On the other hand, this matter lifts interesting aspects and technical problems from a measurements point of view as well. It is not always possible to perform these measurements using a human operator, because there are situations where the environmental monitoring asks for a too large number of measurements, or the area to be monitored can be dangerous. For this reason, a research activity has been undertaken in order to carry out a measurement system based on the employment of a fleet of robot that, endowed with proper sensors, can cooperate among them and with a central unit, with the purpose to autonomously perform the environmental monitoring of structured or not structured environment. In particular, this paper describes the part of the project that deals with the development of the magnetic sensors, that will be installed on navigation robots. A low-cost smart sensor has been developed for magnetic field measurement in the frequency range 10 Hz-10 kHz, able to perform both the isotropic flux density measurement and its harmonics analysis. The logic embedded in the sensor is also able to compare the measured quantities with the reference levels for human exposure in the frequency domain, as pointed out by International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).","PeriodicalId":381233,"journal":{"name":"ISA/IEEE Sensors for Industry Conference, 2004. The approach is based on a set of solid state chemical sensors (i.e. ISFETs/CHEMFETs), and a post-processing stage which performs the estimation of the ionic activities presented in the solution. This estimation is performed by a non-linear blind separation algorithm that uses some prior knowledge about how sensors simultaneously respond to several ionic activities. Additionally, the presented approach addresses some important problems of these sensors like temperature effects, cross sensitivity and drift; it also takes into account some hardware implementation constraints. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed architecture.","PeriodicalId":381233,"journal":{"name":"ISA/IEEE Sensors for Industry Conference, 2004. Regarding our support of a daily life, the construction of the human interface system that substitutes the movement means and the means of communication becomes an important problem. Regarding the human interface system, the system device that can be easily used for many bedridden people is needed. Hence, we will propose the electromyogram interface system that have finger-flexing motion and can be easily moved even in the state of bedridden. The prototype model is actually constructed with an electromyograph of the telemeter type and a computer. The finger-flexing motion is identified by the discrimination analysis method in the data analysis. In this report, the prototype system is actually produced In the system, the finger-flexing motion can be recognizes more than 90% on average. It means that the reproduction of the means of communication can be used by this technique.","PeriodicalId":381233,"journal":{"name":"ISA/IEEE Sensors for Industry Conference, 2004. The integration of the ubiquitous internet with embedded devices brings about a plethora of applications. A typical example being monitoring and control of sensors via a standard internet browser, which can be programmed to automatically generate e-mail alerts on the occurrence of special events. Many applications are in home automation, medical diagnosis, process control, security and surveillance systems, card readers, building controls and robotics, using internet browser from anywhere around the world. This paper describes in detail the implementation of a 16-bit embedded Web server based on a 16-bit micro controller and an Ethernet LAN controller. Many modern portable instruments are complex in their functionalities using multisensors and also can communicate with each other or other digital devices under stand alone operational modes. The progress in digital hardware, intelligent sensors, nano and microsensors, and software add remarkable features to these devices. As portable instruments get complex the efficient use of power and their power related reliability becomes a central issue. Power awareness and energy efficiency starts at the sensor level and builds up towards a much more complex system. This paper discusses power management and energy efficiency in portable instruments and gives examples on the energy efficient designs.","PeriodicalId":381233,"journal":{"name":"ISA/IEEE Sensors for Industry Conference, 2004.
