Although research related to active aging has gained considerable interest, in Malaysia, older adults’ active aging is still in its infancy. The crucial role of neighborhood characteristics as promoting active aging has led the WHO to adopt more comprehensive approaches by introducing ‘Age-Friendly Cities’ program. This study used a qualitative approach to explore the experience of older adults’ active aging as influenced by neighborhood characteristics. The data explication centered on concept of active aging. Main themes emerged were: physical activity, facilitators to physical activity, and barriers to physical activity, accessibility, social interaction, and safety. The results show that older adults are sensitive with respect to perceived falling hazards due to poor lighting and poor walkway conditions. Regular maintenance is required to avoid restrictions upon their physical activity.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45306989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A similar trend has prevailed in Sarawak where housing has thrived owing to growing market and active supply-demand dynamics. However, the cosmic increase in housing prices since 2012 has raised serious concerns among researchers with regard to how sustainable housing is in this country. Price spiral has led to an acute shortage of housing affordable to the middle-income group. Therefore, alternatives for dealing with housing affordability have to be worked on in steering the future direction of housing in the country. In dealing with such issue, a set of criteria encompassing social, economic and environmental influences would need to be identified and evaluated to determine the best alternative or option available for any particular area. A study was conducted on the city of Kuching and its hinterland. COPRAS was used. The results indicate that an area with a high degree of utility conforms best to sustainable housing affordability while the area with a lower degree of utility performs poorly in this respect. The originality of this research has contributed to new literature in dealing with sustainable housing affordability in Malaysia, particularly in the state of Sarawak.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47955194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies were more focused on design implementation and maintenance issues started to protrude. The overall image that was gathered from the literature on the maintenance aspect of PWDs’ facilities is unsatisfactory, i.e. poor maintenance; operation and management often overlook, and outdated facilities due to inadequate proper maintenance. Maintenance aspect can affect the PWDs’ quality of living environment by creating barriers to the PWDs and often, to the extent that it involves safety issues. This study aims to obtain empirical evidence on the theory of PWDs’ facilities condition in prior studies. Study was conducted at two selected government hospitals in Selangor. The objective is to investigate the condition and maintenance priority of PWDs’ facilities using Building Assessment Rating System (BARS) produced by Public Works Department Malaysia. The condition, maintenance priority, and defects or damages of PWDs’ facilities have been identified from the analysis. It was found only PWDs’ toilets and lifts were having from average to very critical condition and require high maintenance priority. Findings have provided empirical evidence for prior studies on the importance of maintenance management for PWDs’ facilities.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44250816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While it is undeniable that a place is noticeable and regarded as meaningful due to its cultural heritage values, it is important to know where these significances lie or reside in, along with its current importance to the local community. Nevertheless, there is no single definitive list of the elements that is made available to date. Therefore, this research attempts to explore the key features of a place that can contribute to the unique character of a town and substantially drive the subsequent conservation process. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Taiping, a small town in the state of Perak to identify the key elements that define the overall value of a place, particularly shophouses buildings. Tangible and intangible features were identified as the character-defining elements of shophouses that are worthy of being preserved and maintained. The paper concludes to an interesting result where an intangible character-defining element is the most important feature that characterised the shophouses in the town.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44206163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study examines the middle adults’ housing expectation which will affect their housing preferences and decisions upon retirement. A face-to-face survey was conducted on 464 respondents aged 40 and above living in the urban concentrated areas of Greater Kuala Lumpur. Most of the respondents indicated that they have a strong willingness to continue to stay in their current homes and their opinions on the satisfaction level of comfort were evaluated in this survey. Though certain groups have their own preferences for their future housing plan, the findings revealed that most of the middle age adults have strong desire to age in place, surrounded by family members, friends as well as suitable facilities. This suggests that to a certain degree, the current housing will not be their desired retirement home. It is recommended that the housing policy should integrate the expectation and needs of the ageing population of the nation.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42710258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2014, the number declined by 30% due to landslide events. The main question for this paper is what can be implemented into the tourism strategic planning that may benefit local communities and promote sustainable tourism development in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands. The lack of sustainable practice has caused the highlands to degrade and the incentives for agriculture increases in parallel with unequal benefits for locals. There are two key socio economic sustainable tourism concepts which are; community involvement in decision-making and community involvement in tourism benefits sharing being proposed in this paper. Four sets of interview questionnaires were formulated based on 4 components of respondents. Based on the results, this research highlighted that the decision-making process are to be made jointly with the government and local authority in consultation with the community representative. Amongst the recommendations is fair-trade scheme of equity in payment is for locals to benefit off tourism businesses involved in agriculture to protect their working and living environment and gain control over their future. The success of the two concepts requires commitment from all parties.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44211186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, inadequacy in terms of understanding how these grassroots institutions participate within Local Agenda 21 processes persists. Despite the establishment of Local Agenda 21 for sixteen years in Malaysia, research on the development of community leadership and learning in mobilising community remains scarce. This paper thus attempts to assess community leadership and learning through participation in Local Agenda 21 programs. Triangulated data collection methods comprising document analysis, experts’ interviews, and case study approach were undertaken to evaluate the development of local sustainable initiatives implemented by two community-based organisations within the platform of community participation facilitated by the City Council of Petaling Jaya. Building on Purdue’s leadership and trust framework as well as instrumental and communicative learning concepts, this qualitative study finds that continuous participation resulting from a continuous charismatic leadership has caused the local neighbourhoods to keep learning. This finding suggests that neighbourhoods participating actively in sustainability platform may substantially contribute to social dimensions of neighbourhood liveability, depending on the extent of community leadership and learning.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48823122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Purchasing a “dream home” is one of those life accomplishments that top nearly everyone’s bucket list. Searching for a home comes with different considerations; housing market outcomes can be influenced by a range of different factors. In the long run. house prices will tend to converge to the cost of new housing construction. For that reason, this study aims to identify the determinants affecting the purchase decision among middle-income groups. The data was collected through questionnaire survey that was distributed in the Klang Valley area. The data was gathered then analysed using descriptive analysis and inferential statistical tests. Findings identified factors that have driven up the demand for housing, and in particular for home ownership, in recent years. It reveals that the affordable house price factor is the most important consideration in buying a house. This study would shed light for the developers in developing housing schemes based on the consumers1 preferences and could become a basis for the government to revise the current housing scheme policy’s design specifically in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":37954,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Design and Built Environment","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46583359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
