Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are widely used because of their high efficiency. However, even higher efficiency is required in order to reduce the power consumption of motors. The structures of PMSMs using a powder magnetic core are considered. Since the powder magnetic core has very little eddy current loss, the core loss is expected to be reduced. Therefore, multi-pole PMSMs with a powder magnetic core are examined based on the torque, the losses, and the efficiency characteristics. As a result, the efficiency of 16-pole models improved in the high-speed region and a 50% reduction in weight was achieved by using a powder magnetic core. In addition, a torque equal to that generated by 4-pole models was achieved by expanding the motor diameter of the lightweight model. However, the model using a powder magnetic core was not able to achieve an efficiency equal to that of 4-pole models.","PeriodicalId":393430,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Hiroshima 2014 - ECCE ASIA)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128331047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The simulation results show that the ripple-less operation is possible theoretically. The fast response in the current control is also shown by using the simple digital control algorithm. The control for the load change is investigated in simulation. The simulation results show that the output current loop is more suitable than the output voltage loop. Experimental results show that the ripple cannot be suppressed substantially because of the delay in control system. Therefore, the suppression of the effect of the delay in control is next step.","PeriodicalId":393430,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Hiroshima 2014 - ECCE ASIA)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128607728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conventional way is to use heavy line frequency or medium frequency transformers followed by a controlled rectifier. The availability of high voltage SiC devices has made it possible to raise the switching frequency to higher value and hence the size and weight of the transformer can be reduced. This paper proposes a cascaded current source converter based topology with high frequency isolation as a replacement of the huge line frequency transformer. The one of problem of a commercial frequency transformer is bulky and heavy. In order to resolve this problem, we propose to use a high frequency transformer driven by three-phase to single phase matrix converter. In this paper, the virtual indirect control method with a space vector modulation is applied to the primary and secondary side matrix converter. Particularly, the control of the secondary side matrix converter should be considered because the input is rectangle which has multiple levels of voltage. The fundamental operation of the proposed system is demonstrated by experiment and simulation with 1-kW prototype. Besides, the volume and weight of the proposed system are compared with that of the commercial frequency transformer system at 50 kVA. As the result, it is confirmed that the volume and weight of the proposed system are reduced to 15% and 5%, respectively in comparison with that of the transformer system.","PeriodicalId":393430,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Hiroshima 2014 - ECCE ASIA)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124550802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed equalizer is also capable of relatively large equalization currents without increasing ripple current thanks to the interleaved operation of the MSCDs. Fundamental operational analysis for discontinuous conduction mode, in which currents in the equalizer can be limited to within desired levels without feedback control, is performed. The result of an experimental equalization test performed for four lithium-ion batteries connected in series demonstrated the ability of the proposed equalizer to effectively eliminate voltage imbalance.","PeriodicalId":393430,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Hiroshima 2014 - ECCE ASIA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129679312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Signal injection is necessary for position estimation at standstill and low speeds. Response signals to the injected signals have position information caused by a saliency of the IPMSMs. The position information appears in inductances depending on the rotor positions, therefore, time derivative of motor currents has to be measured directly or indirectly. The position estimation method discussing in this paper is based on an EEMF (Extended Electromotive Force) model. Although the EEMF model is mainly used in middle and high speed regions of IPMSM drives, it can be applied all speed regions by combining with signal injection methods. We apply a signal injection method to stabilize the estimation and reduce the effects of disturbances. Then the amplitude of the signal currents is adjusted so as to keep an enough amplitude of EEMF against disturbances. Signal settings become easier because the lower limit of EEMF can be adjusted against a degree of disturbances.","PeriodicalId":393430,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Hiroshima 2014 - ECCE ASIA)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129892262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although coupled inductors for POL converters have been proposed in several studies, a coupled multilayer chip inductor has not examined because of the difficulty of its construction. In this paper, a novel coupled multilayer chip inductor for interleaved POL converters is proposed. This novel coupled inductor has a winding pair with inversely coupled in the magnetic core. Further, magnetic material of the coupled inductor is Fe-based metal composite powder (Fe-Si-Cr). In addition, Fe-based powder in the magnetic core has been processed electrical insulation by highly crystallized oxide nano-layer in order to reduce eddy-current losses. Its high efficiency performance is evaluated by interleaved step down chopper circuit prototype using normally off typed GaNFETs with 1MHz switching frequency.","PeriodicalId":393430,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Power Electronics Conference (IPEC-Hiroshima 2014 - ECCE ASIA)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126880888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
