Despite the many benefits that cloud computing offer, many businesses are still skeptical about how privacy is handled in the cloud. This owes to the fact that with cloud computing, the storage and processing of private information are done on remote machines that are not owned or even managed by the customers. All that the customer can see is a virtual infrastructure built on top of possibly non-trusted physical hardware or operating environments. There is a need for technical mechanism to address users' privacy concerns in order to allow for broader adoption of the cloud. In this paper, we present a Privacy Monitoring Framework to help cloud customers comprehend with what happens to their data while stored in the cloud. The framework provides mechanism which enables cloud customers to trace in detail what happens to their data, where it is stored and who accesses it.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128979368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the power dependency of Information Communication Technology (ICT), the unreliable power supply which upon the ICTD infrastructure currently runs on is set to provide challenges if not addressed. Over the years, various ICT infrastructure installed in the SLL has been destroyed and communication compromised due to power outages. With problems of some parts of South Africa being off-grid, poorly supplied and serviced due to their geography, or under load-shedding, there is need to exploit other energy sources. This power problem has coincided with the advent of renewable and clean energy and environmentally aware computing and engineering. Such a coincident pushes for the research in optimizing locally available renewable energy sources such as wind and solar which when combined form Hybrid Energy Systems (HES). HES have been widely used as of late but still lack the financial and environmental constraint optimization capability to achieve their maximum potential. This paper therefore proposes Genetic Algorithms (GA) applied to HES for the optimal utilization and mix of the power sources for both economic and environmental dispatch to suit the low cost and minimal adverse health issues in rural South Africa.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116763764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, education in Africa and specifically Nigeria still faces a 21st Century challenge in making education available and accessible to all. As a means of responding adequately to this huge unmet demand for education in Nigeria, this paper proposes a Synchronous Learning System which could be used in Nigerian Universities as a way of alleviating challenges like overcrowded classrooms and lack of adequate human resources. It presents a functional framework to exemplify services which could be offered in the proposed virtual learning system to depict the peculiarity of an instructor-led classroom within the Nigerian academic context, an operational design which describes how a custom e-learning portal could be integrated with an Open source Video Conference server to facilitate learning in virtual classrooms. Furthermore, it proposes a virtual Learning Network architecture to show how both onsite and remote students could optimize quality network access in realizing these electronic learning services.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127444157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MVDR supported by joint approximate diagonalization of eigenmatrices (JADE) algorithm is used to estimate the direction of arrivals of coherent signals in non-coherent groups. The generalized steering vectors using JADE algorithm are first estimated, and then the spectrum methods are realized to estimate the DOA of each signal. Root mean square error (RMSE) values are computed in different scenarios for the proposed method as well as JADE-MUSIC and the corresponding results are compared. Although both methods resolved the signals correctly, simulation results show that JADE based MVDR has better performances in the cases of low number of antenna elements and snapshots. The DOAs obtained are then processed using LMS adaptive beamforming algorithm to steer the main lobe of the radiation pattern to desired angles (signals) and the nulls to undesired angles (signals). The simulation results also reveal that adaptive beamforming is successfully done by annihilating the effects of undesired signals significantly.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126167763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The accuracy of the shape features extraction process increases the object recognition rate. Minimum Bounding Rectangle (MBR) is a tool that contributes to the increase of the accuracy of the shape features extraction, particularly it can be used to determine the real aspect ratio. This paper focuses on the improvement of the existing method. This is focused around the determination of the MBR's edges points, using a series of approximations. The proposed method gives more accurate MBR in all the tested situations. In order to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, an experiment is setup based on the comparison of the manually drawn MBR and the ones generated by each of the methods. Results achieved showed that the proposed method outperforms existing method as it consistently produced results closest to the manually drawn MBR.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130277454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm for deducing the encoded information from the hybridized modulations is described as well. This scheme is simulated and its performance is compared with a recently reported differential quinary PSK-OFDM system in the literature, whose behaviour has been shown to be better than the conventional permutation coded D8PSK-OFDM scheme at lower signal power to noise spectral density. Due to the simplicity in its encoding and decoding algorithms, this scheme is a good candidate for a number of low speed telemetry signaling in smart grids.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128087734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growth of power Networks and the number of elements which constitutes them has tremendously increased. This has created the need for an increased capacity and diligence in the sustenance of power systems in such countries. The adoption of a holistic approach in the management and planning of power systems cannot be over emphasized. This brings about the need for system maintenance management that encompasses; planning, monitoring and appraisal of maintenance activities in order to sustain growth and productivity. The work highlights due diligence and standard maintenance practices applied in other developed countries where efficiency is recorded. In spite of the fact that no artificial intelligence system is capable of fully simulating human behaviour, there are aspects which have been successfully mimicked. One of these applications is the development of intelligent systems to model the human sense of smell. The artificial neural network is one tool which makes inferences based on pattern recognition of selected parameters in their environment. This paper applies the neural network to the determination of food age using ammonia concentration as the major metric. The resulting algorithm is capable of determining age of common food types (in days) using supervised learning to obtain the knowledge inference database. A two process-layer neural network topology was observed to provide most accurate results with overall accuracy of 95 percent.
