This widespread use of machine learning has led to the importance of evaluating how Systems/Software Engineering approaches go hand in hand with Machine Learning to reliably integrate intelligence in software systems. In this research effort, our motivation is to develop a systematic approach also termed as Machine Learning Engineering for the selection and integration of machine learning algorithms in systems. The proposed approach discusses combining a structured approach for designing and developing system/software with an experimental analysis that data scientists perform on machine learning algorithms. This experimental analysis is essential as some of the characteristics exhibited by intelligent algorithms cannot be predicted or guaranteed compared to systems without intelligent algorithms. In this paper, we elaborate on our system/software engineering guided disciplined approach by comparing two machine learning algorithms that focus on the recognition of handwritten digits. The algorithms we compare are the Logistic Regression and Neural Network algorithms. After the analysis, we identify the contracts that should be associated with intelligent components to better predict the behavior of the system as a result of the selection of one of the components to be a machine learning algorithm. Finally, we indicate how the results can be used by Systems/Software Engineers in integrating intelligent algorithms.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128650634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The premise assumes that the ego vehicle is equipped with a LiDAR, radar or camera that measures the relative distance. A machine learning approach is presented where the feature is the time-to-collision (TTC) which can be determined from Kalman filter estimate of distance, speed and acceleration. The classifier produces classes of warning labels that combines alert levels with watch levels. First part of the classifier called predictor classifier 1, produces the alert levels by evaluating the TTC value of current instance; however, the second part of the classifier called predictor classifier 2, produces the watch labels by applying a novel mathematical algorithm that interprets past values of TTC in a given window. Alert and watch labels are merged together by warning labels generator to produce the final labels for the dataset. This paper presents the formulation and simulation results for the machine learning approach that utilizes neural networks. A future extension of the result will address a deep learning approach where the Kalman filtering & TTC features will be eliminated.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130764300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its purpose is to create and maintain architectures to achieve interoperability, sustainability and portability at both functional and software interface level. However, being a metamodel, ECOA only offers an abstract syntax and theoretical concepts to develop software and their interfaces. It therefore suffers from a lack of modeling language, tools and methods enabling real-time analysis during the development process of software. Combining the rigour of the ECOA metamodel with the potential of model-based analysis would not only allow a reduction in development time of complex software-based systems but also help improving system optimality with respect to hard real-time requirements. Translation of ECOA concepts into a formally defined and tooled modeling language is thus an avenue to explore. This paper advocates for using the UML real-time profile MARTE (Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time and Embedded systems) as it offers a concrete syntax to complete the ECOA metamodel with a certain number of annotations that serve as input for analysis tools. A method will be associated to this approach. Results of a preliminary study are presented both in terms of ECOA to MARTE translation and perspectives for real-time analysis of models.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123290434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experts have long sought to understand these dynamics and evaluate campaign performance using a variety of techniques. We explore campaign financing and standing in the polls as two components of campaign performance in the context of the 2020 Democratic primaries. We show where these measures exhibit represent similar dynamics and where they differ. We focus on identifying change points in the trend for all candidates using joinpoint regression models. We find how these change points identify major events such as failure or success in a debate. Joinpoint regression reveals who the voters support when they stop supporting a specific candidate. This study demonstrates the value of joinpoint regression in political campaign analysis and it represents a crossover of this technique into the political domain building a foundation for continued exploration and use of this method.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125469185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of emojis to express emotional feeling is an alternative approach in these types of communication. In this project, we focus on modeling a customer’s emotion in an online messaging session with a chatbot. We use Affect Control Theory (ACT) to predict emotional change during the interaction. To let the customer use emojis, we also extend the affective dictionaries used by ACT. For this purpose, we mapped Emoji2vec embedding to the affective space. Our framework can find emotional change during messaging and how a customer’s reaction is changed accordingly.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133501984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though many different sensor systems have been proposed in recent years, these solutions can only meet a subset of requirements, including cost-efficiency, robustness, accuracy, and privacy preservation. This paper provides a modular system approach that exploits radio tomography in terms of attenuation patterns and highly accurate channel information for reliable and robust detection and classification of different road users. Hereto, we use Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) transceiver modules providing either Channel State Information (CSI) or Channel Impulse Response (CIR) data. Since the proposed system utilizes off-the-shelf and power-efficient embedded systems, it allows for a cost-efficient ad-hoc deployment in existing road infrastructures. We have evaluated the proposed system’s performance for cyclists and other motorized vehicles with an experimental live deployment. In this concern, the primary focus has been on the accurate detection of cyclists on a bicycle path. However, we also have conducted preliminary evaluation tests measuring different motorized vehicles using a similar system configuration as for the cyclists. In summary, the system achieves up to 100% accuracy for detecting cyclists and more than 98% classifying cyclists and cars.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124241929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the unforeseen outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the public demand for delivery services has increased. Mobile robotic systems inherently offer the potential for minimizing the amount of direct human-to-human interactions within the parcel delivery process. In this paper, we apply a system-level perspective for identifying key challenges and promising solution approaches for modeling, analysis, and optimization of UAV-aided parcel delivery. We present a system-of-systems model for UAV-enhanced parcel delivery to cope with higher capacity requirements induced by the COVID-19. The proposed system-of-systems consists of various complex aspects such as assigning and distributing delivery jobs, establishing and maintaining reliable communication links between the vehicles, as well as path planning and mobility control. In a proof of concept evaluation, we simulate the logistics performance and network communications of a hybrid delivery fleet composed of ground and aerial vehicles operating under pandemic induced constraints, such as the prioritization of time-critical deliveries like medical goods. Results indicate that network requirements for reliable communications within the delivery fleet can be met by existing network communications approaches. Furthermore, gains in delivery capacity induced by drone usage and a trade-off caused by prioritizing time-critical goods, therefore, resulting in a penalty for regular deliveries, are observed.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122155263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines how natural language processing can be used during requirements analysis to analyze government regulations. The examples used in this paper are drawn from casino industry regulations for slot machine development, but are applicable to analyses of government regulations in other industries as well. More specifically, this paper analyzes South Dakota and Nevada regulations for slot machines and applies natural language processing to extract and analyze technical requirements derived from them using four techniques. First, key words and key phrases are drawn from the regulations using the Rapid Automatic Keyword Extraction algorithm so that they can be imported into a program glossary. Second, requirements are extracted from the regulations. Many of these requirements do not have the word “shall”, so a 12-rule transformation algorithm is used to convert the text into “shall” or “may” statements. Third, a Naive Bayes model is developed from the South Dakota regulations to predict which of the extracted Nevada requirements are functional, and which are not. Finally, a Dice similarity metric weighted with term frequency-inverse document frequency scores is used to identify related and equivalent requirements between the South Dakota and Nevada regulation sets.","PeriodicalId":384949,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon)","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121091495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
