Morphological notes on Bauhinia mollis and Bauhinia argentinensis (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae), new records for Argentina and Bolivia. Darwiniana 50(2): 339-354. The morphological variation in vegetative and reproductive structures of Bauhinia mollis (var. mollis and var. notophila) and B. argentinensis (var. argentinensis and var. megasiphon) were studied. This detailed morphological study enabled us to correctly identify herbarium specimens and expand the geo- graphic distribution of the taxa. New records of B. mollis var. mollis for Argentina and B. argentinensis var. argentinensis and B. argentinensis var. megasiphon for Bolivia, the latter considered endemic to Argentina, are here confirmed. Lectotypes were designated for Bauhinia mollis, B. mollis var guaranit- ica and B. appendiculata.","PeriodicalId":39378,"journal":{"name":"Darwiniana","volume":"1 1","pages":"339-354"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80095093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on molecular and biogeographical information recently published, this group is monophyletic and its geographical distribution isrestricted to southwestern South America. The study comprised the analysis of herbarium specimens including nomenclatural types, supplemented with collections and observation of species in the field. This paper describes the variation in the morphology of the genus, including habit, stems, leaves, inflorescence, calyx, corolla, corona, gynostegium, pollinia, fruits and seeds. The morphological and distributional differences between Diplolepis and related genera are discussed. A key to differentiate the species of the genus is here given. Within each species we provide the valid name, synonyms, description of vegetative and reproductive morphological characters, geographical distribution, ecology, uses, common names, phenology, iconography and specimens examined. In this work we developed a mapping of the current vegetation of Bioko island (Equatorial Guinea) based on supervised classification of a Landsat 7 ETM +, and a mapping of Afromontane forests, including data distribution, surface and forest types where Prunus africana occurs. We propose six new types of transitional vegetation between Guinean-Congolese forest and Afromontane forests and different secondary Afromontane formations. The vegetation map of Bioko had a Kappa coefficient of 0.69. Difficulties were encountered in separating secondary lowland forest classes from transition zones between Guineo-Congolian and Afromontane forests. Accuracy was highly improved when a second classification was restricted to the island’s Afromontane vegetation (>1400 m a.s.l.), yielding a Kappa coefficient of 0.81. Our results have appropiate accuracy for forest management demonstrating that remote sensing is a useful source for mapping development, especially in tropical areas with difficult access.","PeriodicalId":39378,"journal":{"name":"Darwiniana","volume":"30 1","pages":"252-265"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88274649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oenanthe crocata(Apiaceae, Apioideae), new toxic plant for the adventive flora of Argentina and America. Darwiniana50(1): 97-106.. The presence of Oenanthe crocata in Buenos Aires province adds a new species to the adventive flora of Argentina and America. This is a toxic plant native from Europe; its toxicity is due to the pre- sence, particularly in roots, of oenanthotoxin, a polyacetylenic alcohol. In its countries of origin, cases of poisoning and death of cattle and humans have been reported by the ingestion of the radical tuber- cles. The identification of the species was corroborated by comparing the nrDNA ITS region of the argentine material to all the nucleotide sequences available at GenBank, and by performing a maxi- mum likelihood phylogenetic analysis of Oenanthespecies. Moreover, Oenanthe divaricatais referred to the synonymy of O. crocata for the first time. This contribution describes and illustrates this new record, provides a distribution map and points the differential characters with other apioids that grow in Argentina.","PeriodicalId":39378,"journal":{"name":"Darwiniana","volume":"71 1","pages":"97-106"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76256753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phylogenetic Analysis of the genus Sacciolepis (Poaceae, Pani- coideae, Paniceae) based on morphological characters. Darwiniana 50(1): 81-96. Sacciolepis (Poaceae, Panicoideae, Paniceae) is a pantropical genus composed by 23 species, mainly distributed in Africa, with some taxa in America, Asia and Australia. The aims of this work are to test the monophyly of Sacciolepis and to explore its infrageneric relationships. Thirty-one taxa and 80 morphological and anatomical characters, including continuous characters, were analyzed under the maximum parsimony criterion. The monophyly of Sacciolepis was corroborated and its diagnostic cha- racters were discusssed. Aromatic plants with underground organs of cultural significance in Argentine Patagonia: an approach to its uses from the ethnobotany, sensory perception and anatomy. Darwinia- na 50(1): 7-24. We have analyzed the ethnobotany and anatomy of five aromatic species with medicinal or edible use, highly valued in Argentine Patagonia: Valeriana clarionifolia, V. carnosa (Valerianaceae), Azore- lla monantha, Osmorhiza chilensis and Eryngium paniculatum (Apiaceae).We focused on the charac- terization of the secretory structures of the underground organs and their possible link to sensory per- ceptions and uses given by the people. Ethnobotanical work was conducted in two Mapuche indige- nous communities of the province of Neuquen and in two communities of Chubut, with a total of 53 interviews. The anatomical work consisted of structural and ultrastructural observation of the secretory structures. Informants indicated that E. paniculatum is mainly used to treat digestive and liver disor- ders; O. chilensis for vision problems, and A. monantha as urinary and antitussive; also underground organs of these three species are eaten raw and/or cooked. Valeriana species are mainly used as anal- gesic, digestive, antitussive and in cultural syndromes. The taste and smell are the main sensory pro- perties used to recognize and use the Valeriana and O. chilensis species. Azorella monantha and E. paniculatum are recognized by their morphological characteristics, but also are valued for its taste and smell. The microscopic observations revealed the presence of schizogenous secretory cavities in O. chilensis, E. paniculatum and A. monantha, and abundance of starch. In species of Valeriana periderm is observed with a high content of essential oils like drops. We conclude that these species have orga- noleptic attributes originated in specialized anatomical structures, which partly explain their food and/or medicinal uses.","PeriodicalId":39378,"journal":{"name":"Darwiniana","volume":"88 1","pages":"7-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86003046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
