Based on the new concept, a system application has been developed utilizing the integrated technologies of the computer systems, communication networks, and consumer electronics. Center facilities and navigation are important features of the new concept for realizing an electronic encyclopedia of butterflies and wild birds. The electronic encyclopedia stores more than one thousand items of butterflies and wild birds in MPEG2 format videos and/or JPEG format still pictures. Boys and girls can arbitrarily retrieve them though optical free-space transmission facilities, CATV or Internet lines, and broadcast transmitters utilize the navigation. At the final step of the retrieval, the boys and girls can see a frame of pictures of the designated butterfly without requiring any other knowledge other than touch-panel operations.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. As its primary purpose is use in consumer RF products, the proposed design, operating from 5 V, was optimized for low cost. Close proximity to sensitive RF circuitry requires DC/DC converter operation with minimal radio frequency interference. Therefore, instead of using a switching type regulator, the proposed design uses a sinusoid signal with a frequency of about 250 kHz that is stepped-up to the required amplitude by an impedance transformation using an LC resonance circuit. A double wave rectifier converts the AC signal to a DC voltage. A basic idea underlying the converter design is that interference can be kept within limits by minimizing the amount of power to be delivered to the load.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. In this paper a code phase synchronization device which employs differential detection structure to enhance the overall packet detectability is presented. This device also employs the automatic threshold adaptation technique which was previously presented as a practical scheme to be applied for packet radio communication. However this method called ATC is not suitable for the fading environment which is common in mobile communication. By employing the differential detection structure as its signal preprocessor, the proposed device can still exploit the advantage of ATC and gives significant improvement in terms of packet loss probability in the fast Rayleigh fading channel.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. When a correct low-pass filter is used in a motion estimation and compensation scheme, the transmitted data and the total time to get the best matches are greatly reduced while the reconstructed image sequences have almost the same quality as those using original motion estimation algorithms. The analysis was held assuming that each packet repetition is decoded separately, and also for the case where the combined decision is used under time varying channel conditions. The first example is under constant channel conditions where decisions are held without packet copy combining, for various values of probability of failure (P) and a limited maximum number of transmissions (n). Results indicate that there is a large saving of energy by the ARQ technique compared to transmitting a fixed number of copies for rather small values of n, and the energy saving ratio increases even more with a larger n and also in the case for smaller P values. In the second experiment, packet combining is carried out on a per symbol basis. The overall packet is presumed to have near perfect error detection and possibly also error correction. For numerical comparison purposes a Rayleigh distribution was selected to describe the received power variation of the time varying channel. The results indicate that the saving in energy is substantial, though not as great as in the non-combining case. Unlike the previous experiment, the energy saving ratio increases only for decreasing P values and not for increasing n.","PeriodicalId":393861,"journal":{"name":"ISCE '97. The success of this kind of service is not only dependent on the progress of network and storage techniques, but also on the availability of open application service protocols and open interfaces to achieve the inter-operation among system entities. There are several interactive protocols available today for services. Among them, DAVIC is the most popular international standard for these kinds of services, and digital storage media-command and control protocol (DSM-CC) has been adopted for its service control and session control protocol. The operation of DSM-CC over ATM network is well defined and documented. With the progress in the technology LAN-based network many multimedia applications have become possible over this network architecture. This paper proposes a novel network resource definition scheme specific to Ethernet in order to operate DSM-CC over LAN-based network architecture. The digital television era seems to be arriving earlier than that has ever been expected. How to face the challenge of this new era is a serious concern of the industries at present. The VSB transmission system is accepted for terrestrial broadcasting of DTV in the US. As a counterpart, the COFDM system is accepted for DVB. It is natural of interested to investigate these two transmission schemes and compare the performance and the methods of implementation.
