Reminding fans of the national television audience, the editors warned that deriding Kemp made the city look second-rate. The admonishment had no effect, however. A cross section of fans—ethnic, Catholic, working class, and, overwhelmingly, Democrat—coalesced around backup quarterback Daryle Lamonica against the WASPish, conservative Kemp. “We want Lamonica” pulsed through Memorial Stadium like never before. Besides revealing an assertion of ethnic and political loyalties, the quarterback controversy anticipated and shaped the quarterback-turned-candidate's populist persona. Key to Kemp's political ambitions were Lamonica fans, disaffected Democrats who were also the core element of Richard Nixon's strategy to realign American politics. But the bidding for the silent majority differed in local and national races. Seeking to overcome his WASPish reputation, Kemp's brand of ethnic populism was more activist in nature than Nixon's token gestures.","PeriodicalId":38734,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sport history","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44136175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two years later, Segrave returned to Daytona Beach to reclaim the land speed record for England, driving at over 231 mph. His achievements were hailed in every leading newspaper in England and the United States. This article interrogates the cultural significance of Segrave's feats and argues that Segrave personified an era intoxicated with the allure of speed and infatuated with the power of the machine. Segrave also straddled the cultural divide between the values and virtues of the Victorian era and the emergence of the new technologically sophisticated modern world. Even more significantly, Segrave stood astride a tectonic shift in the place and role of England in the postwar world.","PeriodicalId":38734,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sport history","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46862597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the brand, Mayer created a visual embodiment of a self-defined sporting femininity that evoked strength and beauty. Mayer's personal struggle to define and defend a gendered aesthetic for women triathletes is at the heart of an oral history recorded for the Women in Triathlon History Project in 2019. A close reading of the Mayer oral history reveals a combination of rehearsed origin scripts, resistance, and discomposure. Considered together, the narrative and performative elements of the oral history raise the possibility of critical agency in female sporting apparel design and also demonstrate that competing feminisms and notions of empowerment combined to contest, shape, and reshape triathlon aesthetics. More broadly, the Mayer oral history reveals the extent to which oral testimonies reflect, negotiate, and craft versions of the pasts in active contributions to present and future discourse.","PeriodicalId":38734,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sport history","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47670213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
