Adopting such a technique the Authors performed 7 future site developments, on 7 patients (2 males; 5 females; mean age 49.29±8.08 years), using a nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite. In the second stage, performed at 5.71±1.52 months, 7 implants were placed, after harvesting bone biopsies from the regenerated sites. The samples underwent histological and histomorphometric analysis.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The average percentage of vital bone was of 33.27±5.98%, while the bone marrow and graft material were 60.84±5.93% and 5.87±3.05%, respectively.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The results confirm the effectiveness of this method in restoring bone volume in the sub-antral region. In this way, the healing process is facilitated and osseointegration of the titanium surface may occur simultaneously, thus reducing the waiting time for the engraftment of the implant into the body. Unfortunately, these conditions are not always present. Hence, the need of developing an alternative approach that could simultaneously allow to perform sinus floor elevation along with an implant placement. Here we present the case of a 62-year-old patient that requires implant-prosthetic rehabilitation from 1.2 to 1.6 at diagnosis. In this study, we reported a novel application derived from the use of a heterologous bone scaffold (SmartBone@) in a sinus lift procedure. We showed the successful implant along with sinus lift with SmartBone@, both at the time of the surgery and after follow-up of the patient at 10 months from the implant. The possibility to perform simultaneously the contextual implant along with sinus lift dramatically reduced the waiting time for the patient of minimum 5-6 months required for osseointegration of the grafted biomaterials, before performing the implant procedure. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the available literature comparing clinical and radiological outcomes like the implant failure rates and marginal bone loss around platform switching dental implants versus platform matching ones. English randomized controlled human clinical trials, comparing one or more PS groups with one or more PM groups, with at least 12 months of follow-up after loading and 10 implants, providing carefully the number of PS- and PM- implants used as well as implant survival and data concerning bone level changes or marginal bone loss around implants, were included. Fifteen publications, involving a total of 1439 implants and 642 patients, were eligible. More studies showed less mean marginal bone loss around PS implants and none of them showed differences in terms of implant failure rates. This review confirmed a great effectiveness of platform switching technique to prevent marginal bone resorption. In Group A 10 patients had an immediate post-extractive implant, then a provisional, acrylic resin crown was placed (immediate loading). In Group B (control group) 10 patients only had an immediate post-extractive implant. Both upper and lower premolars were chosen as post-extractive sites. Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) was measured thanks to RFA measurements (Osstell®). Five intervals were considered: immediately after surgery (T0) and every four weeks, until five months after implant placement (T1, T2, T3, T4,T5). A statistical analysis by means of Student's T-test (significance set at p<0.05) for independent sample was carried out in order to compare Groups A and B.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000The ISQ value between the two groups showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.02) at T1. The purpose is also to assess the existence of direct correlations between the articulating click and lateral deviation, the headache and tenderness of the temporal, the back pain and tenderness of the sternocleidomastoid, the postural disorders and difficulty finding the exact mating closing, the disorders related to previous dental procedures (large conservative reconstructions, rehabilitations fixed dentures and dental extractions) and tenderness to the temporal and masseter. 623 medical records, including 451 males and 175 females were randomly selected. It was statistically calculated the F/M ratio, age distribution and frequency of muscle tenderness to palpation through the relationship of positive feedback on the total sample multiplied by one hundred. The correlation between various disorders was calculated by estimating the Mantel-Haenszel common odds ratio. Ottria","doi":"10.11138/orl/2016.9.4.157","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11138/orl/2016.9.4.157","url":null,"abstract":"PURPOSE\u0000In this article the Authors describe a procedure aimed to restore under endoscopic control, the continuity, of the Schneiderian membrane (SM) incidentally teared during a sinus lift with transcrestal approach.