T2*-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as the method of choice for evaluating iron content with strong correlation with biopsy, where T2* <; 20 ms and T2* <; 10 ms at 1.5T indicate iron overload and severe iron overload, respectively. Recently introduced dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has the potential for evaluating iron overload without energy-dependent CT attenuation or tissue fat effects. This study investigates the performance of DECT for iron mapping in scans of calibrated iron phantoms, and compare the results to MRI T2* imaging. The results show that DECT has high accuracy for evaluating iron overload, comparable to that of MRI T2* imaging, which might help in patient staging based on the severity of iron overload, independent of the implemented imaging energy.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133723267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

T2* measurement with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been established as an effective and non-invasive technique for evaluating iron content in the liver. However, different factors related to the adopted image processing criterion affect the resulting measurements. These factors include the exponential fitting model (single exponential, bi-exponential, or exponential + constant) and the size and location of the selected region of interest and whether it includes vasculature, susceptibility artifacts, or is close to the liver boundary. In this study, we investigate the effects of these various factors on T2* measurement using calibrated phantoms with different amounts of iron as well as on patients with different degrees of iron overload. The results show various degrees of similarities and differences between different processing techniques, which should be known by the operator for better selection of the image processing parameters and proper interpretation of the resulting measurements.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"290 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133265076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Often, these pathologies are painful and correspond with high or abnormal plantar pressure, which can result in asymmetry between the feet during pathological gait. These problems, if left untreated, can escalate to severe plantar injury. The diagnosis of plantar pressure abnormalities can be unreliable, particularly when using the traditional methods based predominately on simple qualitative clinical screenings. It is therefore imperative for the early intervention and prevention of plantar injury, by reliably detecting plantar pressure abnormalities. This paper aims to evaluate the feasibility of applying an artificial neural network (ANN) in identifying, and correctly classifying plantar pressure asymmetry during control (healthy) and pathological gait. The results achieved using ANN classifier models applied to the plantar pressure asymmetry of 47 participants has demonstrated good network ability in differentiating healthy and pathological gait. The models' generalisation performance achieved classification accuracies between 87-100%. Such an automated foot pressure-based recognition model may prove to be useful for classification and diagnosis of other foot pathologies such as ulceration risk in the diabetic foot.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132814505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model is derived from the reduced Navier-Stokes equation and is coupled with the evolving flow field solution inside the vessel by a similarity transformation approach. The results are computed, and compared with experiments available in literature, for the initial UCA radius of Ro=1.5 μm and 2 μm for the vessel diameter of D=12 μm and 200 μm with the acoustic parameters as utilized in the experiments. When compared to other models, better agreement on smaller vessel diameter is obtained with the proposed coupled model. The model also predicts, quite accurately, bubble fragmentation in terms of acoustic and geometric parameters.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115279135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the assumption that such governing rules are preserved against any joint constraint condition, an elbow joint DOF was fixed during the experiments with a light weight elbow brace. Two different coordinate systems are defined to interpret kinematics and dynamics of motion in a task-oriented space and an internal body space. The kinematic and dynamic contributions of the internal body frame on the task frame, is quantified by mappings. The experimental results show that the core principle of the CNS to determine the arm posture is to minimize the kinetic energy cost.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"327 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116641048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For multiresolution wavelet analysis redundant dyadic discrete wavelet transform is utilized to allow translation invariance and low resolution enhancement capability. Two alternative nonlinear gain adjustments, piecewise linear and Gaussian form of gain adjustment are used for coefficient modification for the enhancement of subtle details such as microcalcification and low resolution edges of different lesion types. The results of comparing these methods of gain adjustment are presented. This comparing has done by defining new parameters for measuring quality of image based on the extent of sharpening of image segments. Utility of the proposed image enhancement algorithm in mammographic applications is illustrated by an improved visual quality and increase in contrast enhancement measure as applied to different types of abnormalities.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129669603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apart from the desired drug effect, often such drugs disturb other physiological functions of the patient. Control strategies based on nominal pharmacokinetic models cannot ideally embody interpatient and intrapatient variability. Moreover, exogenous and endogenous disturbances also alter physiological parameters of the patient which in turn affect the pharmacokinetics and phar-macodynamics of drugs. Such parameter variations directly influence the output drug effect. Thus, a direct adaptive controller that updates control gains in accordance to system uncertainty and system disturbances can account for interpatient and intrapatient variability. This paper proposes a direct adaptive disturbance rejection controller for the continuous infusion of multiple drugs that have interactive effects. As a case study, we investigate the closed-loop control of propofol infusion while considering the synergistic effect of remifentanil.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123798972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a 6LowPAN based U-healthcare platform that contributes to the realization of the above expectation. The proposed system comprises two sensor nodes sending temperature data and ECG signals to a remote processing unit. These sensors are being assigned an IPv6 address to enable the Internet-of-Things (IoT) functionality. A 6LowPAN-enabled edge router, connected to a PC, is serving as a base station through a serial interface, to collect data from the sensor nodes. Furthermore, a program interfacing through a Serial-Line-Internet-Protocol (SLIP) and running on the PC provides a network interface that receives IPv6 packets from the edge router. The above system is enhanced by having the application save readings from the sensors into a file that can be downloaded by a remote server using a free Cloud service such as UbuntuOne. This enhancement makes the system robust against data loss especially for outdoor healthcare services, where the 3G/4G connectivity may get lost because of signal quality fluctuations. The system provided a proof of concept of successful remote U-healthcare monitoring illustrating the IoT functionality and involving 3G/4G connectivity while being enhanced by a cloud-based backup.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126904275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The enhancement is achieved in two parts: image enhancement at gray level followed by a color reproduction. The captured RGB endoscopic images are first converted into three 2-D spectral images using a well-known method called FICE (Fuji Intelligent Color Enhancement). Then the image with the maximum entropy is selected as the base image to be used for color reproduction in the next stage. In color reproduction, the chrominance map of a source color image is added to the base image. This chrominance map is found by matching luminance and texture information between these two images based on neighborhood statistic method. The distance between luminance components of base gray image and source color images is calculated using 2-norm Euclidean distance. The proposed method highlights some of the tissue characteristics in the base endoscopic image which will enable better diagnosis. The performance of the scheme is compared with other related algorithms in terms of simulation speed, image quality, efficiency of color reproduction and distortion.","PeriodicalId":384055,"journal":{"name":"2nd Middle East Conference on Biomedical Engineering","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128624778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
