This chapter also proposes being a student-ready educator takes a commitment to examine ourselves, our values, beliefs, and attitudes, and how they play out in our service to students. With this in mind, the authors recommend essential characteristics for being a student-ready educator, which includes (1) self-reflection, (2) empathy and compassion, (3) authenticity, (4) gratitude, (5) advocacy, and (6) personal sense of belonging. This chapter will expand on these characteristics and ways to skillfully engage them in meeting the needs of students from diverse backgrounds in these contested times to become more effective student-ready educators.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131564658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, this chapter provides theoretical and practical considerations for including men in efforts to combat destructive and violent behavior on college campuses. Rather than approaching these students solely from a perspective of hegemonic masculinity and patriarchal gender norms, college and university leaders can invite men to be positive change agents on campus by leveraging a theoretical framework that positions college men as active contributors to a safe and affirming campus community. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for college and university leaders who want to implement productive masculinity on their campuses.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125670621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors position the understanding of their experience as partly shaped by what they have learned or come to understand about their identities. They do this through the use of testimonio. As a result of these testimonies, they identify two areas of connections in their experiences as practitioners of color. These include preserving their energy and fear's impact on voice. Based on these connections, they conclude by sharing their experiential knowledge with other practitioners who share in their plight.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133916618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The similarities with grief, trauma, and the civil unrest triggered in the United States often become the forgot about demographic. As educators, providing a safe space for students to engage in topics that might historically be uncomfortable will be extremely critical. The D.I.V.E. method is also illustrated as a great foundation for educators to start figuring out a way to connect with all students. There is a privilege of power that is naturally given to educators, and this chapter highlights a critical way that power can be used to privilege students who might otherwise go unseen.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121561688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While they can save time and energy, they can also create division and exclusion. This chapter employs a phenomenological approach to examine the role of socialization on the author's identity development as well as the ways these experiences inform their efforts to advance justice in the field of higher education and beyond. Lessons learned are summarized as the author reframes earlier messages to share three better-not-best practices for readers to consider: racial determination, language, and humility. The chapter concludes with a personal reflection from the author about how the material is relevant to the current state of higher education.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114329438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lurie College of Education at San José State University in California. They ground their work in an emancipatory education framework that recognizes the histories of inequity, racism, and white supremacy in higher education and centers the voices and experiences of those who have historically been marginalized. Arguing that emancipatory work must move from words to actions, the authors reflect on moments of decision and leadership choices that have moved the culture and norms in the college and refocused the work to consistently prioritize equity in the college's policies and practices.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129889909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intersections of college student government and social justice are necessary to explore in order for senior administrators to share responsibility with and for students. Issues of social justice are being taken up on college campuses across the United States. It is common for student governments to legislate and engage with local, state, and even inter/national issues. The political nature of higher education has enabled and almost forced student governments to take up a wide array of concerns, leaving campus administrators—and students—to look for cues as to where to spend (limited) time, energy, and resources. This chapter illuminates a range of politics and current events, factors associated with institutional and individual influence(s), and final recommendations for higher education practice.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134173012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anger and Thirst for Change Among Students With Disabilities in Higher Education 高等教育中残疾学生对改变的愤怒与渴望

Inclusion still mostly amounts to retrofitting and the provision of accommodations. This leads to a degree of stigmatization, and rarely leads to a genuine metamorphosis of the higher education classroom, or the transformation of pedagogy. The result is a tangible tension between the expectations of students with disabilities and institutional culture. The chapter examines the power of the current discourse of students with disabilities and their thirst for change. It then seeks to explore how this discourse can be translated into action, and more particularly how the social model of disability can be integrated into higher education. Universal design for learning appears as a promising framework to translate this activism into tangible change. The chapter develops this reflection beyond pedagogy itself and considers how a framework such as UDL can support a radical transformation of leadership.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122128960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The epistolary style lends itself to a narrative conversation that can transcend time and identity, reflecting nearly three decades of professional experience. The letters speak to not only the author's former and much younger self, but to a generation of emerging higher education professionals who can draw upon these experiences to further their own work in educational equity. The letters are a way to both convey lessons learned and to provide perspective on the importance of authentic and substantive engagement in social justice now and in the future. Topics discussed include finding voice, framing/reframing views on culturally conscious leadership, and reimagining leadership. The chapter concludes with recommendations for emerging leaders on how to make meaningful and sustained impact on social justice and equity.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126711842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theme of the work is a commitment to fostering a personal journey and in connection fostering relationships with others. Fostering connection and relationships creates a thriving inclusive support network that extends far beyond the classrooms and student centers, and into other important spaces where non-instructional staff, faculty, and administration can effectively support and mentor our students. What may not have been intentional but was an effective component in the success of these workshops was the collaboration between the authors as staff and faculty coming together to create and present these culturally based mentorship workshops.","PeriodicalId":380564,"journal":{"name":"Handbook of Research on Leading Higher Education Transformation With Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122911144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
