The study aimed at identifying the scaffolding strategies EFL instructors use in writing classrooms at Wollega University. Six EFL teachers were video recorded while teaching writing to first-year students in Communicative English Skills II. The video-recorded data were transcribed and analyzed using Open code project software. Interview data were also used to strengthen the teachers’ classroom activities. The data from the interview were analyzed through narration according to specific themes. The result indicates that the instructors use scaffolding strategies like a questioning, explanation, inviting learners, repeating students’ utterances, praising learners, giving instruction, recasting, directing students’ thinking, giving feedback, use of L1, and others. Contrary to the use of scaffolding strategies, the misuse of the strategies has to be given attention to enhance its usage.\u0000Keywords: Interaction; scaffolding; strategies; writing.","PeriodicalId":381886,"journal":{"name":"Global Journal of Foreign Language Teaching","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129646033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to suggest an ESP syllabus that is suitable for archaeologists. To reach this end a case study of Archaeology Master One students at the University of Tlemcen (Algeria) was undertaken. First, these students’ needs were identified and analyzed. Then, according to the findings, an appropriate syllabus with adequate tasks was suggested. To fulfill the first step of this research and analyze students’ needs, a student questionnaire and three structured interviews were used. The results revealed that in terms of learning needs, archaeology students were highly motivated towards learning English, yet they lacked self-confidence. Regarding the target needs, they needed the development of the four language skills. Thus, archaeology students required appropriate English language tasks to achieve communicative purposes. Accordingly, the English for Archaeology syllabus with appropriate tasks was suggested to answer students’ English language needs.\u0000Keywords: Archaeology; ESP; English; language skills; Syllabus design; teaching task.","PeriodicalId":381886,"journal":{"name":"Global Journal of Foreign Language Teaching","volume":"243 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116159566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New values and aspirations came to shape learners’ attitudes towards education, exemplified by slender engagement in classes. Algerian EFL students are a good case in point. This urged teachers to make strenuous efforts to create convenient learning environments. Regarding the course of Western civilization, they had to equip themselves with new skills. This paper aims to explore, through the specific experience of the author, the nature of the adjustments made, pending both approaches and educational strategies. To conduct this investigation, the researcher used both a self-assessment and a student questionnaire destined for first-year students. The findings indicate the possibility of creating student-centered classes through the use of different teaching techniques such as outline composition, text analysis, discussion sequences, and summary writing. On the education ground, decision-makers called for a switch from on-the-ground to online instruction as a remedy to this challenging issue. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate the primary challenges that English for Specific Purposes teachers and learners encounter in the Higher School of Management of Tlemcen, Algeria in E-learning classes, as well as the most effective ways and skills to cater to the needs of this global age during this pandemic era. This research is a case study conducted on 5 ESP teachers and 60 first-year learners. The data collection was through a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Howbeit, based on our experience/observation, the provision of the ways/processes the literary competence should be assessed seems to be scarce. The need to assess the foreign language learners' literary competence as a learning outcome is vital. Therefore, as a contribution to this area of study, the present study aims at assessing EFL students’ literary competence. To do so, twenty-five randomly selected third-year English students at the University of Tiaret participated in the study, and O’Brien’s On the Rainy River was used as a data tool to measure their literary competence. Given the skills that literary competence embraces, the findings of this research revealed that the participants of the EFL students at the University of Tiaret lacked some basic skills that are essential for literary competence. The findings of this study, based on an open-ended questionnaire and students’ reflection journals, show that PBL enhanced the students’ English language knowledge and skills. Also, students gained content knowledge about the environment, soft skills, autonomy, and self-confidence in using the English language in its context. The participants were 846 first-year undergraduate students who were learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in China. Students’ academic achievement was measured by a national standardized test for English competence (the College English Test). The results of path analysis showed that students’ perceptions of innovative instruction and task orientation were positive predictors of their academic achievement; students’ perceptions of equity predicted their academic achievement via perceptions of teacher-student relationships; students’ perceptions of peer relationships had an indirect effect on student achievement mediated by cooperative learning.
