The authors use extracts from a two-year observation and trace the baby's experiences of separations from birth until the final observation, situating them in the context of the internal and external resources available to help the baby manage the pain associated with loss. Observation material shows how the baby's capacity to play enabled her symbolically to communicate her feelings about the observer's departure and how an otherwise supportive and containing environment seemed to struggle to assist the baby in ‘saying goodbye' during the final observations. Studies on mothers' experiences of ending infant observations are considered in the context of the practice of psychoanalytic infant observation and the idea that the observer is often a positive and reliable figure for the baby and as part of the weekly routine. The paper suggests that planning how to end a two-year infant observation should relate to the child’s internal world and external containment, and that separation and ending the observation can be traumatic in some circumstances.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"22 1","pages":"105 - 119"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13698036.2019.1691625","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46444086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a brief exploration of the experience of our infant observation students, we attempt to highlight the importance of the preliminary meetings to the observational experience as a whole. Indeed, the first meetings which occur at the end of the pregnancy can be a very valuable for the observer. The meetings sometimes enable us to understand elements of the emotional environment which has developed during pregnancy and mark it out as a unique experience. Observing from the very first encounter adds a part of the baby’s story which begins in foetal life. We suggest that preliminary meetings represent ‘pre-infant observations’ which are part of the student’s experience of infant observation and can often reveal something which makes sense in the baby’s behaviour and reactions postnatally.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"22 1","pages":"104 - 92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13698036.2019.1680310","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49649739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From Freud onwards we have inherited the idea that the universally true and unavoidable psychological realities of human lives are illuminated by the great myths of the world’s cultures. Freud was particularly impressed by the wisdom of the Greek myths, and two of the most famous, the myths surrounding the life of Oedipus and the myth of Narcissus and Echo have given their names to central psychoanalytic concepts. Differences are considered between the physical and emotional process which expectant mothers go through the pregnancy develops with the psychological one for fathers, whose expectancy is in the realm of the mind, the imagination and of the stirring up of strong feelings. The paper explores the significance of fathers’ contribution to the baby’s emotional and psychological development, highlighting the significance of the expectant father’s contribution as recipient of the pregnant mother’s wordless communications, through projective identification, acting as a container, and later his contribution to the mother and baby’s successful separations, often starting with weaning, and later in other ways. The father’s different role from mother is discussed not only in the traditional idea of the firm, boundary-setting parent, but also and in relation to the mother–father–child triangle.","PeriodicalId":38553,"journal":{"name":"Infant Observation","volume":"22 1","pages":"147 - 164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13698036.2019.1689839","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49480107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
