Additionally, the support of intra- and inter-organizational processes has become crucial for the competitiveness of companies. Recent research approaches propagate to plan processes automatically to improve quality and flexibility. This paper discusses the application of AI planning for service composition in a service-oriented architecture. Three alternative levels of abstraction for service descriptions are defined and their impact on automated planning is investigated in regard to the provider and requestor role of service composers. It is shown that different abstraction levels of service descriptions are necessary to take full advantage of AI planning in a service-oriented architecture.","PeriodicalId":391459,"journal":{"name":"13th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124253793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of its basic features is the capability to deal with with the heterogeneous resources available in the grid, and, consequently, the possibility to support both new and existing monitoring tools in a modular way. We start from this observation to discuss what are the components of a grid resource monitoring system and the requirements they need to satisfy. We then show, as a case study, how the NWS monitoring tool can be integrated with a LDAP-based directory service. We use the results of this case study to outline a modular architecture for a generic resource monitoring system. A proof of concept implementation is finally presented.","PeriodicalId":391459,"journal":{"name":"13th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123271095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Central to all collaborative offerings, both academic and commercial, is the sharing of information and to a lesser degree objects. What we believe has not been properly accounted for, is that useful objects exist outside the scope of these collaborative environments as well. A subset of these, remote sensing images, can directly serve as collaboration starting points. In this paper, we propose to develop the concept of a \"collaboration beacon\" - an agent based mechanism used to initiate and maintain data-centric collaboration. Through an application of agent and data-hiding technologies, we intend to probe the efficacy of leveraging data as collaboration initiators. To advance the longer-term goal of achieving interoperability with CVEs, we briefly explore a mechanism to provide interaction with these external agents.","PeriodicalId":391459,"journal":{"name":"13th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126816859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experimental evidence has shown that the mere availability of high-capacity wide-area networks is not sufficient to obtain adequate performance if vanilla TCP is used to transport data. Consequently, many alternative solutions are being explored, and a variety of data transfer tools have appeared. In this paper we experimentally compare some of these tools in various network scenarios. Our results show that solutions based on UDP, adopting rate-based algorithms, result in better performance than other alternatives in most cases, while solutions based on TCP are effective only under specific circumstances.","PeriodicalId":391459,"journal":{"name":"13th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129086335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Models and conceptualizations are necessary to understand and design ubiquitous systems that are context-aware not just from a technological point of view. The aim of this paper is propose the multilayered multi agent situated system (MMASS) model (which provides an interaction model that is strongly dependant on the spatial structure of the environment) as a conceptual architecture for ubiquitous computing applications. The main contribution of this modelling approach to this domain is to provide a conceptual tool that allows to manage space as a first class concept and to consider in a uniform way both physical and logical spaces. After a brief presentation of the MMASS model, a sample application domain will illustrate how the model can be adopted to specify different aspects that are involved in a ubiquitous system.","PeriodicalId":391459,"journal":{"name":"13th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126543716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, it does not address security aspects. This paper is concerned with access control for BPEL based processes. We present an approach to integrate role-based access control (RBAC) and BPEL on the meta-model level. Moreover, we show that such integration can be used to automate steps of the role engineering process. In particular, we extract RBAC models from BPEL processes and present an XSLT converter that transforms BPEL code to the XML import format of the xoRBAC software component.","PeriodicalId":391459,"journal":{"name":"13th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"79 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131707024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Failures in assembled products may be detected at many points of the product life, therefore an early diagnosis could depend on the retrieval of all significant information recorded along the extended supply chain. The basic idea proposed in this work is to define a society of autonomous agents created to support the traceability of components information in a federated enterprises environment. We discuss, as a case study, a simple supply chain for the production of electrical appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators or dishwashers whose components' traceability is defined in terms of a kind of workflow extended for quality control (EQuW: extended quality workflow).","PeriodicalId":391459,"journal":{"name":"13th IEEE International Workshops on Enabling Technologies: Infrastructure for Collaborative Enterprises","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124033688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
