{"title":"Assessing Positive Posttraumatic Changes Among Professionals Working With Trauma Victims: The Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory","authors":"N. Ogińska-Bulik, Z. As a rule, research focuses on the negative consequences of secondary trauma. Meanwhile, there are also positive changes in the form of Secondary Posttraumatic Growth (SPTG). The present study describes the design and testing of a new tool for measuring SPTG. Thirty items were presented to employees from five different professions constantly working with trauma victims (N = 580). A 4-factor solution (PCA) turned out to be clear and unambiguously interpretable. After excluding items based on their component loading and redundancy, the tool was pared down to 12 items. A separate sample used in confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) yielded good fit indexes. The four dimensions were given the following designations: 1. New challenges and an increase in professional competences, 2. Increase in spiritual experiences and a greater sense of responsibility for others, 3. Greater confidence in oneself and appreciating life, 4. Increased acceptance and actions for others. Cronbach’s alpha was .90. The inventory demonstrated high stability, as indicated by the two-month test–retest stability value (.78). The theoretical validity was estimated by comparing SPTGI scores with other measures which should be associated with secondary positive changes. The SPTGI is a new, reliable, and valid instrument for measuring positive posttraumatic changes among professionals exposed to secondary trauma. {"title":"On the Peripheries of Contemporary Paintings: Impact of Frame Decorativeness on the Reception of Abstract Artwork","authors":"Paweł Koniak, Magdalena Szubielska","doi":"10.18290/rpsych2022.0007","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18290/rpsych2022.0007","url":null,"abstract":"By applying persuasion and consumer research findings to art appreciation we have checked whether and how artwork framing affects the evaluation of non-representational, abstract contemporary paintings. The frame can be treated as a cue signaling the value of the framed work—the more expensive it seems, the greater the value attached to the painting. However, the frame can be also seen as a means of exhibiting or promoting the picture. Exhibiting a painting in a frame that is perceived as excessively expensive can lead to a lowered rating of this painting. Both of these effects can be moderated by the perceivers’ interest in art. We conducted one experimental study, where participants evaluated paintings viewed either without a frame or framed in a simple or decorative frame. The results showed that decorative frames make paintings seem less valuable. Moreover, although simple frames do not affect the evaluation of the paintings by respondents with little interest in art, they impair the evaluation made by more interested participants. It seems that in certain conditions (highly visible frame or engaged perceivers) the frame can be treated as a form of promotion for the framed painting. {"title":"Basic Dimensions of Religiousness and Dispositional Forgiveness: The Mediating Role of Religiously Motivated Forgiveness","authors":"M. Although numerous studies have confirmed the hypothesis that religious people tend to be more forgiving, there is still an open question as to which dimensions of religiosity are responsible for this tendency and whether religious people equally tend to forgive others, but also themselves, and feel being forgiven by God. The present study investigated the associations between religiosity and dispositional forgiveness using the basic dimensions of religiousness model (including cognitive, emotional, moral, and social dimensions of religiosity) and multifaceted measurement of forgiveness (self-forgiveness, forgiveness of others, divine forgiveness, and religiously motivated forgiveness). The study involved 427 individuals who identified themselves as religious (71% women). The results showed weak positive correlations between dimensions of religiousness and dispositional selfforgiveness, moderate associations with dispositional forgiveness of others and religiously motivated forgiveness, and strong associations with dispositional divine forgiveness. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that when controlled for covariations between dimensions of religiousness and dimensions of forgiveness, the behaving (morality) dimension of forgiveness predicted dispositional forgiveness of others and divine forgiveness. One of his most significant achievements was the initiation of the Perception and Cognition Lab at KUL, where experimental neurophysiological and behavioural research has been conducted in various areas of cognitive psychology. These basic and applied studies are currently continued by the Professor’s associates. The current special issue contains articles on diverse topics in which the authors—his collaborators and friends—adopt various theoretical perspectives and apply distinctive paradigms. Two eye movement parameters: fixation duration average and scan path length, estimated based on data recorded during viewing paintings, were analyzed. The extent to which the parameters of eye movement while performing different instructions predict the same parameters during the aesthetic assessment task was investigated. It was assumed that similar parameters of eye movements are indicators of similar mental processes, activated under different instructions. The viewing time window and expertise of participants were independent