It is a technique used primarily as a diagnostic tool for various cardiac diseases. ECG provides necessary information on the electrophysiology and changes that may occur in the heart. Due to the increase in mortality rate associated with cardiac diseases worldwide despite recent technological advancement, early detection of these diseases is of paramount importance. This paper has proposed a robust ECG feature extraction technique suitable for mobile devices by extracting only 200 samples between R-R intervals as equivalent R-T interval using Pan Tompkins algorithm at preprocessing stage. The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) of R-T interval samples are calculated and the statistical parameters of wavelet coefficients such as mean, median, standard deviation, maximum, minimum, energy and entropy are used as a time-frequency domain feature. The proposed hybrid technique has been tested by classifying three ECG beats as normal, right bundle branch block (Rbbb) and paced beat using the signals from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Beth Israel Hospital (MIT-BIH) arrhythmia database and processed using Matlab 2013 environment. Classification has been performed using neural network backpropagation algorithm because of its simplicity. While equivalent R-T interval features gives average accuracy of 98.22%, the proposed hybrid method gives a promising result with average accuracy of 99.84% with reduced classifier computational complexity.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116602744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instantaneously, there has been surmounting advances in the implementation of assistive technologies known as Zero Effort Technologies (ZETs). The term `assistive technology' refers to 'any device or system that allows an individual to perform a task that they would otherwise be unable to do, or increases the ease and safety with which the task can be performed. These assistive technologies further provide new ways of offering innovative ICT solutions capable of addressing challenges facing MRAs. These challenges include among others, the long term monitoring of animal health. In this research, we propose to amalgamate the principle of WSNs and ZETs to create a WSN that can link responsible authorities, e.g. Agricultural Extension workers to their herd of Cattle to enhance animal monitoring as a method of ensuring proper animal husbandry. We investigate how best such a tool can be implemented and further provide thoughts and guidelines regarding future directions and current state of art overviews of the key ideas in the burgeoning field of WSNs and ZETs amalgamation to provide efficient monitoring tools. Cattle monitoring is the test case in this research. The cattle industry is an integral part of the global economy. The continued production of quality beef requires new and improved methods for long term monitoring of animal health. Additional benefits can be realized from monitoring technology, such as the ability to identify the presence of diseases early and thereby prevent their spread. Core to realize this benefit is an important element of health assessment which is the ability to monitor vital data such as core body temperature to determine animal health. This paper therefore presents an outline of the development of a WSN based cattle monitoring tool that can be applied and used as a ZET to monitor cattle health and movement. It reviews other cattle monitoring systems and the importance of employing WSN for monitoring cattle, core body temperature and location in the ranches along with their advantages and disadvantages.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133697462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the markets grow, most providers are implementing different service offerings based on consumers' demand. One major challenge which has not been fully discussed in these markets is the performance impact of these offerings on consumers'. The goal of this research is to model a typical cloud marketplace and evaluate the performance impact on consumers' waiting time. To address this, we model a typical Cloud under a non-preemptive multi class discipline using Queuing theory to formulate our mathematical model and then use discrete event simulator to demonstrate a real scenario. Our evaluation was based on Non preemptive priority and non-priority discipline. Our results reveal that the unconditional average waiting time remains the same but we recorded a reduction delay which is especially profitable due to the less time in the non preemptive priority over the non priority model in four out of the five classes observed. Therefore, if the overriding requirement in the Cloud design is the reduction of the delay in some classes, then these classes should be given priority.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133753013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While prior research has focused on such issues in the developed West, very little is known about workers' perceptions of ES acceptance or adoption in the developing world. This study was designed to add to the growing body of work in the area by using empirical data collected in Nigeria. We employed symbolic acceptance to enrich insight instead of usage adoption, which is commonly used in the literature. We drew from relevant theoretical frameworks in developing the research model, which was tested with data collected from a survey. Using the partial least square technique (PLS) for data analysis, support was found for the five hypotheses formulated herein. Namely, performance and effort expectancies, social influence, facilitating conditions, and attitude toward ES were found to have significant, positive impacts on ES symbolic acceptance. The implications of the study findings for both research and practice are discussed, and conclusions are drawn.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"529 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124263018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increasing popularity of WMNs has prompted the development of security mechanisms. The newly-ratified IEEE 802.11s mesh networking standard specifies a security mechanism that builds upon the IEEE 802.11i security standard meant for wireless local area networks. The IEEE 802.11s security mechanism specifies the existence of a single Mesh key Distributor (MKD) which helps to authenticate new nodes that join the network However, there is no mechanism for selecting a new MKD if the current MKD is unreachable or has failed. This scenario can arise due to the dynamic nature of WMN backbone topologies, wireless link variability in deployed networks and battery depletion in battery-powered WMNs. MKD selection in a disperse settlement where WMN infrastructure could be deployed can be performed by adapting the position-based Leader Selection Algorithms from Wireless Sensor Networks. This paper evaluates the influence of distance and event position-based leader selection algorithms on MKD selection when subjected to different rounds and network sizes. The evaluation showed that the event-based algorithms (EDC & EECED) outperform the distance-based algorithms (EDBCP & EDBC) in the achieved performance for communication overhead cost, leader selection delay and the energy consumption rate.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124924163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The a priory knowledge of Radio Frequency (RF) power (primary signals and/ or interfering signals plus noise) in the channels to be exploited by CR is of paramount importance. This will enable the selection of channel with less noise among idle (free) channels. Computational Intelligence (CI) techniques can be applied to these scenarios to predict the required RF power in the available channels to achieve optimum Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper, we developed a time domain based optimized Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model for the prediction of real world RF power within the GSM 900, Very High Frequency (VHF) and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) TV bands. The application of the models produced was found to increase the robustness of CR applications, specifically where the CR had no prior knowledge of the RF power related parameters such as signal to noise ratio, bandwidth and bit error rate. The models used, implemented a novel and innovative initial weight optimization of the ANN's through the use of differential evolutionary and swarm intelligence algorithms. This was found to enhance the accuracy and generalization of the ANN model. For this problem, DE/best/1/bin was found to yield a better performance as compared with the other algorithms implemented.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117122140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
