In softwood species, the green moisture content of heartwood ranged from 28% in Cryptomeria japonica to 67% in Abies firma, and in sapwood, from 75% in Tsuga sieboldii to 160% in Cryptomeria japonica. The green moisture content of softwood trees was greater in sapwood than heartwood. The green moisture content in the heartwood of hardwood species ranged from 34% in Euonymus alatus f. striatus to 83% in Kalopanax pictus, and in sapwood, from 45% in Fraxinus sieboldiana to 153% in Actinidia polygama. We found three radial variation pattern types in stems of hardwood species. The green moisture content was higher in heartwood than sapwood, in the first type, whereas in the second, it was higher in sapwood than heartwood. In a third type, differences between heartwood and sapwood were relatively small. The basic density of softwood species ranged from 378 kg/m3 in Cryptomeria japonica to 524 kg/m3 in Tsuga sieboldii. Most trees tended to decrease in basic density from corewood to outerwood. Basic density in hardwood species ranged from 266 kg/m3 in Paulownia tomentosa to 751 kg/m3 in Rhaphiolepis indica var. umbellata. We identified three types of radial variation pattern in stems of hardwood species. In the first type, basic density was higher in corewood than outerwood, whereas in second, it was higher in outerwood. In the third type, differences between corewood and outerwood were small. We also provided the information on the age and size of heartwood formation. The regional provenances of Am and Aa were from Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Queensland-Australia (QLD), respectively. Wood cores were extracted at the breast height of each candidate plus trees, and used for measuring the wood propenies. First, a quick and effective method for evaluation of fiber length in an individual tree was investigated. The means at two different positions (Ft) were statistically related to the area weighted fiber length. Ft could be used as the value for the individual tree. Second, provenance variation in wood properties was evaluated by analysis of variance. Among Am provenances, both fiber length and lignin content dilfered signhicantly between PNG and QLD at the 10/o level. Fiber length of PNG (1.09mm) was longer than that of QLD (1.06 mm), and lignin contents of PNG (29.90/o) was lower than that of QLD (30.60/o). All provenances were classhied into three groups (good, medium, and poor petformance) according to the mean values for fiber length, air-dried density, and lignin content. Aa provenances could not be classhied into the good group. These results suggested some Am provenances might provide superior trees with-good performance.","PeriodicalId":378300,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Kyushu University Forests","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132228353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inspecting earlier observational studies that reported vertical AT distribution within forest canopies, we showed that the common vertical AT difference within forest canopies was lower than 3.0 °C. We showed, using a leaf-scale transpiration-photosynthesis model, that a 3. 0 °C AT difference caused smaller differences in leaf-scale photosynthesis and transpiration rates than a common vertical difference in photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) intensity within forest canopies when AT was higher than ca. 15 °C. While, the AT difference caused larger differences in leaf-scale photosynthetic and transpiration rates than the PAR difference when AT was lower than ca. 10 °C . However, the ranges in the rates with changing AT by 3.0 °C were comparable with predictability of a leaf-scale transpiration-photosynthesis model. Thus, we conclude that accurately simulating AT distribution is not essential at this stage for calculating vertical photosynthesis and transpiration distribution using multilayer canopy models.","PeriodicalId":378300,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Kyushu University Forests","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123620429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fungal partial 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA: approximately 450/1800 bp) were amplified from the DNA extracts of fern roots using fungal specific primer, and subcloned to cloning vector (pGEM-T). According to the RFLP pattern of subclone, some clones were selected and their inserts were sequenced. One of them (GLA-006) was predominant in this analysis, however, four (or potentially five) different clone were found in the root of B. ternatum. To infer the phylogenetic relationship, sequences were donated on BLAST Search. According to the result of BLAST Search, neighbor joining analysis was performed. The partial sequencing data of 18S rDNA indicate that these isolates closely related to genus Glomus (AM fungi), especially G. proliferum and G. sinuosum. Three of them were 92-95 % identical to G. proliferum.","PeriodicalId":378300,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Kyushu University Forests","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129397611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The total world production of the cultivated edible mushroom has been increased dramatically since the end of the World War II. Some scientist has predicted that worldwide mushroom production will continue to increase at an average annual rate of 8% to the early of 21 century. Much interest has been aroused recently in the possibility of growing microorganism on a large scale to provide a cheap source of protein, food and folk medicine for antitumors and adult diseases. Large-scale culture for mushroom mycelium in submerged liq uid culture has been realized . Despite the small contribution in terms of food and protein resources, mushrooms will remain a valuable food for many people. Not only does the mush room have a unique flavor, its protein value lies somewhere between that of meat and vegeta bles. In addition mushrooms rank highly for their vitamin content and make an important con tribution to the supply of some minerals in the diet. Lately it could not be negligible to have research the effect of the mushroom and its culture filtrates on cancer, antitumor and the other adult diseases and the possibility as very important folk medicines. In order to produce high value-added mushrooms, its fungal mycelia, and its use of food processing, certain technical difficulties in their productions could be overcome.","PeriodicalId":378300,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Kyushu University Forests","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123292476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, the inhibitory components of Artocarpus incisus heartwood which showed the strongest inhibitory activity in 23 PNG wood species, their structureactivity relationships and inhibitory mechanism were evaluated. Tyrosinase inhibitory activityguided fractionation led to the isolation of seven active compounds including two new compounds, 3,2' , 4'trihydroxy 6\" , 6\"dimethylpyrano(3\" , 2\" :4,5 ) trans stilbene (artocarbene) and 6 (3\"methyl-1 \" butenyl) -5,7,2' , 4'-tetrahydroxyflavone ( isoartocarpesin) . The structure-activity relation ships suggested that specific natural or synthesized compounds having 4substituted resorcinol skeleton had potent tyrosinase inhibitory ability. Kinetic studies have indicated that specific compounds having 4substituted resorcinol skeleton exhibit competitive inhibition of the oxida tion of DL-DOPA by mushroom tyrosinase. Second, 5 a reductase inhibitory components from PNG and Thai plants were investigated respectively , and their structureactivity relationships were discussed . The methanol extract of heartwood of A. incisus showed potent 5 a reductase inhibitory activity. Chlorophorin and artocarpin showed more potent inhibitory effects (ICso 37 u M and 85 u M , respectively) than did a linolenic acid , which is known as a naturally occurring potent inhibitor. The inhibitory effects of 17 samples prepared from Thai plants on 5 a reductase activity were examined. The acetone extract of A. incisus leaves showed potent 5 a reductase inhibitory activity. Fractionation guided by 5 a reductase inhibitory test led to the isolation of 2-geranyl-2', 3,4, 4'tetrahydroxydihydrochalcone (IC 38 it M) and a novel geranylated chalcone, 3'-ger anyl-2' , 3 , 4 , 4'tetrahydroxychalcone (IC 104 u M) from the acetone extract of A. incisus leaves. Structureactivity relationship suggested that the presence of an isoprenederived sub stituent (prenyl and geranyl) would enhance 5 a reductase inhibitory effects.","PeriodicalId":378300,"journal":{"name":"Bulletin of the Kyushu University Forests","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121932478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
