We have developed a hierarchical storage management system (HSMS) as the architecture for the development of a high-speed home server with a very large capacity. This paper first describes the required specifications and memory constructions of the home server and then proposes a model of the new HSMS. With this system one can be directly contacted anywhere within the company, and the transfer function allows the reception of important telephone calls even when on holiday or just out of the office. We explain the problems of transmitting an audio signal which has to be sent in real time via an Ethernet LAN which cannot guarantee real time transmission, along with some of the solutions. We designed it to be compact and efficient by utilizing the rule of the DVD recording code. By experiment, we confirmed that the Viterbi decoder reproduced digital data more precisely than a conventional bit-by-bit decoder. Thereby it improves the reliability of the DVD players. It was integrated into a data processing LSI which restores digital data streams recorded on the DVD. By employing this LSI, we have developed DVD video players, DVD-ROM drives, DVD-recordable drives, and DVD car navigation systems. We introduced an occlusion indicating parameter to the cost function to take into account discontinuity and occlusion. For occluded area, occluded points are coded independently and non-occluded points are fed into the dynamic programming to find disparity vectors. The algorithm with a moderate window size has a shorter acquisition time than the immediate verification algorithm has-especially in low Ec/No. This results from the fact that the window-based algorithm, which verifies only one code phase that has maximum correlation output, consumes an additional penalty time in each window even in the condition of frequent false alarms. It is implemented by the high technology of multimedia, information communication and software. This system is a low cost application system for the general home PC user. With the network environment of this system it is possible to construct a superhighway by connecting various network with the home network backbone POF (plastic optical fiber in the home) which is an IEEE 1394-1995 standard specification. We connected the Internet, intranet and various household electrical appliance (video, audio, PC, TV, phone, fax) with the home network backbone. Then we can use convenientiy/efficiently the multimedia home PC for the integrated home information service by the DooRae framework for an integrated information service. The Doorae distance home study system has many functions which are application (audio/video/text data, teaching materials, DB) sharing, white board to support interaction, a video window for participators, audio for dialogue, user's interface with icon and a environment configuration for collaborative multimedia distance education within the home.
