Such programs usually involve the use of a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) to achieve load control under certain constraints. In light of recent on-going transition efforts and the drive towards modern grid infrastructure in several sub-Saharan electricity markets such as in Nigeria, it is imperative that a HEMS which is suitably adapted for the Nigerian consumer be developed. In this paper, one such HEMS which utilizes load control algorithms which are based on consumer preference and constraints is proposed. A consumer assigns each load priority values at different times of the day and different load control scenarios were considered. Load control under dynamic pricing environments, as well as constraints involving demand and cost was particularly simulated using MATLAB. Results confirm that significant cost and energy savings can be achieved due to reduction in total energy cost and load of the system.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131449074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we represent the performance of a computational cluster as a regression model that can be used to fine-tune the selection of suitable cluster resources. A study on the performance of distributed systems with respect to particular variations in parameters is presented. Our objective is to use a measurement-based evaluation technique to characterize the specific performance contribution of the individual cluster resource configurations. In the process we identify the key primary parameters (or factors) that should be considered when selecting and allocating a computational node for user application execution.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124398538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a framework for service offerings in a dynamic cloud network, based on software defined networking principles. The proposed approach also facilitates the use of multi-tenancy applications by providing redundant, vendor agnostic zone controllers with a hierarchical network manager. This approach enhances network security and supports converged Fibre Channel over Ethernet storage. Experimental implementation is demonstrated in a multi-tenant cloud test bed using a hybrid environment including both KVM and VMWare components.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116291517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The role of ICT for human development has been acknowledged and emphasized globally by entities such as the United Nations - through the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Consequently a lot of ICT based services have been developed, in particular within the context of ICT for Development (ICTD) to facilitate socio-economic development of marginalized communities. However, the information embedded in technology is useless if there are limitations in accessing this information. These limitations are typically and largely due to the poor and low usability of these services, hence the efforts to explore user experience (UX) with ICTs to ensure usability of products and services. This research is premised on the idea that increased usability of ICTD services would improve the effectiveness of these efforts for the benefit of the plethora of marginalized communities. To that end, this paper initially undertakes a persona profiling to determine the key characteristics of the user communities, clustered according to the key UX attributes. Subsequently the paper carries out a detailed usability evaluation, using System Usability Scale (SUS) to determine the usability of various UI components/techniques per identified persona.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"11 17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123692355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The work takes a new perspective called the Geo-spatial approach in quantifying the available TVWS. Spectrum sharing model was developed from the protection viewpoint where the secondary users (SUs) are only allowed to reuse the spectrum outside the keep-out distance from the broadcast transmission grade B contour of the primary users. The spatial data used include the administrative map of Nigeria showing the states' boundary delineation and parameters for all the TV transmitters, including their coordinates. The broadcast range of transmission and protection contour of each UHF transmitter in Nigeria was obtained using the developed models. To show the broadcast range, the transmitter position, represented by a point, was subjected to GIS Buffering operation using the Analysis Tools extension within the ArcGIS ArcToolbox. Results obtained show that the proposed method recovers more white spaces when compared with the traditional command-and-control spectrum model. The work also provides the channel occupancy distribution of Nigeria, United Kingdom and the USA for the purpose of comparison.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123170761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper developed a liquid dispenser leveraging microcontroller technology with added features that eliminates manual operation of the dispenser's pumps. This is achieved by the use of cup sensor in the control unit that automatically detects the presence of cups or other container. It also solve the issue of overflow of fluid due to loss of concentration by the introduction of electronic keypad which enables the users to input their desired quantity. The system code implementation was implemented with Assembly language via a notepad editor saved as .asm file. The saved file was compiled with an assembler (MIDI - 51) which generated three files; hex file, obj file and list file. The hex file was used for the simulation of the design in Proteus 7.7 professional and burning of the microcontroller for construction. The outcome at the end of the specified design period was a working prototype that was able to dispense a liquid if the user activates the button from the keypad. The results shows that cup sensor carries out its sensing functionality satisfactorily.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127006920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Until recently, many solutions were inclined on protecting data-at-rest through encryption. However, the past decade has seen an increase in data breaches that target encrypted sensitive information like credit cards, passwords and health records. A new approach to solving this problem thrives to minimize the storage of sensitive data in processing environments. This paper presents a privacy-as-a-service mechanism which makes use of the tokenization technology. It proposes the use of a tokenization service that can be used by applications to store sensitive data away from the processing environment. We show how the tokenization service can be useful for applications such as e-commerce and e-health where privacy is a major concern.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127077817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach applied in the study is based on the creation of a precedent-oriented Experience Base the units of which are built by designers when they conceptually solve the project tasks. The specificity of way-of-working used by designers is a reflection of operational space (processes, people and products) on specialized question-answer memory (QA-memory). QA-memory with its cells is intended for registering the conceptual content of reflected units with taking into account the semantics of their textual descriptions. Reflections open the possibility for conceptual experimenting with units of designers' behavior in the instrumental environment based on question-answering. Realization of the approach promotes increasing the successfulness of designing.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"58 17","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114000131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If not taken care of, this leads to additional cost of incurring higher peaker plants to meet the peak demand, and the burden of the cost of peaker plants are consequentially transferred to the consumers. Since this load is generated by the consumers, it is most desirable to control the peak demand from the consumers' side. Therefore, a method of Time Programmable Smart Devices (TPSD) with an efficient Electricity Use Plan (EUP) is proposed in this paper by introducing appliance working knowledge and improving load shifting technique of Demand Side Management for peak demand reduction in a rural Microgrid. This method yielded lower morning and evening peaks, a lower peak-to-peak difference than those available in literature, and a peak period shift from the traditional peak period to traditional off-peak period. These lead to financial savings, reduced cost of peaker plants and a safer environment from less greenhouse gases emissions.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"436 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122882109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years, the effects of its growth have permeated virtually every space and sector; its pervasiveness, offering voice, data, SMS capabilities, as essential driver of effective communication, corporate goals, and economic growth, cannot be overemphasized. Unfortunately, attackers have been leveraging on this technology to perpetrate different infringements, and even crimes, including identity theft and spamming. While several techniques for mitigating spamming have been proposed, much research has not been focused on preventing identity theft through bulk messaging. In this paper we propose an integrated system that filters message destinations based on message header and sender's registered platform mapping, and customer preference and message type/header mapping to mitigate identity theft and spamming through bulk messaging respectively.","PeriodicalId":380601,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science & Technology (ICAST)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123884263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
