It enables municipalities and other authorities to experiment with various approaches to abandoned areas, vacant plots and unused buildings. The proposal of the paper is to define the main roles of an independent institution which serves as a mediator among all the parties involved in the process of temporary use owners of premises, potential temporary users and the neighbouring community. The research analyses case studies of the most significant temporary planning institutes in Europe and summarises the general principles of a temporary planning institute. Municipalities working with a proposed temporary planning institute possess a number of tools for the implementation of legible procedures of temporary use in the process of activation of neglected areas.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123755295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the paper discusses an inclusive way of contributing to city-making in which citizens create as well as add value to, and extract value through their collective efforts. The research aims to deepen engagement between citizens and urban design by dis-cussing an app-based participatory tool through which citizens can identify, record and reflect upon different space-making parameters in their immediate surroundings. This tool provides a novel vocabulary to challenge the exclusionary practices of contemporary data collection, and brings out the strengths of citizen participation within urban design.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121100068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of recent strategies of re-activation of historical buildings and their enlarged urban context in European and International case studies shows how these reuse strategies are crucial for sustainable development of contemporary historical city centres. The analysis of emblematic and renowned case studies aims at under-line architectural design strategies that make adaptive reuse of the built heritage a resource capable of generating added value for society.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132515615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper compares the current spatial planning tools for protecting agricultural land in the Czech Republic and Austria. Analysis of examples of spatial planning documents, legislation, and related strategies, their verbal description, and comparison provided an overview of the status of protecting agricultural land. The results show that there are tendencies and tools to reduce the consumption of agricultural land in both countries. However, conceptual land protection in the Czech Republic could be more effective if complemented with appropriate tools from the Austrian environment.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130192118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, built environment can be regarded as a system of signs simultaneously functioning in both the material order of reality and the symbolic one. The option to address both aspects leads to creating spaces that are not only attractive but can also be interpreted by their hidden meanings. The paper addresses the issues of the symbolic dimension of a city in the urban and social contexts while using the notion of “spiritual-ity in place” to seek out the qualities of the built environment that, through its physical design, allows users to find greater meaning in their surroundings. The objective of this research is to make these invisible qualities more understandable by exploring the relationship between the material form and the symbolic meaning.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133817388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The examples are described and compared to each other with regard to the target customer group. The Popper shoe shop and men’s fashion shops Weiss and Lassmann targeted a luxury clientele, whereas OPP confectionery targeted the middle class. The difference is visible in both the exterior and interior. The other method tracks the chronological development of Wiesner’s style and shopfront architecture. While the architect’s style was alike in the 1920s and 1930s, the shopfront architecture changed after 1934, when doors were recessed further into the shop, and the shop window area increased. In 1935, this new trend was applied at the Lassmann fashion shop. In contrast, all OPP shops kept the same simple style during the 1920s and 1930s because visual unity is important for the company brand.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123625392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through it, photographic records of the individual buildings have been created, which are compared with the current state of the development. The area has a high representation of foreigners and residents with a migration background, and, with 63.5 %, a high share of non-European cultural influences. For comparison, a small part of the urban district of Lichtenberg – “Berlin Lichtenberg” – is selected. The results show the effects of cultural differences (architectural and urban) – changes in groups (Shape, Mass, and Space), as well as, for example, by comparing the number of services in both localities. In such a climate, this paper problematises the conventional practice of designing for future users while determining all elements of programme and form during the design process, and instead argues for designing for the participation of future users and stakeholders by leaving certain elements open to interpretation, completion or change once the building is inhabited. Such an approach to design echoes the theoretical and practical considerations of a number of architects during the 1950s and 60s, who, in the face of the modernist paradigm crisis, saw potential in the application of various forms and levels of indeterminacy to architectural concepts to generate a new course for modern architecture, one that was rooted in an understanding of architecture as a dynamic and evolutionary process as opposed to finished form. Drawing on these theories, this paper explores the potential for their re-evaluation in the uncertain context of the twenty-first century. The relevance of indeterminacy as a design strategy in architecture today is considered firstly through a review of a growing current in contemporary design discourse explicating the value of this concept, before exploring its contemporary manifestations in architectural practice through an overview of several notable projects. In doing so, this paper aims to establish a renewed understanding of indeterminacy as a value in contemporary architecture.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129438523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A considerable amount of money is spent on the maintenance of these non-building areas. When maintenance efforts decrease, technical and visual aspects of the living environment also decrease. This paper presents a survey conducted in the Modřany housing estate in Prague evaluating current non-building areas and proposing three examples of model transformations. The costs used in the survey were taken from the Catalogue of Interventions in Housing Estates. Benefits presented in the survey are taken from a questionnaire determining residents’ preferences. The goal is to find the correct valuation of the money spent on development and management of public areas of housing estates and show it can bring great benefits for residents.","PeriodicalId":388648,"journal":{"name":"11th ACAU 2022: Proceedings of 11th International PhD Students Conference","volume":"194 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123554836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The question of protection and coexistence of these areas is very important today due to the growth of the city. The regulation of the Danube in the past predetermined the development of the city and set aside territories that are protected. The initiative to restore forgotten branches of Danube is current. The question is, what is the future of this symbiosis of the Danube, floodplain forest and Bratislava, and what are the possibilities of their mutual development?
