During the time from planting until harvesting (rotation age), a number of young teak trees, which comprise mostly sapwood, are felled regularly due to the thinning to stimulate the better growth of the remaining teak trees in the plantations. There are at least 1.2 million hectares of teak plantations in Java, Indonesia, and 3.146 million hectares in other countries. In one of the teak plantations, for 1 hectare with the average site quality and the rotation age of 40 years, from 1,769 5-year-old teak trees will be felled regularly during the rotation age until 277 39-year-old teak trees remain at harvesting. From this study, consider the significant amount of young teaks from the thinning is available, it is necessary to utilize these potential material become suitable products by taking the advantage of its properties and prominent characteristics, e.g. border patterns and lighter color of the sapwood, to enhance its utilization and value.","PeriodicalId":383659,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Japanese Society for the Science of Design","volume":"152 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114093871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many studies have pinpointed the effects of music in different areas. In this study, the authors aim to explore the views designers have in regard to the effects of music in association to design processes. To achieve this goal, designers first underwent a semi-structured interview. Then a total of 538 questionnaire surveys were disseminated to design students, professional designers and design managers. Major findings from the study are: 1) Most subjects get used to listening to music in their design activities, and there are close interactions between designers and music. 2) Most subjects claimed a positive effect from listening to music, an activity which they considered to be greatly helpful in the idea development stage. 3) Subjects were in high agreement that listening to specific music helps to trigger special associations. 4) Most subjects claimed that music types are related to product design styles. For example, opera and vocal music is more likely to trigger associations to luxurious style.","PeriodicalId":383659,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Japanese Society for the Science of Design","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115474097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this aim, the changes in lower limb blood flow causing these symptoms were measured to each combination of the cushion and back angles. As a result, it was confirmed that the shear and compressive forces between the buttock and the seat fluctuated by the cushion and back angles strongly influence lower limb blood flow. This study derived the optimal cushion and back angles by the weighting factor method using the contribution ratio of the shear and compressive forces in lower limb blood flow as the weighting factors.","PeriodicalId":383659,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Japanese Society for the Science of Design","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115783991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previously we proposed the Multispace Quality Function Deployment (M-QFD), which allows designers to extract design elements with respect to diverse requirements and to understand their relationships, on the basis of the Multispace Design Model and Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM). This study improves M-QFD using the Design Structure Matrix (DSM). Benefits of the DSM include: 1) excluding indirect relationships, which prevents generating one huge chunk of design elements, 2) incorporating designers' opinions, and 3) considering several types of the relationships. The improved M-QFD enables modular composition of product components to be constructed in the late process of design. Additionally, a design example (design of an automotive steering system) is presented to demonstrate the improved M-QFD.","PeriodicalId":383659,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Japanese Society for the Science of Design","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124102781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a new technology of plant factory for home use was described in this research. This technology is an improvement of conventional aeroponics and it cannot only help grow vegetables easily and quickly, but also requires less water and energy than conventional hydroponics. In the research,the UNPF (Ultrasonic Nebulizer Plant Factory) was compared with conventional hydroponics in the environment of indoor, and to discuss the technology application of the UNPF for the design of home plant factory. It was found that the Potherb Mustard and Lettuce grew better in UNPF than in control group. The growth of the Potherb Mustard expressed by plant longest leaf length and the number of leaves and dry weight was significantly affected by the culture system used. The Leaf number and the Dry weight of Lettuce had significant difference between the two systems. By taking comprehensive view of experiment result, we can see that the growth efficiency of vegetables in UNPF was better than conventional hydroponics. This technology brings innovative feature to plant factory and inspiration for designers because the design of plant factory are no more limited by the tank in the bottom, theoretically UNPF can be designed with any performance, such as round, spiral and column. The new technique brings innovative feature to plant factory and inspiration for designers.","PeriodicalId":383659,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of Japanese Society for the Science of Design","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131514791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
