One such regency (region) that has strategic value is Sambas. Sambas regency has two types of “strategic areas”, namely border areas and tourism strategic areas. This paper is a case study on the Sambas regency in West Kalimantan. The study was undertaken at Paloh district (representative of border areas), and Sambas district (representative of tourism areas, besides being the capital city of Sambas regency). This paper attempts to explore and examine one of the “urban network” types, which is a technical/infrastructure network, to assess the orientation tendency within the network concept. It examines some network measurements to explore the area’s position by using degree/density, closeness, centrality, cluster, and structural equivalence. The findings indicate that most of the infrastructure network in Sambas regency is still centralized and oriented towards Sambas district and some easy access areas, in line with its being the province’s capital city (southern part). Regarding the border area (Paloh), overall the linked networks are still limited due to the development priorities and considering the available access and distance problem. To boost development in the border area, interaction should be enhanced, by considering the role of each area and strengthening their connection through modifying the network.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73255503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accordingly, an extensive literature review was conducted by the current research, followed by (Isa, Kamaruzzaman, Mohamed, & Berawi, 2017) a preliminary survey that was aimed to confirm the FM functions obtained from the literature review phase. In the case of the present study, the preliminary survey or semi-structured interviews were carried out with a total of six experts due to their ability to confirm the factors. Meanwhile, descriptive statistics and content validity index (CVI) were adopted in the present study as the means of analysing the response data. In addition, a total of fifty items that belong to seven latent constructs managed to be developed from the literature review. More importantly, the results of the content validity analysis showed that the item-CVI values for six of the items were less than the cut-off value of 0.78 which was accompanied with a change of 50 to 44 items. Overall, it should be noted that the contribution of the current research is in the form of support to professionals and academicians which is believed to enhance their understanding on the importance of FM involvement in the VM process.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83535530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, poor daylight condition inside office buildings can occur due to improper positioning of window blinds by the occupants. Previous studies have shown that fully lowered window blinds and the use of the artificial lightings during daytime have caused many office buildings in Malaysia to have high rates of electricity consumption. Yet, the operation of window blinds is rarely considered during the calculation of building’s daylight performance in the tropics. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the frequency of window blind operations by office occupants and the driving factors behind their window blind operations. A GBI Gold-certified office building was selected for the study. The specific objectives of this paper are, 1) to find out the correlation between window blind operations with different orientations of the building, sky conditions, time and floor levels; and 2) to gauge the occupants’ views on their window blind operations and also their satisfaction level with their visual working environment. This study used time-lapse photography to record the blinds positions and a questionnaire survey among the occupants. Results of the ANOVA and Pearson Correlation tests from the photographic analysis found a strong correlation between window blind occlusion values with the building orientations and floor levels, but not with time. The survey results revealed that most of the participants seldom adjusted their window blinds and, in most cases, excessive brightness or glare was the main issue. These results indicate that the occupants make a little effort in changing their blind positions, which may lead to a poor daylight condition. It is expected that the results of this study will serve as the initial steps in considering occupants’ behaviour in window blinds usage during the calculation process of a building’s daylight performance in order to ensure a better indoor visual environment.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79131866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a case study of Kukup water village in Malaysia, this study seeks to understand the influence of coastal risks and hazards on coastal settlements’ spatial development, local construction measures for the adaptation of the coastal environment, and the implication of local adaptive measures on environmental policy and coastal management. The study used historical records and qualitative semi-structured interviews for data collection, and presented the spatial development and construction measures using an open-access 3D modelling tool, “SketchUp”. The study finds that natural, socioeconomic and cultural factors have contributed to the adjustment of spatial arrangement and that local adaptive measures reflect the local perception of coastal risks and hazards. More research is needed to understand the effects of cultural factors on adaptive capacity and how cultural aspects of adaptation can contribute to the improvement of adaptive capacity that is sensitive to different social context.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83937408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a systematic approach to reduce automotive dependency by facilitating increased accessibility to diverse destinations within walking distance. Indonesia has recently adopted this development approach. This paper is intended to provide academic insight into the current Indonesian implementation of TOD. A comparative model is created based on benchmark studies and research on current TOD principles and theories. Based on a comparative analysis between the model and current developments, Indonesian TOD can benefit from further development area and arrangement adjustment to conform to TOD design planning principles.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73783318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mouldy faA§ade can emerge within a few days due to heavy rain and a room can easily become hot and musty. These are among the major issues caused by improper ventilation. To overcome these problems, ventilation block, an ingenious building element that has a long history, is widely used in tropical countries. It provides comfort through cross ventilation, permitting daylight and offering protection from heavy rainfall and, giving aesthetic value. This paper is part of the main research on the findings of passive design elements in Malaysia schools buildings. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate, identify and discuss on the types, the design features and the characteristics of the ventilation blocks found on the existing primary school buildings in Kuala Lumpur territory, Malaysia. A total of 85 from a list of 201 schools were visited and observation was made. The schools were selected and categorised according to the years they were founded and based on the findings of their architectural design influences. It was found that there were at least 10 different ventilation block designs among the schools sampled in the present study which were built between the 1950s and 1960s. This element can be found in various locations of the buildings. Nevertheless, the purpose of such element was clearly to provide good ventilation and comfort to the occupants. Combining architecture and cross ventilation as a design feature has led to the implication of using ventilation block may not only solve the problems identified but also add value to the building and a present a convincing strategy towards sustainable design approach.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84245584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is parallel to regional resolution and convention reiterating accessible tourism in the industry whilst achieve ‘Inclusive, barrier free and right based’ society. Accessibility has been further intensified within heritage buildings to benchmark high quality of tourism industry and importantly promotes social equality. In fact heritage tourism has been another gateway to elaborate fundamental accessibility needs of persons with disabilities in all aspects. Legislative framework has yet encapsulated both approaches comprehensively especially deficiency in provision of statutory requirements. There is lack of supportive guideline to address gaps between National Heritage Act and Persons with Disabilities Act. In this regards, current practice has shown professionals and consultants not well comprehend to weight balance between conservation principle and barrier free environment approach in restoring heritage buildings. However, the importance of accessibility needs is notably shown in the case studies to engage social inclusion in current practice. Access auditing reported the selected heritage sites including St. George Church, Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi and Suffolk House have potential to include the accessibility needs without diminishing its heritage significance. As long access strategy and accessible mapping are identified during the initial stage to connect the core elements depending on its unique original fabric. Certainly never a fixed standard appending to current building regulations is applicable to all heritage sites. The research concluded barrier free environment approach is possible to reconcile with conservation principle within reasonable accommodation from case to cases basis.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87590896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies had found that motivation and work attitude in healthcare are critical to boost nurses work performance. Various methods were strived to improve motivation and work attitude, one of them is by applying nature elements. Other research found that nature restores both human physical and mind. The objective of this research is to improve Emergency Unit nurse motivation and attitude by placing nature form both natural and artificial, during night shift. Motivation and attitude can be measured by mood, further, positive mood improves motivation and work attitude. The experiment was held by giving 6 nature form conditions through digital animation walkthroughs as stimuli and evaluated by mood, motivation, and attitude questionaire using 7 scales of T'Likerts. Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) is used as mood questionnaire, while motivation and attitude questionnaire adapt from nurses’ duties. The research found that mood, motivation, and attitude affect each other. Every nature form in interior stimulates specific mood, motivation, and attitude responses. Besides that, artificial nature form, especially nature form on the floor, is the most preferable to improve nurse motivation and attitude.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89255345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
