A design technique incorporating combined recursive-interlacing and sliding mode methods for the regulation of certain three-dimensional uncertain systems is proposed. This method can be readily extended to more general higher order nonlinear systems. The throttle actuator has two valves that can be opened and closed for control purposes which in return exhibits two modes of operation. Meanwhile the model of the actuator switches between two structures, one of which is stable and the other unstable. Due to the nature of the control input, a sliding mode controller is designed to regulate the throttle opening to a desired value. The stability and convergence properties of the closed loop system are investigated in the framework of variable structures. A modified asymptotic observer is designed to estimate the state variables where steady state Kalman filter gains are used. The control scheme is composed of two elements. The first element, the fuzzy sliding mode controller, is used to drive the state variables to a specific switching hyperplane or a desired trajectory. The second one is developed based on the concept of the fuzzy cerebellar model articulation controller (FCMAC) and adaptive heuristic critic (AHC). Both compose a forward compensator to reduce the chattering effect or cancel the influence of system uncertainties. The proposed control is based on the time delay estimation used in the time delay control (TDC) presented by Youcef-Toumi (1990, 1992). The sufficient condition for satisfying the reaching condition is presented by the application of Lyapunov direct method. The proposed control can be realized with a sufficiently low switching gain. In particular, continuous fermentation processes exhibiting nonlinear parametric uncertainty are considered. The control design is carried out with direct use of nonlinear model, expert knowledge and on-line measurement of output variable only. The smooth control input signal is obtained by realizing the sliding mode with respect to the highest control derivative. The system invariance to parameter uncertainties and external disturbance are guaranteed. For the minimum phase dynamical systems with arbitrary relative degrees (with respect to the relation between disturbance-output), the higher order filters of the disturbance is estimated by using the VSS equivalent control method. Then, by some new techniques, the lower order filter of the disturbance is estimated. Eventually, the disturbance is also estimated. Thus, the state vector is asymptotically expressed by the first order filters of the input and output and the estimate of the first order filters of the disturbance. The estimated state and the disturbance are applied to a controller to place a desired pole and to cancel the disturbance.
