The first part of the paper describes the backdrop for Dewey’s critical engagement with Lotze, namely, his attempt to distinguish his newly developed instrumentalist understanding of logic from the absolute idealism that had played an important role in his earlier thinking. The next part of the paper then describes the instrumental position from which Dewey approached Lotze’s thinking, while the final part of the paper examines Dewey’s critical analysis of Lotze’s thinking about logic. In this respect, the essay aims to achieve two main objectives. The first one is to show how the current crisis can be described not only focusing on its systemic, structural nature, but also taking into account the critical claims of social actors. In this respect, it will be argued that the European crisis can be seen as a form of institutional disorder, i.e. a lack of legitimacy of supra-national European institutions, which is grounded on the distrust of both European citizens and international markets. Focusing primarily on his works devoted to the European integration, the intent of this paper is to analyze the implications of his re-thinking of the “constitution” and the democracy in Europe, starting from the theme of the national constellation crisis. It argues that Habermas’ attempt to rethink political identity at the European level is somewhat of an extension of his analysis in Facts and Norms which reveals tensions in relations to the constitutive political plurality of Europe. Moreover, the paper outlines in which sense Habermas’ recent appeal to the concepts of “divided sovereignty” and “divided/shared constituent power” represents a novelty since it explicitly tries to theorize the EU as a federal, non-statal community. As a matter of fact, despite his allowance for the topic of the origin of concepts, Lotze manages to avoid logical psychologism. At the same time, concepts cannot be said to have validity ( Geltung ) in the same way as propositions in themselves do: were this the case, one could actually ascribe Lotze a form of Platonism. As will be argued, Nietzsche’s criticism towards common sense realism is consistent with some pragmatist epistemologies developed during the late-nineteenth and earlytwentieth century. This treat of “timeliness” does not limit Nietzsche’s originality on the topic. It argues that Leo Strauss uses the Kuzari to show the central importance the question of a fully rational law has for an adequate understanding of the relationship between philosophy and society. The titular distinction between freedom of religion and freedom from religion is intended to emphasize the prerequisites for unfettered exercise of freedom of thought and freedom of conscience; namely, not only the guarantee of freedom to associate with one of the stateapproved religions, but the freedom to choose none of them and the guaranty of freedom from any state, church, majority, or minority coercion through religion. Schiller’s regulative idea regarding religion was the rejection of faith and subject-external belief system (“no religion”). It had a pivotal role in the development of early-modern physics, especially during the Scientific Revolution when it gained a new momentum with a con-spicuous number of Latin commentaries and translations. Besides the Latin theoretical production, various Italian vernacular commentaries, expositions and translations were produced for very practical purposes. Works such those of Oreste Biringucci, Antonio Guarino, Nicolò Tartaglia and Giuseppe Moletti were addressed primarily to engineers, architects and bombardiers.
