is obtained by applying on the WVD a bidimensional Gaussian window. Given a feature type and a center position of the window in the time-frequency plane, the window parameters are optimized to provide the most discriminant feature. The discriminant nature is measured using a mutual information criterion. This provides a measure of the class separability suitable with any distribution law, and assuming no specific structure of the final classifier. The procedure has been validated with a classification problem of sleep EEG signals.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat. First, redundancy of decomposition of a discrete-time signal by a block transform defined by a special singular transformation matrix is discussed and its relation with an oversampled, power and allpass complementary, KN channel filter bank is illustrated. In the considered block transform the singular matrix can be partitioned into K subsets of unitary systems of vectors. Based on the parallels which exist between unitary transforms and filter banks, namely the parallel that any block unitary transform can be shown as a perfect reconstruction filter bank, allow us to relate the considered block transform with an oversampled KN channel filter bank which can be partitioned into K maximally decimated, power and allpass complementary, filter banks. It results in the fact that computation of frequency domain representation of a block of signal of length N, computed at M>N not necessarily uniformly spaced frequencies, can require less computation and can be more efficient than computation of the frequency domain representation which uses fast M-point FFT. It is shown that the fast decomposition of discrete time signal onto bases in vector spaces by the polynomial time-frequency transform is possible in a very similar way.","PeriodicalId":395542,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE-SP International Symposium on Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis (Cat.
