Pre- and posttests consisting of a scale and open-ended questions were completed by workshop participants (i.e., Latino parents, mean age 33.63 with an average of 2 to 3 children). The participants’ awareness of the rates, risks, and consequences of alcohol use significantly improved following the intervention (pretest M = 7.99 , SD = 2.12; posttest M = 9.45; SD = 1.67; t(70) = −5.328, p < .001) with a medium effect size (Cohen’s d = .77). Four major themes emerged in regards to what parents can do to prevent alcohol use among youths, including open communication, dar el ejemplo (set an example), love, and parental involvement (i.e., support and monitoring). Participants felt the workshops’ strengths were the quality of information, the delivery of presentation, and que son madres (that the facilitators are mothers). Few studies document promotoras in substance use prevention efforts with Latinos, who underutilize specialty services. Thus, the promotoras model demonstrates a promising method for reaching this growing population.","PeriodicalId":378398,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnic And Cultural Diversity in Social Work","volume":"680 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121992475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prompted by the realization that culture is a critical part of clinical encounters with her clients, and the recognition that bringing cultural sensitivity to her family therapy practice necessitated “bridging the gap” between the context of her own cultural experiences and that of her clients, Falicov set out to write the book as a way of bringing “a map of cultural inclusion in psychotherapy” (p. x). The author succeeded in her intention. She created a work that promoted a conceptualization of culture that is multidimensional, and presented the therapist as someone who is “culturally attuned” rather than “culturally encapsulated (i.e., unable to see others through a varied cultural lens).” Furthermore, Falicov posits that the therapist, as part of the “cultural equation,” is also to be considered as a component of the client’s ecology in the therapeutic encounter. As a way of demonstrating how culture and sociocultural factors intersect and connect in family therapy, Falicov created not a new model of psychotherapy, but a “cultural generalist” (p. 8) framework to be used in understanding Latino families from a holistic perspective. This perspective includes consideration of critical aspects of families’ cultural identities, the family’s ecological context, the impact of their experiences within those contexts (e.g., oppression, marginalization), and a “position that doesn’t focus on all the details of each culture or subculture being discussed” (p. 10). The multidimensional (M) ecosystemic (E) comparative approach (CA), or MECA, the name Falicov has given to the framework she has created, is delineated in Part I of the book. Falicov describes and defines MECA’s principal ideas and rationale, outlines the four domains, and discusses the model’s possible applications. In addition, and an invaluable aspect of the book, Falicov provides an example that demonstrates the model’s application in assessing and treating a family, including the therapist’s cultural and theoretical stance in working with the family. Part II of the book provides background social/historical information (albeit briefly) on Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans, and then describes","PeriodicalId":378398,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnic And Cultural Diversity in Social Work","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128745314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One to two years after the attacks, 145 participants from 6 affected agencies in New York City participated in 22 focus groups to discuss post-disaster psychosocial issues. Ethnic prejudice was reflected in 2% of the comments emerging from these discussions, representing three major subthemes: (1) observations of prejudice toward self or others, (2) personal fear-based or prejudicial attitudes and opinions, and (3) defense of Muslims. The discussion involving prejudice that emerged in these focus groups parallels the upsurge in prejudice reported by other sources after 9/11.","PeriodicalId":378398,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnic And Cultural Diversity in Social Work","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132611928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interventions developed by social workers need to be culturally responsive. The process of indigenization is necessary for an intervention to be effective in addressing the needs of a cultural group. This article highlights the growing literature on indigenizing interventions. It examines Critical Indigenous Pedagogy of Place (CIPP) as an approach and method that can facilitate the process of indigenization and the impact it may have on multiple ecosystemic levels. Data are drawn from a case study of a community-based, youth-led farm. A content analysis of the interviews was conducted using critical indigenous qualitative research to build a working conceptual model of CIPP. Findings indicate that CIPP has influence on the individual, family, and community levels as it promotes the use of indigenous epistemology and values. Implications on social work practice and education are discussed.","PeriodicalId":378398,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ethnic And Cultural Diversity in Social Work","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130961340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
