Currently, participation of UAE-based women in breast cancer screenings remains low, with women diagnosed at advanced stages, negatively impacting disease prognosis and survival rates. Early detection would enable more treatment options, improve the conditions of survivorship, and reduce the number of premature deaths. Health awareness campaigns and screening services need to address the barriers that are preventing women in the UAE from having early screenings and apply targeted methods of encouraging the participation of both Emirati and non-Emirati women. This policy paper explores women’s use of breast cancer screening practices and other women’s health services in the UAE, as well as the emirate’s ecosystem of awareness building and support impacting their behaviors. This includes the current encouragement and outreach strategies and campaigns being utilized, the knowledge levels of health professionals on breast screening practices, and how organizations and institutions provide patient education. Studies have shown that women’s health is a central feature of human development, as a mother’s health has intergenerational impact on the health and well-being of her children. Greater attention is needed to understand the interplay of biological and social determinants in women’s health to ensure that women are provided with comprehensive, quality healthcare tailored to their needs. This is especially true for women’s reproductive health, as women suffer from diseases that lead to lifelong pain, infertility, abnormal menstrual bleeding, and a lower quality of life. Enhancing and reframing the narrative around reproductive health should be an urgent priority to not only lead to effective preventative strategies and care, but also to empower women to lead their healthiest life possible. Cook","doi":"10.18502/aqf.0130","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18502/aqf.0130","url":null,"abstract":"Early childhood is a critical period in our social, cognitive, linguistic, emotional, and self-regulatory development, and extensive research has been conducted on children’s overall developmental processes, influencing factors, and their lifelong impacts. Research suggests the over-arching significance of supporting children’s early development through caregiver-child communication, social interactions, and play. Such interactions and opportunities for development in children’s early years are critical for later academic achievement and well-being. Moreover, the positive long-term effects of high-quality early childhood education (ECE), in particular on children’s development, as well as the economic, social, and cultural development of communities on a larger scale, have been extensively documented.\u0000In the Arab Gulf region, especially in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), little research has been done to document and analyze ECE quality, practices, and their impacts. This case study focuses on the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE, investigating the scope of programs and their quality, challenges, and opportunities for growth and improvement. The study found and documented extreme variations in the quality of early childhood education centers (ECECs) in the emirate and highlights the need to improve ECE policies, practices, and facilities by adopting recognized international standards, best practices, and support structures.
