These are so, especially among the Black South African women of childbearing age. The South African Demographic Health Survey (SADHS) 2016 data was used to examine the role of three hierarchical layers of variables (individual, household and community level characteristics) in determining marital dissolution among Black South African women of childbearing age in South Africa. Based on the Social-ecological (SEM) and the Easterlin’s micro-economic models, the chi-squared test and multilevel logistic regression were performed at the bivariate and multivariate levels respectively. The multilevel logistic regressions were performed using the generalised linear and latent mixed model (GLLAMM) to obtain fixed and random effects. Findings suggest that an insignificant proportion of the study sample were ever married. The level of those ever married increased with mother’s age, while the highest proportion of those never married reside in KwaZulu-Natal (88,3%) province. With the exception of language, type of place of residence and place of delivery, all tested factors were found to be significant and/or associated with marital dissolution at different hierarchical model levels (p<0.05). Results of random effect revealed a very small, i.e. insignificant (0.01) variations in their log odds of predicting marital dissolution. The study recommends that these findings be considered in all programme and policy developments around the issue in South Africa.","PeriodicalId":378976,"journal":{"name":"SOCIETY AND CULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123860720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various attempts have been made to understand or examine this shift from Mughal sovereignty and governance to that of British forms. By means of this examination, in fact, attempts have been made to understand fundamentally the very idea of ‘state’ in an Indian or more so in an Asian context. This paper will focus upon the shifting of the state in the Bengal borderland or frontiers and its implications on smaller, native (princely) and peripheral states. In other words, beginning with the bigger, major, fundamental concerns of state in India, I will in this paper eventually delve into the concerns of smaller, minor states, standing in the periphery of Indian territory and in the frontiers of Asian nation-states. In the context of African Tribal societies, Aidon Southal invented a new form of state called the ‘segmentary state’. Burton Stein, while working on the pre-colonial state including the Mughal state, elaborates the concept of ‘segmentary state’ by means of the case examples of the Southern states of Chola and Vijayanagara. Taking the clue from Southal, Stein asserts that the Chola and Vijayanagara regime or these states were not states in terms of real power but, it didn’t stop them from being a state nonetheless- although only nominally. In other words, the concept of ‘segmentary state’ focuses upon states within a state. It aims to understand the nature of state from the perspective of the periphery. The analysis and approach to understand the state from the perspective of the periphery differs fundamentally from the analysis or approach which seeks to understand the state from above or from the mainland. In this paper, I will elaborate this, first by an exploration of the state of Bengal, then, moving towards the periphery through an exploration of the Ahom state and finally, I will solely focus on the case of the Koch Bihar/Cooch Behar/Kamatapur state, which this study considers as a peculiar case from the periphery of the periphery.","PeriodicalId":378976,"journal":{"name":"SOCIETY AND CULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132873767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data regarding the current problem is collected through the direct questionnaire method to the respondents of Khaira Hasan Village and later it is arranged in tabular form after necessary calculations and processing. From the results of the study it is clear that educational mobility is recorded in the second generation. From the indepth analysis of the data it is also clear that upward educational mobility among the scheduled caste of Khaira Hasan Village is not restricted to the more educated household of the scheduled caste but the larger share of more educated children was produced by the parents having more than lower primary education (catagories4 and 5), there was significant decline in the share of children with lesser educational attainment than their parents. It is also clear from the results that most of the scheduled caste workers in both the generation are involved in primary sector of economy though their percentage has slightly declined in the second generation. Apart from it the probability of the children of primary worker to become secondary worker is increasing.","PeriodicalId":378976,"journal":{"name":"SOCIETY AND CULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131360425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An individual or groups of individuals in any excluded social group or ethnic group invariably encounter the problem of exclusion in daily life. Moreover it is contextual and situational intertwined with the geographically culturally inbuilt mechanism. The forms of exclusion also differ from one ethnic group to another living in different social environments, geographical and economic conditions. This empirical research work paper presents the levels of social exclusion, mechanism, forms and variations in between the stratified caste society and egalitarian tribal society. The level of social exclusion at each excluded social group definitely correlates and corresponds with the development status of it in the caste based society of India, in specific to Rural India, Rural Andhra Pradesh. The empirical field work based observations in three multi caste villages of Manduru, Morampudi and Vedullapalle as well as in three multi tribal villages of Pasuvulabanda, Kolapari and Lammasingi, located in the newly carved Andhra Pradesh state have been presented in this research article. It is descriptive in nature and comprises Anthropological qualitative explanations with both etic and emic perspectives.","PeriodicalId":378976,"journal":{"name":"SOCIETY AND CULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133958592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rituals’ ingrained value system is viewed primarily in two categories- first, the conditioning of women for motherhood through birth rituals and, second, the extent to which these rituals sustain patriarchy. This socialisation through birth rites contributes to a woman’s social and self-identification as a mother. To analyse these processes, attempts are undertaken to examine birth rites in the social life of Bengali folk culture and in Hindu scripture sources. This study will concentrate solely on Hindu birth rites found in scriptural texts and folk birth rituals performed by Hindus. A field study was also conducted in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of traditional ceremonies.","PeriodicalId":378976,"journal":{"name":"SOCIETY AND CULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133346398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What brings social distancing in human life? Particularly in village oriented spaces like in Asia. The socio-economic agents are desperately having turned to new platforms for an individual. In protection of pandemic casualty, people of low economic societies have gone from homogeneity to heterogeneity. They believe much more in medical awareness rather than social equality. The social distancing or physical distancing, whatever you are saying, the legitimate fact is that to keep yourself from others in the present situation. The people unwittingly renounced from social work at the time of social responsibility. As a result, we have seen that a person is affected by corona, his old wife is trying to hold him on stature, and nobody does agree to come to help her. After a few times, the person is going to die. We saw this incident as a piece of news in the newspaper in next morning. A few of them had read that news on a computer screen or their cell phones. And the opposite side of these devices human is also one. However, the impressive resonance from the reader’s corner leads to the human integrity had seen.The humanity of the community has expressed grief exclusively. And Durga Puja is not just the emotion of the Bengali community; rather it is a larger than life experience for whoever attends it. UNESCO has also accredited Kolkata Durga Puja as the ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Community’. In this paper, I have tried to cover some of the aspects of Durga Puja. First a brief introduction has been given on Durga Puja in Kolkata followed by the basic and detailed identification and description of the Goddess and the process, mentioning the intrinsic repertoires for the celebration. In the further sections I have tried to mention some explanations of certain ceremonial rituals performed on different days of the festival. A brief discussion on the changing pattern of the celebration is also added with a chronology of recorded Durga Puja events. Furthermore there is also a section about the latest attraction of the festival- the Carnival. In my paper, I have also mentioned about the local artisans who are behind every aspect of this festive season. Lastly, I have concluded by mentioning how this festival is no less than a cultural confluence of every community.","PeriodicalId":378976,"journal":{"name":"SOCIETY AND CULTURE DEVELOPMENT IN INDIA","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122589538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
