As void ratio is related to porosity therefore the present of void ratio should influence the mechanical properties of the porous sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and limestone. In order to determine the microstructures including pores and cracks of the samples, sandstone and limestone from different weathering grades were analyzed using photomicrograph analysis method. From the image of photomicrograph, the void ratio of the sample was calculated using image processing technique. The uniaxial compression and triaxial tests were carried out to determine the compressive and shear strength of the same samples by using GCTS Testing System. Results for void ratio, compressive and shear strength of the four different weathering grades of rocks were correlated to see the trend of relationships between the void ratio and the mechanical properties. In relation to weathering grades, the void ratio of the sedimentary rocks increases as the degree of weathering increases. The results also show that the void ratio and mechanical properties of sandstone are closely related. With the increase of void ratio, the compressive strength and shear strength decrease.","PeriodicalId":39503,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Geological Society of Malaysia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46725533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is one of the popular water collection spots among the public due to its good taste. The research objective is to determine the pattern of fractures with water inflow and to identify the physical and chemical characteristics of the water. The types of rocks along the exposed cut slopes are coarse-grained granites and porphyritic coarse-grained biotite granite. Geological structures found in the study area are joints and faults. A discontinuity analysis on the six slopes show that there are five joint sets, namely, J1, J2, J3, J4 and J5 with strikes and dips N60 ̊E/71 ̊, N287 ̊E/69 ̊, N0 ̊E/66 ̊, N110 ̊E/66 ̊ and N305 ̊E/64 ̊ respectively. The fracture which the water flow from shows the same fracture pattern with the general discontinuities concentrated towards NE – SW and NW – SE. Low values of Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) and electrical conductivity compared to well water samples from industrial areas show that the water quality in the study area is much better.","PeriodicalId":39503,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Geological Society of Malaysia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42163266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flow of water through the dam body generate seepage forces and endanger the dam stability due to piping. Controlling seepage after construction is quite difficult and an expensive job, hence proper practices should be adopted for seepage remediation in the designing stage. In order to investigate the more effective techniques among downstream (D/S) sand filter with upstream (U/S) clay blanket and cutoff wall, the Baz Ali small dam was analyzed using finite element approach SEEP/W 2D. The seepage behaviour through the dam was intuited by employing 1 m thick clay blankets on the upstream side with extending lengths of 50 m, 100 m, 150 m, 200 m, 250 m and 300 m. Furthermore, 5 m, 7.5 m and 10 m deep cut-off walls having 0.5 m and 1 m thickness were embedded for seepage mitigation. The seepage values obtained from SEEP/W 2D models were compared with each other. The SEEP/W 2D results and cost analysis show that clay blanket is more effective and an economical technique than a cut-off wall for tackling seepage issue. Hence, an upstream blanket of 100 m length is more efficient to diminish the seepage up to 58.65% in contrast to the base case without the remedial system.","PeriodicalId":39503,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Geological Society of Malaysia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42705842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A correlation between spikes on the spectral gamma ray logs and petrographic analysis of cores and cutting samples points to Thorium-bearing, apatite-rich sandstones and siltstones as the main source of radioactivity. The elevated radioactivity levels occur within meandering channel sequences with sediment derived from the Malay Peninsula, the Johor Platform and perhaps some local cuesta ridges nearby on the Tenggol Arch. Commonly, the anomalous radioactive intervals are represented by flasersand/silt and clay associations. Given the relatively thin radioactive intervals, measuring at most a few metres, these sandy intervals cannot be imaged on seismic data, but could be used as a tool for correlating reservoir units at reservoir or field scale. Furthermore, the high radioactivity due to Thorium (Th) and Uranium (U) could lead to wrong estimates of clay and sand percentages, unless they are corrected with the help of spectral gamma ray logging.","PeriodicalId":39503,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Geological Society of Malaysia","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43107400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