\u0000\u0000\u0000MATERIALS E METHODS\u0000In a 44-year-old male, due to aforementioned complication, the SM was gently detached via transcrestal approach, with a customized small ball burnisher, in order to facilitate the placement of a collagen sponge, to close the communication with the sinus, followed by the subsequent insertion of a graft material. All the procedure was endoscopically controlled and, considering the successful grafted area elevation, was simultaneously followed by implant placement. After 6 months the second stage was performed always under endoscopic control.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000The endoscopic view of the grafted area showed a dome-shaped elevation sited on the top of the implant, the SM was apparently normal with no signs of inflammation, the antrum was empty and normally functioning. Periapical X-rays were performed: immediately after the surgery; at both 14 days and 6 months post-operative; at 6 months post prosthetic finalization. The volume of the grafted area progressively decreased over the time while its radiopacity, on the contrary, gradually increased, as expected after graft integration and remodelling. Gargari","doi":"10.11138/orl/2016.9.4.164","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11138/orl/2016.9.4.164","url":null,"abstract":"PURPOSE\u0000The aim of this paper was to evaluate the histological and histomorphometric outcome of Preformed Titanium Foil (PTF) to perform Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) in posterior mandibular atrophies.\u0000\u0000\u0000MATERIALS AND METHODS\u000010 subjects (1 male; 9 females; mean age 58±11.37 years), with distal mandibular atrophies were selected to perform GBR by means of PTF, using a moldable allograft paste as graft material. The devices, made of a 0,2 mm thick pure titanium foil, were pre-shaped using stereolithographic models obtained from CT-scan of the patients' recipient site. In the second stage, performed at 6.7±2.33 months, 18 cylindrical two-piece implants were placed and the devices removed, at the same time bone biopsies were harvested. At 4 months, the implants were exposed and submitted to progressive prosthetic load for a span of 4 months. The cases were finalized by means of metal-ceramic cementable restorations. The post finalization follow-up was at 12 months.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000Survival rate (i.e. SVR) was 100% since none fixtures were lost. At the one-year follow up the clinical appearance of the soft tissues was optimal and not pathological signs on probing were recorded. The success rate (i.e. SCR) was 88.2% and the average peri-implant bone reabsorption was 1.17±0.41 mm. The average rate of graft contraction was 19.4±10.55%. We considered as controls those patients who, match-paired to their skeletal class depending on the ANB angle, did not show any CMD sign or symptom.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000Of the 128 examined patients, 15 showed signs and/or symptoms of CMD (11.7%). When compared to 15 patients non-affected by CMD, we could not detect statistically significant differences in both skeletal and occlusal characteristics. To determine the respective influence of each parameter, two treatment groups were formed; a strict and standardized study protocol was applied to minimize the influence of bias and confounding factors. The Pink Esthetic Score (PES) - the esthetic out-come of soft tissue appearance was evaluated.\u0000\u0000\u0000MATERIAL AND METHODS\u0000Sixteen patients with a single failing tooth in the maxilla and a natural contralateral site were randomly distributed into two groups. Treatment variations affected the provisional restorative in detail, group 1 with immediate implant placement and immediate temporary restoration with the simulation of the first three mm of the root and the seal of the socket, group 2 with immediate implant placement and immediate temporary restoration without the seal of the socket. All patients received the final prosthetic restoration 10-12 weeks after implant placement. Standardized photographs were taken eight months after tooth extraction. Five competent observers analyzed the esthetic outcome according to the PES.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000The overall scores of the four treatment groups revealed PES values of 8.47 (SD 2.08, group 1), 6.62 (SD 3.24, group 2). The differences between groups 1 and 2 and were statistically significant (P=0.015 and P=0.047). Two different varnishes were used for the study: Fluor Protector S, containing 7700 ppm fluoride (group I), and Cervitec F, containing 1400 ppm fluoride and 0.3% chlorhexidine (group II). A placebo containing water and ethanol was applied for the third group. Tooth sensitivity was collected according the Schiff' scale at baseline and after 30 and 90 days.\u0000\u0000\u0000RESULTS\u0000Group I and group II improved with statistically significant results.
