The research on designing a living in Ngiwal State, Republic of Palau, attempts to bring to fore the crucial issues involved in this ongoing social change and offer solutions to allow societies and individuals to cope with them. A research team from Chiba University visited the research site thrice from May 2010 to April 2011 to conduct in-depth interviews and collect data about the area’s traditional dietary culture and public opinion. Based on an analysis of the results, the team concludes that: One, the local people are conscious of the importance of traditional dietary culture; however, the reality, or their behavior, does not reflect this. For example, many families do not teach their daughters the skills for taro cooking at home. Two, to pass down the social values associated with this dietary culture to future generations, implementation of the designing-a-living concept should integrate the essential design elements such as the communication, cooperation, concept of a “mother’s taste,” and ancestors’ wisdom. Three, the importance of traditional dietary culture should be understood to bestow a higher social value on diet because it affects family and community ties, as well as the environment. The purpose of this research: (1) To investigate aesthetics of visual design and its data analysis methods. (2) To examine the influence of aesthetic factors of dynamic icon on viewer’s pleasantness. (3) To identify the best action feature combinations that meet the optimization of respondents’ psychological characteristics and to propose recommendations towards dynamic icon design. In order to examine the influences of action features of dynamic icon on its aesthetics, three research methods, i.e., semantic differential method and conjoint analysis were utilized to investigate on aesthetics of dynamic icon. Study results have initially verified that aesthetics evoking level could be predicted by aesthetic factors. This research adopted semantic differential method and factor analysis method for data analysis. An “emotional vocabulary list” (a total of 20 sets of adjectives) was constructed and scaled down by factor analysis. A total of seven sets of key factors of aesthetics were generalized, including beauty, recognition, arousal, balance, variation, symbol and timeliness. The experiment employed conjoint analysis for data analysis to examine the influences of action combinations of dynamic icon on aesthetics. Ono, Makoto Watanabe","doi":"10.11247/JSSDJ.60.5_85","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11247/JSSDJ.60.5_85","url":null,"abstract":": Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP) refers to packaging that is designed to reduce the process of in-store operation; simultaneously it can help to enhance the customers shopping experience and provide benefits to the total supply chain. With these features, SRP has been adopted as an alternative principle for packaging design since it had been regarded as the best practice to improve working conditions in retail stores. However, relatively little researches were done about the SRP. In addition, under the terms and conditions of private use, most of foregoing studies are accomplished within the international trade companies. With this restricted knowledge, it is easy to find many design failures of SRP in the market. Hence, SRP design project was created to examine the problem of existing SRP in retail stores. The findings were used to define the SRP design solutions and propose practical ideas that could be taken forward to current merchandising conditions. Based on an exploration of SRP problems in retail outlets and the findings from SRP design project, the specific problems of existing SRP can classified into two categories: Impractical SRP and Improvised SRP .
