An aspect crucial to managing such networks is the existence of a flexible and effective backhaul infrastructure. Since backhaul infrastructure is essential, it becomes important to analyze the cost of its implementation. This paper aims to realize a framework to estimate deployment costs in a network which consists of users, two types of base stations, and backhaul nodes that could either be microwave or fiber optic backhaul nodes. The main contribution of this work is the derivation of a framework using spatial point processes that helps estimate the cost of deploying a backhaul node based on the number of users and base stations connected to it. The framework, along with assumptions of typical costs of various network components, is utilized to examine whether there exist an optimal number of backhaul nodes that can minimize the overall deployment cost of a network while catering to a given number of users in the area.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128139337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a typical spectrum auction, Secondary Users (SUs) bid to buy spectrum bands from a Primary Owner (PO) who acts as the auctioneer. Existing spectrum auctions assume that SUs have static and known values for the channels. However, in many real world settings, SUs do not know the exact value of channel access at first, but they learn it over time. In this paper, we study spectrum auctions in a dynamic setting where SUs can change their valuations based on their experiences with the channel. We propose ADAPTIVE, a dynAmic inDex Auction for sPectrum sharing with TIme-evolving ValuEs that maximizes the social welfare of the SUs. ADAPTIVE is based on multi-armed bandit models where for each user an allocation index is independently calculated in polynomial time. ADAPTIVE has some desired economic properties that are formally proven in the analysis. Also, we provide a numerical performance comparison between ADAPTIVE and the well known Vickrey second price auction as a representative of static auctions.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130004646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the spatial stochastic models for which a computable expression of the coverage probability is available are restricted (such as the Poisson based or α-Ginibre based models). Furthermore, even if it is available, the practical numerical computation may be time-consuming (in the case of α-Ginibre based model). In this paper, we propose the application of Padé approximation to the coverage probability in the wireless network models based on general spatial stationary point processes. The required Maclaurin coefficients are expressed in terms of the moment measures of the point process, so that the approximants are expected to be available for a broader class of point processes. Through some numerical experiments for the cellular network model, we demonstrate that the Padé approximation is effectively applicable for evaluating the coverage probability.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134436649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that the source, the destination, and relay stations are all equipped with single antenna. The Doppler power spectral density, associated with each of the double Rice fading processes, is considered to be symmetrical about the carrier frequency. Under the above conditions, analytical integral expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the SC fading envelopes. Also, expressions for the level crossing rate (LCR) as well as the average duration of fades (ADF) are determined. For some cases, the integral expressions are shown to be approximated using the Laplace's method of integration. The approximations are verified to be accurate when the number of relay stations is large. The obtained results include those corresponding to the double Rayleigh and combined Rayleigh×Rice models as special cases of the double Rice fading channel. The validity of all the presented theoretical results are checked by computer simulations.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134140144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The database evaluates and provides to the WSD the local emission power. The common approach adopted in Europe to estimate such limits is expanded to the case of Single-Frequency-Network (SFN) planning of DTT networks. Also, the criterion for setting the allowable DTT quality degradation is discussed and a novel approach is proposed, based on local DTT quality. The complete procedure to evaluate WSD emission limits is applied to a real Italian DTT scenario. We compare different DTT planning strategies over the same set of transmitters and the same area, from the point of view of potential WSD presence. This comparison highlights the advantage of SFN planning both in terms of DTT coverage and allowed WSD emissions.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115112812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The synergy consists in the following: the SU opts to cooperate by using its own transmit power to improve the probability of successful transmission of the PU. By increasing the probability of successful packet transmission for the PU, the SU essentially increases the service rate of the PU queue and thus, for given packet arrival rate, it increases the chances that it will be empty, and the channel will be free to use. Due to power limitations however, SUs have to take intelligent decisions on whether to cooperate or not and at which power level. Cooperation policies in this framework require the solution of a constrained Markov decision problem with infinite state space. In our work, we restrict attention to the class of stationary policies that take randomized decisions of an SU activation and its transmit power in every time slot based only on spectrum sensing. The proposed class of policies is shown to achieve the same set of SU rates as the more general policies, while significantly enlarging the stability region of the PU queue. Finally, a lightweight distributed protocol based on the proposed class of policies is presented, which is amenable to implementation in realistic scenarios.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123537603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The users inside the train are served in two hops via the 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The objective of this work is to maximize the number of served users by respecting a specific quality-of-service constraint while minimizing the total power consumption of the eNodeB and the moving relays. We propose an efficient algorithm based on the Hungarian method to find the optimal resource allocation over the LTE resource blocks in order to serve the maximum number of users with the minimum power consumption. Moreover, we derive a closed-form expression for the power allocation problem. Our simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed scheme and compare it with various previously developed algorithms as well as with the direct transmission scenario.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115093511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Any transmission across a distance d incurs a cost c(d). We devise and study, both by analysis (using stochastic geometry tools) and simulation, forwarding rules that transport packets towards a given direction using combinations of wireless transmissions and physical transfers on node buffers. The forwarding rules are evaluated in terms of two metrics: the packet delivery delay and the aggregate transmission cost, both per unit of distance covered. We explore the tradeoff between these two metrics in terms of the points on the delay-cost plane achieved by our forwarding rules.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129093677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike conventional half-duplex (HD) MIMO, two wireless devices of a bidirectional FD-MIMO link have freedom of selecting which antennas/RF-chains to transmit or receive before tuning their radiation patterns to maximize the link's throughput. The freedom in configuring the function of available RF-chains, resulting in various FD-MIMO transmission modes, is referred to as FD-MIMO freedom that is shown to significantly improve the spectral efficiency of a given link. For a given RF-chain/antenna selection of a set of FD-MIMO links, we end up with a non-convex throughput maximization problem of a heterogeneous MIMO network. We design both centralized (using the augmented Lagrange function) and distributed algorithm (using a hierarchical game and pricing) to solve the problem for its locally optimal solutions. Comparing the achieved throughput of the FD-MIMO network, averaged over all obtained locally optimal solutions, with that when FD-MIMO nodes choose to operate in an HD mode, we find the HD mode surprisingly outperforms the FD mode. This trend is also observed when exploring all possible communication modes of a small size FD-MIMO network.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123816647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To make full advantage of CoMP, radio planning tools need very accurate models that fully capture the MIMO channels characteristics. This paper presents detailed modeling and analysis of an uplink CoMP system using Ray-Tracing (RT)-based channel modeling. The contribution of this paper is to show how close RT simulations can predict end-to-end system performance compared to the real-world measured performance. Thorough drive test measurements and RT simulations were performed. CoMP and Conventional MIMO systems performances are evaluated and compared for measured and RT-simulated channels. The results of several scenarios show that the RT matches the measurements in terms of rates and geometrical properties. The CoMP gain resulting from the measurements is almost double the gain of RT simulations. The differences come from the hardware and the RT 3D models impairments.","PeriodicalId":381489,"journal":{"name":"2014 12th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132225363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
