Thematic analysis allowed us to identify and interpret key ideas (themes) within the data sample obtained from a corpus of module syllabi from undergraduate degrees in Translation and Interpreting (T&I) in 2019-2020. This paper presents the study from a purely methodological perspective. It explains in detail the different phases of thematic analysis according to the model proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006), together with the decisions taken in each phase. This is part of a broader research project that aims to map the current situation of technologies in the academic field (undergraduate degrees in T&I) and in the professional market of translation in Spain, when digitisation is directly impacting the demands of the translation industry.","PeriodicalId":38551,"journal":{"name":"Bellaterra Journal of Teaching and Learning Language and Literature","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135168372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accuracy of automatic corrective feedback in L2 competence development","authors":"Robert Martínez-Carrasco, Alicia Chabert","doi":"10.5565/rev/jtl3.1142","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5565/rev/jtl3.1142","url":null,"abstract":"The article examines the use of written corrective feedback by online grammar checkers as a tool for L2 competence development. While feedback on students’ writing is considered an instrumental part in their learning process, providing comprehensive feedback may not always be possible. Grammar checkers can therefore become an interesting tool to scaffold the students’ learning process as they promote self-directed learning. For the purposes of this study, a set of authentic EFL compositions in English (n=91; C1 CEFR) was subjected to a popular Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) system, Grammarly, in order to analyse the feedback provided, namely the types and frequency of errors and the level of accuracy in error detection. The findings determine that, while grammar checkers may be useful as a complementary tool, they are developed with native speakers in mind, so the feedback does not always meet the EFL learners’ needs.","PeriodicalId":38551,"journal":{"name":"Bellaterra Journal of Teaching and Learning Language and Literature","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135168867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Teacher training programs must provide trainees with both theoretical and practical knowledge and opportunities for developing professional competences in the digital world. The aim of this study is to explore the perceptions of a group of pre-service teachers from a Catalan university on whether their training program and internship enabled them to develop their digital teaching competence. While developing this study, we deployed various qualitative and quantitative instruments of data collection and analysis. Results reveal there are weaknesses in their current training practices but also suggest that a process of change is taking place.","PeriodicalId":38551,"journal":{"name":"Bellaterra Journal of Teaching and Learning Language and Literature","volume":"107 1-2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135168888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, tandem virtual exchanges provide the possibility of analyzing the negotiation of meaning of linguistic aspects from the perspective of plurilingual practices, such as translanguaging, which have not yet been investigated in these contexts. The present study examines the role that the linguistic repertoires of the learners play in learner-learner interactions in tandem virtual exchanges between college-students at a Canadian and a Spanish university. Eighteen learners interacted online while carrying out oral collaborative tasks where they negotiated and co-created meaning in their respective target languages. In these interactions, the entire linguistic repertoires of the learners scaffolded the conversations and contributed to mutual understanding. Translanguaging practices occurred mostly in inquiries and explanations about linguistic aspects where metalinguistic reflection played an important role.","PeriodicalId":38551,"journal":{"name":"Bellaterra Journal of Teaching and Learning Language and Literature","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135166580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Además de la implementación de la SD, se condujeron dos grupos focales con los estudiantes antes y después del desarrollo del proyecto para documentar el punto de vista sobre la utilización de la videoreseña como recurso didáctico para generar aprendizajes literarios. Los discursos de los estudiantes evidencian el desarrollo de habilidades de interpretación inferencial y crítica de las lecturas, mostrando una posición reflexiva sobre lo leído y exteriorizando un manejo competente en el discurso vernáculo digital de la videoreseña.","PeriodicalId":38551,"journal":{"name":"Bellaterra Journal of Teaching and Learning Language and Literature","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79189648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
