We explore students’ academic development as well as their self-positioning as heritage speakers in a bilingual academic setting. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), we analyze the written production of seven bilingual students enrolled in a Native Speaker Program at a large, public university. We focus on the development of their academic language through the support of a heritage language tutor and explore the role of the peer tutor as a facilitator in this process. Additionally, we employ Appraisal Theory to analyze interviews in which the same participants explore their bilingual identities and how they position themselves interpersonally as a result of conversations held with a peer mentor, thus demonstrating the benefits of learning Spanish as a heritage language through peer-led learning in ...","PeriodicalId":37753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Spanish Language Teaching","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23247797.2018.1538358","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47925015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, courses in language for academic purposes (LAP) have multiplied in recent times to prepare students linguistically to study academic content in an L2. However, in Spanish-speaking universities there are pragmatic and cultural conventions that foreign students need to recognize in order to function appropriately and successfully during their period of study. This article presents the results of an international survey completed by university teachers of L2 Spanish in nine countries in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. The aim of the questionnaire was to investigate the current state of formal instruction of cultural and pragmatic aspects of L2 Spanish for academic purposes in higher education when transitioning to...","PeriodicalId":37753,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Spanish Language Teaching","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23247797.2018.1538307","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47128404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
