School education has been one of the mediums used to teach non-nationals the UAE’s language, culture, and identity. However, how schools in the UAE implement these state-led national identity projects for non-nationals is yet to be studied. The paper closes this research gap and examines implementation strategies and challenges experienced by Indian curriculum schools across the UAE. The paper reveals how non-national students are absorbed into the UAE’s national identity discourses through the school curriculum, activities, and practices. Teaching and learning the Arabic language and limited social interactions with native Arabic speakers are significant challenges faced by Indian curriculum schools, which are comprised mainly of non-Emirati, non-Arab students. The paper recommends potential policies for relevant stakeholders to overcome these challenges and further integrate non-nationals into the UAE society.

Although this growth of non-state education has provided parents with a wide variety of schooling options in which they can enroll their children, obstacles to accessing equitable, quality education persist across the Gulf. This paper examines existing legislation and policies on nonstate education to examine their inclusivity, focusing particularly on dis/ability, socioeconomic status, and ethnic background. We begin by describing the education landscape in the Gulf states of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman. We then discuss the data and limitations before summarizing the challenges and offering some recommendations to policymakers moving forward.

Leaders at the Foundation, and its collaborators, have accomplished this through the production of relevant research and directly engaging with policymakers, educators, and students. The Foundation began working with students in 2013 after inheriting the Sheikh Saqr Overseas Scholarship Program. It provided supplemental scholarships to Ras Al Khaimah Emirati students studying overseas and had been running for several years when it transitioned. As part of its new scholarship management responsibilities, the Foundation was tasked with increasing the number of students enrolled at well-regarded overseas universities.

This rapid growth has had a major effect on issues of sound education provision, financing, and equity. While several studies have explored this regional trend of expansion in private education, in particular (Ridge et al., 2016b; Abdelkhalek & Langsten, 2019), few have attempted to discuss the extent to which nonstate education legislation addresses issues of equity and inclusion.\u0000\u0000As such, this report examines legislation and regulations for the nonstate education sector across MENA countries, focusing in particular on equity and inclusion. It attempts to do so by assessing whether laws and policies delineate limitations on fee-setting and profit-making, while further examining whether nonstate education legislation accounts for the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. It begins with a background discussion of the growth and categorization of nonstate education in the MENA region. Next, the methodology and typologies of nonstate education are outlined, before presenting the discussion section, challenges, and recommendations for policymakers.

One issue is that women have increasingly enrolled, studied, and achieved undergraduate and graduate degree success in the United Arab Emirates and the wider Middle East region (Blanc, 2016; Miller & Wai, 2015). However, despite the presence of these highly educated women in the labor force, their recruitment, retention, and promotion to middle and senior levels remains relatively low (Rong & Rounds, 2015). If these human resources are not managed effectively, then their talent is lost to an organization, their ability to support their families is decreased, the country loses their economic participation and human development status is reduced. In order to lower barriers to the recruitment and retention of women, more training opportunities and highlighting their achievements in the workplace are needed. We recommend an increase in organizational support through utilizing the multimedia resources at the Virtual Center for Women & Leadership (MENA)

This is likely due to the complexities of the Arabic alphabet and the differences between spoken and written Arabic. It is possible that these complexities make it difficult for the brain to learn to recognize Arabic letters and words in an automatic way. For educational as well as cultural reasons, improving reading ability is a priority in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries including the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A textbook intervention, developed by the Al Qasimi Foundation and Dr. Helen Abadzi, that enhances the visual characteristics of letters in Arabic was successful in improving reading fluency in children, but the impact of this intervention on the brain’s development is unknown. The data suggest that a single year of intervention reduced the cognitive effort needed for the brain to process Arabic print, though it did not accelerate the brain’s development of a reading specific network. When interpreting these data, it is important to note the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the intervention’s success and thus, its impact on brain development.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been implementing pioneering wellbeing agendas at the national and emirate levels for some years. However, these have barely been driven by local evidence, which remains almost nonexistent in the area of adolescent wellbeing. In the absence of local evidence, schools and other decision-makers are forced to rely on evidence from studies conducted in altogether different sociocultural contexts. Yet, the unique characteristics of the nation demand evidence-based policymaking approaches that are sensitive to local issues and the diverse socio-demographic profile of its population. The following policy paper supports this endeavor by analyzing data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 to provide the first detailed overview of levels and drivers of adolescents’ wellbeing in the UAE. This baseline assessment provides valuable insights that schools, education authorities, and other stakeholders can use to inform decisions on how to support adolescents’ wellbeing. This policy paper makes specific recommendations and calls for a change in the nation’s wellbeing policy approach to facilitate systematic data collection and analysis at the national, emirate, and school levels and ensure that the emerging evidence is used to drive positive change.

This study will examine women’s use of public space in Ras Al Khaimah. It aims at exploring the similarities and differences in women’s use of different public spaces. Two types of public spaces were chosen: educational and recreational. Schools were selected for the former and malls for the latter.\u0000Findings of this study suggest that targeted leadership skills program for women at Ras Al Khaimah should be introduced to promote more meaningful engagement in public spaces, and urban public spaces should be designed to meet women’s needs for accessibility and privacy. These findings indicate the necessity of investing in creating culturally responsive public spaces that can be used by women and girls.

Drawing on interview-based fieldwork in three provinces in the UAE, it identifies contrasting visions for the role of the private sector in the country. These conflicting visions create numerous challenges for the stakeholders involved, including private universities, who must balance multiple goals of regulators, shareholders, and students. The policy paper suggests that, as the UAE increasingly positions itself as an educational destination, meeting students’ diverse goals for their education needs to be a key consideration in policy reform.
