Drivers for the development of a tourism industry can be economic sustainability rather than environmental sustainability. Several issues are emerging including the need for regulation. There is a view in the literature that challenges the potential for ongoing self-regulation by the tourism industry—via instruments such as company-led environmental management systems and social responsibility initiatives and voluntary codes of conduct set up by companies or by association of companies (Ayuso 2007; Parsons & Woods-Ballard, 2003). The basis for this view is that self-regulation is by definition voluntary (Bramwell and Lane, 2010) and that industry’s behaviour can often revert to short-term self-interest at the cost of following environmental standards. The second issue is around the concept that “environmentally friendly tourism” is a niche market and not the main game, that it brings with it higher costs and a lower environmental footprint, and that there is a tension between tourism development and sustainable tourism. The third issue is a more positive, optimistic view that there are potentially market segments that are environmentally friendly as well as providing higher economic returns. These issues are explored via a theoretical focus.","PeriodicalId":38204,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainability Policy and Practice","volume":"22 1","pages":"11-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67537851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, while the potential trade-offs growth vs. environment and growth vs. intra-generational equity have been frequently addressed, the possible tensions between intra-generational and inter-generational equity have received only limited attention. This is true also for studies on “sustainable transport”, often concerned with the seemingly unstoppable rise of car ownership and use. This latter process is, on the one hand, a major determinant of environmental unsustainability; on the other hand, however, it entails a crucial intra-generational equity dimension, related to the differential in accessibility to services and opportunities between car users and non-car users. Accordingly, in this paper, I argue that the very nature of car dependence–defined as a dynamic and self-reinforcing macro-social process with systemic properties–urges scholars to focus on the trade-offs between intra- and inter-generational equity. Indeed, every increase in the level of car dependence widens the disadvantage gap between those who are part of the car system and those who are left out of it, but at the same time reduces the number of the latter. For this reason, its implications for intra-generational equity are very equivocal. On the other hand, most of the policies envisaged to fight car dependence are feared to have negative impacts on intra-generational equity, and thus often meet strong resistance. This is likely to bring to a “transport policy stalemate”, where no serious attempt is made to reduce car use and all hopes are concentrated on a “technological fix” to eventually solve all problems. In this scenario, inter-generational equity is likely to be sacrificed in favour of other goals.","PeriodicalId":38204,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Sustainability Policy and Practice","volume":"8 1","pages":"45-57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67536213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Peacebuilding theory establishes that sustainable peace can be reached through conflict transformation. Transformation of a conflict is different from ‘conflict management’ both in orientation and intent. Conflict management, a popular term in contemporary mining industry discourse, often seeks to suppress, contain or otherwise avoid the consequences of conflict. These goals are not necessarily possible, or productive, in an ongoing relationship between various parties who are concerned about issues related to the use and management of natural resources. Instead, a focus on conflict transformation acknowledges that conflict is fundamental to enduring relationships and that its energy can be harnessed for improved outcomes between parties.
