We developed a prototype of our design concept, and then improved it by involving elderly participants in a two-phase discussion. The proposed system made it easy for them to control any desired function by simply selecting a number. In addition, the touchpad and the built-in microphone of the remote control made it easy for them either writing or talking. Our prototype includes an introduction to the socializing platform, followed by a direct video conversation and an information platform. The purpose of which was to integrate the social functions of the media the elderly are already familiar with. This paper discusses the proposed prototype concept and how it can provide suggestions as well as a reference in the design and application of tools to assist the elderly with participating in social media.","PeriodicalId":383659,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Japanese Society for the Science of Design","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121191413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research aims to determine the kawaii trend transition in terms of its catch-up and spread including its adaptation and innovation to other places that concern on the background of region during the process of transition. By this study, the way of the trend transition occurs and its target result to other region can be forecasted, to be used as one of the design strategy during design development process. To obtain the study objective, 2 regions taken as the example of the trend transition which are Japan and Malaysia. Survey on kawaii image intimacy is done in each sample groups which are the stationery and car samples. For stationery survey, 30 samples and 10 respondents were selected. For car survey, 22 samples and 10 male respondents were chosen. Data collected is analyzed by MDS to determine the stationeries and cars initimacy position on kawaii image. Then, the MDS maps are grouped based on cluster analysis. A comparative study is done on each respondent’s trend groups. As the result, for stationery and car, 3 kinds of trend transition structures were determined. For overall result, there are 4 kinds of trend transition structures including the fashion area.","PeriodicalId":383659,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Japanese Society for the Science of Design","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128593892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experiments were carried out in a laboratory. Twenty-four elderly and young subjects separately participated in the study. The method of limits was employed to find the absolute threshold. In the experiment, various traffic signs were displayed on the screen with the size enlarging from small to big until participants could recognize the sign. The size of the recognized stimulus was recorded and then transformed into visual angles. The results show that the legibility capabilities of elderly drivers are indeed poorer than young subjects. Average visual angle of elderly group is about 1.6 times of that of young group. Ideogram signs can be better recognized by all subjects compared to the pictogram ones. When at speed limit of 90 km/hr, the minimum distance for recognizing all the signs cannot satisfy the requirements of the regulation. Based on the results needed sign sizes and changing sign location are proposed.
