The future network, the Defence Information Systems Network (DISN), is now being formulated. A fundamental architectural attribute of the DISN is the inclusion of three serving areas, the local base, the regional area, and the long-haul interconnecting structure. The authors discuss the results of a study which was initiated to perform a feasibility assessment of integrating and consolidating telecommunications (voice, data, and video) services within a regional area. A regional area consists of a number of military bases which are situated within close geographic proximity. All of the services and defense agencies within the region will become part of a single unified communications service network. Based on information collected and analyzed for two regions, results have shown that regionalization can provide economic benefits.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114865198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Connectionless services and connection-oriented services are compared, and their appropriateness for use in a tactical environment is analyzed. Conclusions are drawn on which technology is most appropriate for shipboard use and for use between land-based command centers. It is pointed out that FDDI networks are ideal for connecting existing local area networks (LANs) and have properties making them especially well suited for shipboard use. The use of ISDN and broadband-ISDN services ashore between command centers and other such installations is desirable for economic reasons and reasonable because the operating environment is less hostile.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121946896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modulation model is formed by estimating the instantaneous frequency and bandwidth using autoregressive spectrum analysis. In particular, the instantaneous bandwidth and derivative of the instantaneous frequency prove to be valuable parameters in estimating modulation type. This method performed extremely well for input carrier-to-noise ratios as low as 15 dB. Additionally, since the autoregressive fit to the frequency spectrum is second order, the autoregressive polynomials coefficients and corresponding roots can be computed with closed-form expressions. Thus, the method is computationally efficient.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115740130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To support low-altitude sensor satellites the authors advocate the establishment of a general-purpose space based communication infrastructure at medium or geosynchronous Earth orbit (MEO or GEO), to support the needs of future sensor systems. This communication infrastructure should be able to transfer information from a multitude of sensor-rate mobile uplinks (from ground based, airborne, and low Earth orbit (LEO) sensors) to a few GEPs (ground entry points) at aggregate rates. In addition, low rate control channels will be available with all these links (in the opposite direction). This communication infrastructure should be based on a well-defined protocol (interface specification), that fits into the global communication security architecture in use.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115755577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is suitable for obtaining performance both in partial-band noise jamming plus system noise and in multiple-tone jamming plus system noise. The analysis of 8-ary and binary NCFSK with a constant energy per hop is presented to demonstrate the method. The method is verified by comparison to earlier simulation results for 8-ary NCFSK in broadband noise, and a number of performance features are identified.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130006881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In principle, each bit is repeated on L different hops and, for the frequency-hopped/CPFSK system analyzed, these repetitions are combined to yield a soft decision. The main result of the work is that a diversity gain for error rate improvement in worst-case partial-band jamming is realized for the different detector preceded by a limiter, but not for the differential detector without a limiter. This result is shown by considering the error probability for L=2 in comparison with that for L=1.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134127138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To maintain high quality, LPI communications in this environment requires a spread spectrum system to use fast acting adaptive power control (APC). In addition, proper design requires a thorough knowledge of propagation loss vs. distance. The authors show that the standard loss model, where P/sub R/=P/sub S/ (d/d/sub 0/)/sup -n/ and n=2 for free space or 3 for the Hata model, is incorrect. A correct model is presented with experimental verification. In addition, the authors show that an open-loop APC provides fast acting, linear operation when using broadband-CDMA (code division multiple access) with a chip rate of 24 Mchip/s.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131891009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance of the two-level detector is computed for the case where the active correlations use sequential detection and compared to the conventional case where fixed correlation times are used. The results show that sequential detection can significantly reduce the amount of hardware required to achieve a specified probability of detection in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise and partial band noise jamming under normal operating conditions. However, when the signal-to-interference level is low and/or the required detection probability is high, sequential detection requires more hardware than fixed direction.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130792044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A user with only a basic understanding of PCs and Windows will be able to use the system to predict the performance of any antenna structure or communication link. This broad applicability is achieved by integrating a unique selection of available algorithms into a single package. The system uses closed-form and simple moment method (MM) solutions that allow an analyst to perform quick parametric studies of generic antenna types. It also uses state-of-the-art MM and GTD (geometric theory of diffraction) codes to model in detail virtually any antenna structure of any size. Propagation codes are included so that complete end-to-end system performance can be determined.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":394587,"journal":{"name":"MILCOM 92 Conference Record","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130866947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
