To teach young oncologists the skills needed to author a paper, we decided to emulate how experienced clinicians perform this task. The first step is to create a spreadsheet with all the clinical data gathered and submit it to a statistical analysis using a statistical software package. The most important results are presented in the graphs and tables. The results should be explained in a logical and understandable manner. Writing the “Materials and Methods” section follows, with all the technical information that any other researcher may need to reproduce elsewhere the study in question. A critical-thinking stage, in which a review of the pertinent literature is conducted with the use of a reference management software, should provide all the knowledge and questions to write the “Introduction” and “Discussion” sections. The “Abstract” and “Title” are the final sections to be created. Following these steps, the author can correct the first draft of the manuscript for submission to a specific journal. Choosing the right journal and answering the reviewers' comments are also important steps in this process. Even if a young oncologist does not embark on an academic career, learning how to write a scientific manuscript is believed to be the best way to teach them how to read such manuscripts during their lifelong continuous self-education.","PeriodicalId":395496,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Oncology","volume":"20 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141645746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most plaintiffs were male patients (70.8%), with a mean age of 69.1 ± 17.6 years. The lawsuits were filed in an attempt to obtain medications (67%), medical care or procedures (26%), or other health products (7%).The most common medications requested were immuno-oncology (IO) therapeutic agents, in 66 cases (pembrolizumab, avelumab, nivolumab, and atezolizumab), followed by the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine (n = 13), chemotherapeutic agents in 5 cases, erdafitinib in 2 cases, and enfortumab vedotin in 1 case.Pembrolizumab was the medication most frequently requested by patients undergoing treatment for bladder or ureteral cancer. Out of more than 50 thousand TNs, there were 1,349 requests for this medication. Bladder or ureteral cancer was responsible for 3.4% of all the demands for pembrolizumab.It is also notable that lawsuits were more common in the Southern (n = 47), followed by the Southeastern (n = 26), Northeastern (n = 20), and Midwestern (n = 6) regions. The lawsuits in the South were more often related to expensive medications. In the Northeast and Midwest, there were proportionally more lawsuits demanding medical procedures. The Brazilian Federal Government lost the lawsuits, representing expenses of BRL 42.1 million with these novel medications within the period evaluated.\u0000 Conclusion Bladder cancer treatment within SUS faces obstacles and shortages of essential medications. Moreover, advanced and costly therapies are not widely available, straining the public healthcare system and resulting in increasing legal costs. Collaboration among the government, the scientific community, and patient advocacy organizations is crucial to ensure the sustainability of SUS in the face of these challenges.","PeriodicalId":395496,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Oncology","volume":"91 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141647322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a causative agent of the disease. Recent advances in technology have led to the introduction of vaccines to prevent HPV infection. This study aims to assess the awareness of university students about HPV infection as a causal factor for cervical cancer and their knowledge about HPV vaccination. Assessing knowledge about vaccination among university students helps us to understand the level of awareness about it. Methods:A questionnaire-based study was carried out on 106 university students, from May 10th to July 26th, 2021. The questionnaire consisted of 10 multiple-choice questions and the results were analyzed using percentages. Results:Knowledge about HPV as a causative agent of cervical cancer was found in 84.2% of students.Awareness of the availability of the HPV vaccine was observed in 55.3%. Complete vaccination status was verified in 0% male students and 13% female students. No male students and 13 female students received incomplete vaccination. 33 men and 73 women were willing to be vaccinated with the HPV vaccine. Conclusion:The present study concludes that there is not a good knowledge of university students about cervical cancer and its prevention. There is also little knowledge about the HPV vaccine, meaning the availability of the vaccine, the right age group for vaccination and the recommended vaccination for men need to be improved. Vaccination status is poor among men and women because it is not on the national vaccination calendar. The desire to get vaccinated in male students was lower compared to female students. Thus, there seems to be a need to motivate male students for vaccination. Therefore, more awareness should be created about the HPV vaccine among students. The government through the Ministry of Health must incorporate the HPV vaccine in the vaccination calendar.","PeriodicalId":395496,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Oncology","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132424222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigates the longitudinal changes in albumin and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and CRP/albumin ratio (CAR) in patients with terminal cancer receiving palliative care in the last three months of life.Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of variables extracted from a prospective cohort study that included admitted patients to the exclusive Palliative Care Unit of the National Cancer Institute in Brazil. Routine blood examination results of albumin and CRP were recorded at 0-15 (T1), 16-30 (T2), 31-45 (T3), 46-60 (T4), 61-75 (T5), and 76-90 (T6) days before death and only patients with at least two measurements were included. Crude and adjusted linear mixed-effects regression models were performed to verify the relationships between the longitudinal trajectories of biomarkers and death. Results: A total of 1,635 patients were included. Median albumin was 3.00g/dL across the whole time-period analyzed (interquartile range, IQR: 2.50-3.60) and decreased with the approach of death, while median CRP was 9.31mg/L (IQR: 4.42-17.30) and CAR was 3.20 (IQR: 1.40-6.60), and both increased. The albumin (slope: 0.01 to 0.02; p <0.001), CRP (slope: -0.10 to -0.12; p <0.001), and CAR (slope: -0.06; p <0.001) showed a linear dose-response relationship with death in crude and adjusted models tested. Conclusions: The longitudinal change levels of inflammatory biomarkers worsen with the approach of death and could be used to predict end-stage in patients with terminal cancer.","PeriodicalId":395496,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Oncology","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134103432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this systematic review was to describe the pathophysiological characteristics of NUT carcinoma and to analyze the types of treatments employed and their efficacy. Throughout the text, treatment chemotherapy-related forms have been discussed that have led to the complete remission of tumors in some cases, such as the treatment regimen: alternating cycles of vincristine / doxorubicin / ifosfamide and cisplatin / doxorubicin / ifosfamide combined with focal radiotherapy (Scandinavian protocol for inoperable Ewings sarcoma). Other possible future therapies are discussed, in addition to the role of alphafetoprotein as a prognostic factor.
