The influence of these organizations on the places and people they represent can be profound, but fans can make indelible impressions on society as well. This article explores the history of a cohort of San Antonio Spurs supporters and reveals the fan culture present for a time in a particular sporting space. It contends these fans were not mere consumers of sport but agents who represented a place and produced meaningful experiences and relationships. However, over time, this agency diminished due to league and organizational decisions.","PeriodicalId":38734,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sport history","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46472621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His writings showcase a wide emotional range, including white-hot rage and bubbling pathos. In his diary, Carter often decried the leisure habits of others, especially his son Robert Wormeley Carter, who constantly gambled on horses and cards. For Landon, if leisure was allowed to run wild, it threatened republican virtue, which was the basis of social authority and political power. Although Carter's diary is limited to the perspective of an elite, white, male planter from Virginia, his worldview was shaped by the assumptions of patriarchy and the institution of slavery. His lamentations about rampant games reflected his worries about his own corroding paternal authority—a private drama amid his larger, public anxieties about a crumbling social order during the era of the American Revolution.","PeriodicalId":38734,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sport history","volume":"49 1","pages":"1 - 100 - 101 - 101 - 102 - 103 - 104 - 104 - 106 - 106 - 107 - 107 - 109 - 109 - 110 - 19 - 20 - 36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43353126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
