The derived algorithm was applied to a novel multisegment slant hole (MSSH) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system (Bal et al 2002) developed in our lab. For MSSH SPECT the acquisition geometry can be represented as four circular arcs, on the unit sphere of projection directions, where the central two arcs overlap to form a semi great circle while the other two arcs are parallel to and separated by a from the central semi circle. This MSSH geometry represents an over-determined system and hence the 3D filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm can have an infinite number of valid filters. Assuming all projections have similar noise levels, the optimal FBP filter is found by taking central sections through the inverse of the 3D transfer function of the backprojection process. We have followed this (usual) path to derive the FBP filter for our MSSH geometry. The new contribution is the intermediate results of the filter for an arbitrary circular arc on the unit sphere of less than 360/spl deg/. With our closed-form expression a large class of geometries can be constructed provided the geometry represents a collection of circular (partial) arcs. We have implemented the MSSH filter and run idealized simulations as well as physical phantom studies to verify the 3D FBP filter.","PeriodicalId":385259,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128562724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The trigger system uses up to seven detector layers and looks for hit patterns compatible to muon tracks in the bending and non-bending projection. The basic principle of the algorithm is to require a coincidence of hits in the different chamber layers within a road. The width of the road is related to the p/sub T/ threshold to be applied. The system is split into an on-detector and an off-detector part. The on-detector electronics reduces the information from about 350k channels to about 400 32-bit data words sent via optical fibre to the so-called Sector Logic (SL). The off-detector SL electronics collects muon candidates and associates them to detector Regions-of-Interest of /spl Delta//spl eta/X/spl Delta//spl Phi/ of 0.1X0.1. The core of the on-detector electronics is the Coincidence Matrix ASIC (CMA), which fulfils both the trigger algorithm and the readout of the RPC detector. Each CMA is able to process and readout 192 RPC strips from up to four detector layers. In order to keep the full Level-1 system latency below 2 /spl mu/s, the CMA has to rind candidate muon tracks with a latency of a few 25 ns bunch crossing periods. The readout part of the CMA is able to time tag incoming RPC hits with a time interpolator running at the trigger pipeline frequency of 320 MHz and to send the data to the readout system via a serial link. The design of the trigger system and the performances of the ASIC, based on a CMOS 0.18 /spl mu/m technology, are presented.","PeriodicalId":385259,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129258801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Programs using this information to create deterministic directory and file names gain autonomous file access, enabling automatic processing. Abstraction from file names and other computer-related restrictions allows control of the system through a user interface based upon more relevant subject and study details. A simple and flexible approach to automating the retrieval and routine analysis of image files is presented. Using information extracted from image file headers, files are stored using a consistent naming convention and organizational hierarchy that can be extended to diverse files, strengthening the association between images and their associated data files. Further processing is implemented through a graphical user interface, improving the speed and accuracy of complex procedures and reducing the need for advanced computer skills for researchers.","PeriodicalId":385259,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130419793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, TlPbI/sub 3/ is an attractive material for fabrication of room temperature radiation detectors. In this study, TlPbI/sub 3/ crystals were grown by the vertical Bridgman technique using zone-purified materials. The starting materials for the crystal growth were synthesized from commercially available TlI and PbI/sub 2/ powders with nominal purity of 99.99%. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to evaluate chemical composition of the synthesized TlPbI/sub 3/. In order to fabricate radiation detectors, the grown crystals were cut into several wafers using a wire saw. The wafers were then polished using Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ abrasives. Electrodes were formed on the wafers by vacuum evaporation of gold. The resultant TlPbI/sub 3/ radiation detectors were evaluated by measuring their current-voltage characteristics and spectral responses. Most of TlPbI/sub 3/ detectors exhibited resistivities more than 10/sup 11/ /spl Omega/cm. The TlPbI/sub 3/ detectors were irradiated with /spl alpha/-particles (5.48 MeV) from a /sup 241/Am source or /spl gamma/-rays (662 keV) from a /sup 137/Cs source. The TlPbI/sub 3/ detectors exhibited a clear peak of 5.48 MeV /spl alpha/-particles. Although the 662 keV peak was not resolved in the energy spectra, increased counts above the noise spectrum were observed for the detectors. To our knowledge, it is the first time that TlPbI/sub 3/ detectors exhibit /spl alpha/-particle spectra with a clear peak and /spl gamma/-ray spectra.","PeriodicalId":385259,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123913250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have suddenly discovered what we long suspected was true: neutrinos are more complex-and interesting-than the simple model we have used for twenty years or more. And unlike the rest of the Standard Model of particle physics which has been mapped in great detail, this new region which has opened up before us is by contrast completely unknown-we have entered uncharted waters, and the opportunities for exploration are greater than they have been for many decades. In this talk I will briefly outline both the historical background and the discoveries themselves, focusing on some of the technical problems that were solved along the way. I will then move to talk about future neutrino experiments, and some of the challenges they will bring.","PeriodicalId":385259,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121399266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The object is relative large and the entire object is not sufficiently measured, and the projections are truncated due to a small detector size. However, a small region-of-interest (ROI) is sufficiently measured. It is known that the Radon inversion formula is able to exactly reconstruct the ROI with truncated parallel unweighted planar integrals (i.e., the three-dimensional Radon transform). This local tomographic property is not found for line-integral measurements. The local tomography is usually not available when using iterative reconstruction methods because the forward-projection of the entire image of the object is impossible. This paper investigates an iterative algorithm that is able to accurately reconstruct the ROI using truncated planar integral data.","PeriodicalId":385259,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record","volume":"65 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114122567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore a quality check (QC) procedure is needed to identify defective photomultipliers (PMTs) or electronic components while using the scanner in routine studies. For the microPET/spl reg/ animal scanner no built-in transmission source is available to perform quality scans with reproducible conditions. Therefore the use of the natural radioactive background of the scintillator material LSO was intuitive for the realization of a QC. A QC for the microPET/spl reg/ system was developed. Initial values of relative detector crystal sensitivities are measured in an initial measurement. Sensitivity values in subsequent measurements are compared to the initial values. A logfile is generated, which informs the user about changes in detector sensitivities. The quality check was implemented for a microPET/spl reg/ R4 scanner. Around 1.5 /spl times/ 10/sup 6/ single counts per detector block can be acquired in a 200-800 keV energy window during a 1800 s scan. Differences in crystal sensitivities yield information about drop outs of PMTs or electronic components. Therefore hardware problems can be easily detected without the use of an additional phantom or line source. In addition, the validity of the detector setup and normalization can be tested. This will avoid image artifacts and resolution degradation.","PeriodicalId":385259,"journal":{"name":"2002 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121502842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