variables. Data were analyzed by multilevel modeling. The results showed that at the early stage of viewing a painting, instructions that activate emotional processing (regardless of expertise), better predict the aesthetic evaluation of a painting than instructions activating cognitive processes. At this stage, it was also found that the eye movement parameters, during the performance of instructions that activate cognitive processing, better predict the aesthetic evaluation of paintings only in the group trained in visual arts. At the later stage of viewing paintings, instructions activating cognitive processes turned out to be more reliable predictors of eye movement parameters during the aesthetic evaluation task than instructions activating emotional processes in both groups of participants. {"title":"Film Preferences in the Pandemic: Psychological Resilience or an Escape from the Pandemic Reality?","authors":"J. We wanted to verify whether “stay at home” recommendations influenced viewers’ preferences concerning films, their watching habits, motivation to choose a specific film and how media use is related to some psychological variables, mainly a sense of loneliness, self-esteem and pandemic psychological resilience. Results of the online survey showed that participants watch more films or series during the pandemic than before and that they prefer various genres. They more often use streaming platforms and go to the cinema less frequently compared to the period before the pandemic. Participants watch films more for both entertainment and as a way to get away from everyday reality than before. Cast, film topic and recommendations became less important when choosing a film. There was also found a weak, however significant correlation between describing oneself as a fan of a specific film genre and the pandemic psychological resilience. Results show that the pandemic psychological resilience is moderately, negatively related to loneliness. Towards a neurocognitive theory of image (Francuz, 2013) defines art perception as a synthesis between acts of perception and visual imagination limited by attentional constraints. The majority of empirical evidence the author referred to in the book focuses on visual processing, attention, and aesthetic judgements. Nevertheless, other mechanisms involved in the subjective experience formation undoubtedly also plays a role in the perception of art. Thus, it seems worth complementing the fundaments of the neurocognitive theory of image with consciousness literature. The research in this domain often reminds us that we see much more than is presented. Our conscious perception is modified, extended, and enriched due to multiple mechanisms, such as prediction, integration, or learning. Here, I review selected examples of work from the consciousness literature to illustrate this claim. Furthermore, I discuss this work in the context of art perception. The mechanisms underlying the co-existence of disabilities related to reading and writing on the one hand and motor skills on the other hand, still need to be clarified. In the current study it was hypothesised that the level of intelligence may contribute to complex motor skills in dyslexia. The study involved 58 students with developmental dyslexia (age 9.08 yrs; SD = .06) and 50 students constituting a control group (age 9.09 yrs; SD = .06). The measurements were performed using WISC-R, two subtests from the Dyslexia 3 Test, and four complex motor tasks. Children with dyslexia present problems in complex motor tasks, which involved learning of movement sequences and mental rotation. This finding may support the cerebellar deficit hypothesis in dyslexia. Complex motor skills are significantly related to children’s intelligence level or to the interaction of intelligence and dyslexia. Recent studies indicate that being aware of developing the story about the self that brings cohesion and meaning may be adaptive. This paper presents preliminary findings across three studies (two quantitative and one mixed methods) aimed at exploring the phenomenon of awareness of narrative identity in terms of its relations to other aspects of narrative identity and meaning-making (meaning in life, self-esteem, and post-traumatic growth). The total number of participants in all studies was 840 (N1 = 254; N2 = 424; N3 = 162). Results indicate that stronger awareness of narrative identity is related to higher self-narrative inclination and reflexivity, and may be adaptive in terms of meaning-making and coping with traumatic events. People that were more aware of a narrative identity produced more elaborated and coherent self-narrations about an important past relationship. What is more, they had a stronger tendency to integrate these past experiences with a sense of self identity. Surprisingly, awareness of narrative identity was not related to self-esteem. These findings have been discussed referring in terms of narrative identity literature. Extremely vivid imagery, or hyperphantasia, is at the other end of the spectrum of individual differences. While most research has focused on visual imagery in this paper I argue that from a neuropsychological perspective this phenomenon is much more widespread, and should be categorized as imagery sensory agnosia. After over twenty years of learning to play music phenomenology of auditory imagery agnosia is described from the first-person perspective. Reflections on other forms of imagery agnosia and deficits of autobiographical memories are presented and a hypothesis about putative brain processes that can account for such phenomena is discussed.
